To make your Xbox picture fit your TV, set the console to the display modes your television supports, then use the TV’s picture-size or screen-fit setting to correct cropping or borders. Resolution changes the video signal; it does not necessarily change how the TV maps that signal onto its screen.
Connect the Xbox and select its input
- Connect the console’s HDMI OUT port to an HDMI IN port on the TV.
- Turn on both devices, then use the TV’s Source or Input menu to select the HDMI port connected to the Xbox.
Samsung recommends checking the exact TV model and HDMI input when aiming for 4K at 120 Hz; support varies by model. A cable or Xbox setting cannot add capabilities the TV input does not support. Set the Xbox video output to a supported mode
- On Xbox, open Settings, then the display or video output options. Menu labels can differ by console software version.
- Open Video fidelity & overscan and use Auto-detect as the starting point, if available.
- Under Video modes, enable Allow 4K and Allow HDR only when the TV and connected HDMI input support those modes.
These are the setup choices Samsung documents for supported configurations; they are not guarantees that every TV, HDMI port, or Xbox model can output every mode. For Samsung TVs, the manufacturer’s instructions are at Samsung Support.
Fix a picture that is cropped or surrounded by borders
If the edges of the Xbox interface are cut off, or the picture appears smaller than the TV screen, look in the TV’s picture settings for a control named something like Picture Size, Screen Fit, or an overscan option. The label and menu path depend on the TV model. Consult its manual and choose the setting that shows the complete image without unwanted borders.

This is a TV display-mapping issue, not necessarily a resolution problem. The available sources do not establish a universal Xbox scaling percentage or a single menu path that works across TV brands. Xbox’s support page is titled Change your TV display resolution; use the TV manual for its model-specific fit or overscan controls.
Enable enhanced HDMI features on applicable Samsung TVs
Some Samsung models require Input Signal Plus to be enabled for the HDMI port connected to the console before higher-bandwidth signal options are available. On some older sets, the setting is called HDMI UHD Color. Find the option in the TV’s External Device Manager or the model-specific equivalent, and enable it for the Xbox’s port if the TV supports it. Exact names and paths vary; refer to Samsung’s setup instructions or the manual for your set.

Use Game Mode if you want gaming-focused picture behavior
Samsung describes Game Mode as a setting that optimizes the screen for gaming. Its availability and menu path depend on the TV model and geographical area, so check the set’s manual. Game Mode is separate from screen-fit adjustments: it does not replace correcting cropping or selecting a supported resolution. See the Samsung E-Manual guidance.

Check compatibility before targeting 4K, HDR, or 120 Hz
When evaluating a setup, verify the console’s capabilities alongside the exact TV model and HDMI input. Check the maximum resolution, supported refresh rate on that port, HDR support, whether an enhanced-signal setting is required, and whether the TV offers a picture-size adjustment. Samsung explicitly cautions that 4K/120 Hz support varies by model.

Replacing an HDMI cable may make sense if the existing cable or connection is faulty or unsuitable for the signal you want, but a new cable does not fix TV overscan or upgrade an HDMI input’s capabilities. Confirm compatibility across the console, cable, and TV before buying.
