Focus on the places people use most: clear shelter near the house and play areas, reduce food sources that attract rodents, and close openings into buildings. You do not need to strip the whole property of vegetation. Keep natural cover away from high-use zones, and treat fencing as a targeted option rather than a guarantee.
Start with the areas where people spend time
Make the house perimeter, paths, and children’s play areas your first priorities. Snakes are more likely to use places that offer both shelter and prey, so reducing those features in busy areas can help limit encounters. - Keep grass short and selectively thin dense or overgrown vegetation near the house and play spaces.
- Remove or move brush piles, scrap, refuse, and stored materials away from those areas.
- Move ground-level firewood piles away from buildings and play areas. If you need wood nearby, stack it neatly on a rack rather than directly on the ground.
Do not clear every brushy or vegetated area. Reduce food sources that can attract prey
Snakes may visit an area where prey is available, and rodents can take advantage of accessible food. Make outdoor food less available to them:

- Pick up pet food after feeding instead of leaving it outside.
- Store animal feed and birdseed in closed, rodent-resistant containers.
- Clean up spilled birdseed and address signs of rodent activity.

Close openings into buildings
Habitat changes around the yard do not prevent a snake from entering through an opening. Inspect the building exterior for gaps at doors, windows, foundations, vents, drains, and utility penetrations. Maintain door sweeps and window screens, and use a suitable screen or sealant for each opening. UF/IFAS describes hardware cloth as one option for covering larger gaps; the material and repair should fit the opening rather than leave a new gap around it.

Use exclusion fencing only for a defined area
A complete, correctly installed fine-mesh barrier may help protect a small area, such as a play space. The details depend on the site and the design; extension publications give different dimensions and installation approaches, not one universal specification.

Be skeptical of repellents and put safety first
Do not rely on products marketed as snake repellents as your main prevention measure. UF/IFAS says advertised “snake repellents” do not work. If you nevertheless use a pesticide labeled for snakes, follow its label and the safety precautions described by the National Pesticide Information Center; label directions are not evidence that a product is effective.
If you see an unidentified snake, do not try to handle or kill it. Keep children and pets away, give the animal room to leave, and contact your local wildlife authority, animal-control service, or extension office for help.
