Find what is draining your battery
Start with the battery activity screen rather than switching off features at random. Open Settings and look for Battery or Battery usage to see which apps have used the most power. On some Galaxy phones, battery tools are grouped under Device care or Battery and device care. Review recent changes, too: an app you recently installed or started using more often may explain a sudden change.

Samsung Canada’s current instructions give this path: Settings → Battery → Power saving, then turn on the switch. On some models, find the control through Battery and device care or Device care. Use the label on your own phone as the guide; Samsung says features and screens can vary by device and region. Samsung’s Canada instructions for Power saving describe it as reducing background activity and limiting selected features.

Those limits can affect how the phone behaves. Depending on the model and chosen options, Power saving may restrict background Wi-Fi or mobile data, limit location services, or turn off Always On Display. Background updates or location-dependent features may therefore be delayed or less available. Check the options shown when you enable the mode; some controls can be customized. Samsung’s US battery optimization guidance notes that Always On Display may be disabled.
Cut background activity without missing important alerts
Put only infrequently used apps to sleep
Use your phone’s battery or Device care settings to review apps that run in the background, then put rarely used ones to sleep if the option is available. Be selective: restricting a messaging app, navigation app, or another service you rely on could delay alerts or affect its background functions. Sleeping apps can help with avoidable activity, but they are not a guaranteed fix for every drain pattern.
Consider Light performance mode if available
Some Galaxy models offer Light performance mode, which favors battery efficiency and cooling over processing speed. It is an optional trade-off for supported devices, not a setting available across the entire Galaxy range. Look for it in your device’s performance or battery settings if you want to try it.
Choose Battery protection for long-term care, not a fuller day
Battery protection manages charging; it is not a way to increase the charge available for that day. A lower maximum charge can mean starting the day with less battery, so it may suit someone who does not need a full charge and keeps a phone plugged in for long periods.
The options are not uniform across Galaxy phones. Samsung’s UK guidance for One UI 7.0 describes a Maximum mode that can stop charging at a selected 80%, 85%, 90%, or 95%. Its Basic mode charges to 100% and resumes charging when the level falls near 95%. A sleep-time protection option can pause charging near 80% and finish before wake time, depending on settings, learned sleep patterns, and device conditions. See Samsung UK’s Battery protection guidance.
Samsung’s India guidance for One UI 6.1 describes Basic, Adaptive, and Maximum modes; Maximum stops charging at 80%. That differs from the UK page’s One UI 7.0 options. Check Settings → Battery on your phone for the controls it actually offers, or consult Samsung support for your model and market. The documented menus do not establish a universal battery-life improvement percentage. See Samsung India’s One UI 6.1 instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the phone away from prolonged heat and cold
Samsung US gives 32–95°F (0–35°C) as the optimal Galaxy usage temperature. It warns that extended use or storage above 95°F or below 32°F can worsen battery performance, shorten runtime, or cause unexpected shutdowns. Avoid leaving the phone in a hot car or exposing it to prolonged cold. After exposure to temperature extremes, let it return to a suitable temperature before using it. These figures come from Samsung’s US battery-care guidance; the page does not state a publication date.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKnow when to check battery health or seek service
Battery cells wear with use. Samsung lists quick drain after charging and unexpected shutdowns among signs that the battery may need attention. Run Phone diagnostics in the Samsung Members app to check its condition. If the diagnostic reports a problem, or the symptoms continue, contact Samsung support or a service center for an evaluation. Whether a replacement is covered by warranty or requires paid service depends on the applicable warranty terms. The correct repair path also depends on your Galaxy model and market; do not assume the battery is user-replaceable. See Samsung’s battery-health and service guidance.
What to expect from these changes
Samsung’s support material does not quantify how many extra hours Power saving, sleeping apps, or display changes will provide. Capacity and runtime vary with settings and use, so treat these controls as ways to manage avoidable drain rather than promises of a specific improvement. If you need power while away from an outlet, a compatible USB-C power bank can provide an additional charge; check compatibility with your exact Galaxy model.
