There is no single registration process for every AI agent—and none of these steps guarantees a recommendation or sale. Treat product discovery and checkout as separate capabilities.
How AI shopping agents can find your products
Products can reach AI shopping experiences through platform catalogs, connected sales channels, product feeds, or open-web crawling. The available path depends on your commerce platform and the channel you want to reach; it is not one universal submission process. OpenAI documents product-feed onboarding for ChatGPT, while Shopify describes discovery through Shopify Catalog, activated channels, and open-web crawling.

Shopify’s agentic storefront documentation names ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta surfaces, but channel access and purchase behavior vary. Check current eligibility and activation requirements for your store rather than assuming that availability on one platform means availability everywhere. Start with your highest-priority products and variants. Check that each record has an accurate title and factual description, a clear image, a working product URL, current price and currency, stock status, brand, and unambiguous options. The fields and formatting required depend on the destination: OpenAI’s product specification defines requirements for its documented feed formats, and a generic spreadsheet or arbitrary JSON export should not be assumed to meet them.

Keep price and availability synchronized as they change. OpenAI recommends a regular full feed and API updates where appropriate; its product specification also warns that sale-window or expiration dates do not replace updating current price and availability data. Follow the refresh and validation rules for the integration you actually use. OpenAI’s feed guide covers onboarding and feed maintenance.
Choose a channel or feed that fits your store
OpenAI product feeds
OpenAI documents file-upload and API options, but direct product-feed onboarding is currently available to approved partners. Its guide says: “Onboarding product feeds in ChatGPT is currently available to approved partners.” Access conditions can change, so verify the current requirements and do not treat an application as guaranteed acceptance. The standard upload specification currently targets the US; confirm separately whether any other market configuration is available for your integration. Shopify Catalog and agentic storefront channels
For eligible Shopify stores, Shopify Catalog structures product titles, descriptions, options, images, prices, availability, and other attributes for AI channels, with pricing and inventory updated continuously. Check how your product fields map into the catalog, especially if you rely on custom fields or grouping logic. Shopify says its agentic storefronts let customers discover and purchase products in AI channels including ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta; the specific routes and features available depend on channel and eligibility. Check crawler access without confusing it with catalog distribution
Review your robots.txt file and any bot-management or proxy settings for unintended blocks on public store pages. Shopify notes that robots.txt rules are advisory, so not every crawler must follow them. Avoid blanket allow-or-deny changes without considering your privacy, licensing, and channel preferences.

Crawler access and catalog distribution are distinct routes. Shopify says blocking web crawlers does not stop product data from being sent through activated Shopify Catalog channels. Its stores also serve /agents.md, /llms.txt, and /llms-full.txt by default with store context such as the store name, URL, sitemap, policies, and discovery endpoints. Shopify describes these files as supplementary; they do not replace Catalog. If your store is not on Shopify, check your platform’s supported discovery mechanisms rather than assuming those paths exist or that every agent consumes them. Shopify’s documentation on catalog and discovery explains the distinction.
Verify what “showing up” actually enables
A product appearing in an AI shopping experience does not mean customers can complete an order there. Shopify currently describes ChatGPT as discovery-focused: shoppers may continue to the merchant’s site in an in-app browser or a new tab. Some other Shopify-supported channels can offer direct checkout when activated. Check the specific channel’s current behavior in Shopify’s storefront documentation.

In OpenAI’s commerce protocol, checkout is a separate implementation involving merchant systems. The merchant remains responsible for order validation and processing, fulfillment, taxes, payment risk, and payment processing. - Access: Does the platform require approval, and is your store or product eligible?
- Data mapping: Which product fields can the route carry, and are your variants, options, and custom fields represented correctly?
- Updates: How are price and inventory refreshed, and how will you keep changes current?
- Markets: Which geographies and currencies are supported for your specific integration?
- Customer journey: Does the channel offer discovery, a referral to your site, or checkout within the AI experience?
- Operations: What work is required to reconcile inventory, orders, taxes, fulfillment, and payments?
There is no universally best route established for every merchant. Platform eligibility, supported markets, specifications, and checkout rollouts are subject to change, so confirm current vendor documentation before configuring a channel.
What these steps can—and cannot—do
Good product data, a supported distribution route, and accessible public pages make your store’s information more usable to participating systems. They do not establish a guaranteed ranking, recommendation, traffic increase, or sale. Official platform documentation describes integration behavior and setup, not a promised visibility outcome.
