How to Make Your Phone Battery Last Longer on 5G

Start with adaptive 5G, then identify what is actually draining the battery. Learn which iPhone and Android settings can help—and what you give up when using them.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with your phone’s adaptive 5G option—such as 5G Auto on iPhone—or switch to LTE when 5G speed is not useful where you are. If the drain continues, check the battery-usage screen and target the apps or display settings using the most power. Battery Saver can stretch a charge, but may limit background activity or change network behavior. The exact controls and results depend on your phone, software, carrier, and location.

Choose a 5G setting that fits how you use the phone

There is no universal 5G-versus-LTE battery saving figure. Cellular power use depends on the phone and network conditions, and official device guidance describes directional behavior rather than a guaranteed number of extra hours. Try adaptive 5G first; if battery use remains high and 5G is not important in your usual locations, compare it with LTE-only use.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters because “5G” is not a single battery setting with the same effect everywhere. Your carrier’s coverage and network configuration, the signal where you use the phone, and the phone’s own modem and software all influence what happens. A setting that helps in one area may make little difference elsewhere. Treat adaptive 5G as a sensible first adjustment, not a promise of a specific runtime improvement.

  • 5G Auto uses Smart Data mode and automatically switches to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience. Apple says this is designed to save battery life.
  • 5G On always uses 5G when available. Apple warns that it might reduce battery life.
  • LTE uses only LTE, giving up 5G availability.

Try 5G Auto as the everyday setting. If the phone still drains quickly, test LTE in the places where you normally use it and decide whether any battery improvement is worth the loss of 5G. Carrier, plan, region, and device support affect which options appear. See Apple’s 5G settings guidance.

These choices reflect a practical trade-off: 5G On prioritizes using 5G whenever it is available, while 5G Auto lets the phone fall back to LTE when the faster connection is not noticeably improving the experience. LTE is the most direct way to stop the phone from using 5G, but it is only useful if LTE coverage and performance work for you. If you depend on 5G for a particular task or location, you can change the setting temporarily and switch back afterward.

Pixel: use Adaptive connectivity where available

On Pixel 4a (5G) and later, including Pixel Fold, look for Adaptive connectivity in network or connectivity settings. It is intended to manage connectivity automatically, but some US carriers may limit availability. Menu wording can differ across Android versions. Google also notes that Battery Saver may lead a 5G-capable Pixel to use 4G, depending on carrier network behavior. Check Google’s Pixel battery guidance and Pixel Battery Saver guidance for device-specific details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that every Pixel or every carrier exposes the same option. If you do not see Adaptive connectivity, confirm support for your specific model and software rather than searching for a universal Android menu path. Battery Saver is a separate choice: it can be useful when you need immediate runtime, but it may affect more than the cellular generation used.

Other Android phones: check the maker’s network controls

Android does not have one 5G menu path that applies to every brand and model. Look in the Settings app for Network & internet, Connections, Mobile networks, or a similar label, then consult the phone maker’s instructions before changing a setting. For example, Motorola’s North American 2025 Edge user guide describes a Turn off 5G option for supported models and software; that control should not be assumed to exist on other phones. Motorola also says 5G uses more battery than 4G.

Network design can contribute too. Samsung explains that some non-standalone 5G deployments use LTE and 5G circuits together, which may increase power use and warmth. This is one possible explanation—not a diagnosis for every 5G phone or network. See Samsung’s explanation of 5G-related drain and Motorola’s Edge 2025 guide.

Samsung’s explanation is especially useful if you are wondering why a phone might get warmer or lose charge more quickly on 5G, but it does not mean every 5G phone is simultaneously using LTE and 5G in the same way. Deployment varies. If the handset is warm, inspect other likely contributors too, such as a demanding app, hotspot use, or prolonged navigation, rather than assuming the network alone is responsible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find what is using power before changing more settings

A 5G connection may not be the main cause of a short charge. Open Settings > Battery or your phone maker’s equivalent and review recent battery use by app. On Pixel, Google recommends checking app battery use and keeping app optimization enabled. On Galaxy phones, Settings > Battery and device care includes Background usage limits, where you can put rarely used apps to sleep or restrict selected apps. Names and placement vary by model and software.

Restrict an app only if you can tolerate slower background updates, syncing, or alerts. If one app dominates the report, check its own background, location, or refresh settings before limiting connectivity across the whole phone. Google’s Pixel battery guidance and Samsung’s Galaxy battery troubleshooting page describe these checks.

Use the battery report as a diagnostic, not just a list of features to turn off. If the display or one app is at the top, changing 5G may not address the biggest source of consumption. If background use is high for an app you rarely open, consider restricting that app specifically. If the report points to regular use you actually need—such as navigation during a commute—look for a targeted way to reduce that activity rather than disabling every connection or notification.

