Choose a mode that shows the full image without stretching it. Menu names and available modes vary by TV model, software version, input, and app.
Change picture size in your TV’s settings
Use the TV’s regular settings menu rather than a hidden service menu. These manufacturer examples show where to start; your model may use different labels. If a menu path does not match, check the manual for your exact TV model and search for “picture size,” “screen,” “aspect ratio,” “wide mode,” or “fit to screen.”

LG TVs
- webOS 23/24: Press Settings, then open Picture → Aspect Ratio. [LG Support]

Press Quick Settings, then go to Settings → Display & Sound → Screen → Wide mode. Auto may switch modes when the channel or input changes. Choose another mode if you do not want the TV to select a new one as the signal changes. [Sony Help Guide]

Samsung TVs
Open Settings → All Settings → Picture → Picture Size Settings. The options depend on the input signal. Fit to Screen may be unavailable depending on the TV model, region, app, or current Picture Size selection. For some fit problems, Samsung’s guide also recommends checking the external device’s output resolution. [Samsung Support]
Choose a mode that matches the problem
People or circles look stretched
Choose a normal aspect ratio that preserves the source’s proportions instead of forcing the image to fill every part of the screen. On LG, try 16:9 and then Original Ratio if needed. Stretching 4:3 material across a widescreen display changes its proportions.

Edges are cut off or the image looks enlarged
Turn off Zoom, Cinema Zoom, or another enlargement mode. If your TV offers a fit-to-screen or no-overscan option, try it. Sony distinguishes Full, which can use overscan, from Full pixel, which does not; availability and behavior depend on the model. Zooming can remove part of the picture. [Sony Help Guide] [LG Support]

There are black bars on the left and right
Side bars can be correct when 4:3 content is shown on a widescreen TV. Stretching removes the bars by changing the image’s proportions; zooming may remove them by cropping part of the picture. [Sony Help Guide]

There are black bars at the top and bottom
Some movies are wider than a 16:9 screen, so bars can appear when the full image is shown in its original proportions. Removing them generally means cropping part of the image or distorting it. [Sony Help Guide]

Troubleshoot in a reliable order
- Identify the source. Note whether you are watching a broadcast channel, a built-in app, an HDMI device, a game console, or a computer. The source can affect which picture-size options are available.
- Open the TV’s picture or screen settings. Do not assume that changing a streaming box’s resolution also changes the TV’s aspect-ratio setting.
- Check for enlargement. If edges are missing, turn off Zoom or a similar mode and try a normal or fit-to-screen setting if available.
- Compare another source. If the problem appears only in one app or on one device, its settings or signal may be involved. If it occurs on every source, check the TV’s settings and model-specific manual. This comparison can help narrow the cause but does not guarantee a diagnosis.
- Keep proportions intact when possible. Use zoom only if you accept that some of the image may be cropped; avoid stretching 4:3 content unless you prefer the filled-screen look.
