You can extend a Steam Deck play session by lowering screen brightness, setting a frame-rate cap that suits the game, and adjusting refresh rate or performance controls when needed. Each can trade some brightness, smoothness, or graphics performance for lower power use; there is no single setting that works best for every game.
How much battery life should you expect?
Valve lists a 40 Wh battery and an estimated 2–8 hours of gameplay for Steam Deck LCD, and a 50 Wh battery with an estimated 3–12 hours for Steam Deck OLED. These are broad ranges, not guarantees for a particular game or setup. Valve’s LCD specifications and OLED specifications provide the model figures.

Valve says lighter activities such as streaming, smaller 2D games, and web browsing can approach 7–8 hours. Its published LCD estimate assumes 30 FPS, 50% brightness, and 50% volume; uncapped frame rates, brighter screens, or louder volume can drain the battery faster. See Valve’s hardware information and its Steam Deck tech-spec PDF.

That is Valve’s comparison, not a guarantee that every game will run 30–50% longer. Valve’s OLED announcement explains the claim.

Which settings should you change first?
- Lower brightness. Open Quick Access with the … button and reduce screen brightness to a comfortable level. A dimmer display uses less power, but may be harder to see in a bright room.
- Set a frame-rate limit. In Quick Access, open the performance controls and try a limit the game can maintain comfortably. Capping frame rate avoids spending power rendering frames you do not need, but a lower cap makes motion less smooth.
- Try a lower refresh rate when appropriate. The refresh-rate control is in the performance settings. Choose a rate that fits the frame-rate target you selected; lowering it may help battery life, but can make the display feel less responsive. Valve notes that refresh rates above a model’s cap do not improve performance and may use more charge. See the Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide.
- Adjust the performance limit only if needed. Steam Deck performance controls also include TDP limits. Reducing power available to the processor can save energy, but may lower performance or cause a game to run less smoothly. There is no universal TDP setting that suits every title. Valve describes these controls in its performance-controls announcement.
- Check volume and game settings. Lowering volume can help, and less demanding graphics settings may allow a game to run with less power. The effect depends on the title and the settings available in it.
Change one setting at a time, then play long enough to see whether the difference is useful and the game still feels comfortable. This makes it easier to keep the adjustments that help without sacrificing more brightness or smoothness than you want.

Playing away from an outlet
A USB-C PD power bank is an option for continuing to play while travelling, but it does not increase the Deck’s internal battery capacity. Valve says the Deck uses USB Power Delivery and ships with a 45 W PD 3.0 USB-C power supply; it does not support Fast Charging or Quick Charge specifications. Before buying a USB-C PD power bank, check that its USB-C output supports Power Delivery and confirm its usable capacity. The extra play time depends on the bank, the game, and the Deck’s power draw, so it cannot be stated as a general number. Valve’s support guide covers charging compatibility.

You do not need to keep the Deck plugged in constantly to protect its battery. Valve says a device left charging for a long time may report less than 100% because it is allowed to discharge slowly to optimize long-term battery health. Valve’s support guide explains this behavior.