It can also help to make one adjustment at a time and use the phone normally before deciding whether it helped. A day spent in a different coverage area or doing much less streaming is not a fair comparison with a typical day. There is no official controlled, cross-phone measurement in the reviewed guidance that says switching from 5G to LTE will save a particular percentage or a fixed number of hours.

Reduce screen and background activity selectively

Make the display work less

  • Lower screen brightness or use adaptive brightness if it suits your habits.
  • Shorten the screen timeout so the display turns off sooner when idle.
  • Turn off an always-on display, live wallpaper, or high refresh-rate feature if you do not need it. Google specifically recommends turning off Smooth Display on supported Pixel phones.
  • Dark theme may help on some OLED or AMOLED screens, but the effect depends on the display; do not expect the same saving on every phone.

Samsung’s battery guidance also recommends adjusting display and timeout settings. These are targeted changes: keep the visual features that matter to you rather than disabling everything by default. See Samsung’s battery optimization guidance.

  • Speedy 30W Charging: Experience cutting-edge 30W fast charging technology—twice as fast as 5V/3A chargers. Boost an iPhone 16 Pro Max to 50% in just 27 minutes, compared to an hour with traditional power banks.
  • Ready for Endless Use: Crafted for durability, the 5.4-inch built-in USB-C cable is tested to endure over 10,000 bends, ensuring it stands up to the rigors of everyday use.
  • Mighty Compact Power: This powerful 10,000mAh power bank is only 4.32 × 2.58 × 0.98". It delivers up to 2 full charges for an iPhone 15, 1.94 charges for a Samsung S24, 2 charges for an iPhone 14 Pro, and 10 charges for AirPods Pro 2, making it perfect for travel. (Note: For iPhone 14 series and earlier, please use your own Lightning cable and connect it via the USB-A or USB-C port.)
  • 30W Bi-Directional Charging: Enjoy two-way fast charging, a feature found in many Anker power banks, with up to 30W output and 20W input. (Note: Compatible with iPhone 15 Series, MacBook, Galaxy, iPad, Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, and more.)
  • What You Get: Anker Zolo Power Bank (10K, 30W), 5.4-inch (13.7 cm) built-in USB-C cable, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Start with the display settings you can live with. A shorter timeout can prevent the screen from staying lit after you put the phone down, while reducing brightness may matter if you routinely keep it high. Features such as Smooth Display, always-on display, and live wallpaper are optional candidates, not requirements to switch off on every device. Menu names and supported features differ by model.

Stop power-intensive tasks when you do not need them

  • Turn off hotspot or tethering after other devices have finished using your connection.
  • When battery is low, reduce prolonged GPS navigation, streaming, camera use, and high-intensity gaming.
  • Calls and data use while moving can require the phone to work across changing network conditions; if practical, avoid long, power-intensive sessions when you need to conserve charge.

These activities can use substantial power regardless of whether 5G is enabled. Google lists them among factors to consider when trying to save Android battery; its Android battery guidance and Pixel guidance offer additional device-specific advice.

This does not mean you need to turn off GPS, mobile data, or other useful services all day. Instead, consider what is running during the period when you need to conserve charge. Stop tethering when the connected device is finished, reduce a long gaming or streaming session if a charger is not available, and keep navigation or camera use when you need it. These targeted choices preserve ordinary phone use better than broadly disabling features without checking their impact.

Use Battery Saver when the trade-offs are worthwhile

Turn on the built-in Battery Saver, Power saving, or Low Power mode when you need to extend the time before your next charge. On Android, Battery Saver can limit background activity, visual effects, network connections, and apps, so some updates or features may be delayed. The controls and exact effects depend on the manufacturer.

On a 5G-capable Pixel, standard Battery Saver may cause the phone to use 4G, depending on carrier behavior. Extreme Battery Saver pauses most apps; paused apps do not send notifications. Samsung Power saving offers configurable restrictions. Before enabling a more aggressive mode, consider whether you rely on timely messages, work alerts, navigation, or background syncing. Google explains Pixel-specific behavior in its Battery Saver guide and general Android behavior in its battery guide.

Battery Saver is best understood as a short-term runtime tool with costs, not a network-only switch. Depending on the phone, it can reduce background activity, visual effects, network connections, or app behavior. That may mean delayed updates or fewer timely alerts. Before using the strongest mode, think about which notifications and functions you need to keep available; if you only need to stretch the charge modestly, a less aggressive setting may be a better fit.

On Pixel, Extreme Battery Saver goes further than standard Battery Saver: most apps are paused, and paused apps do not send notifications. That makes it potentially useful when conserving power is more important than staying continuously connected through every app, but unsuitable if you rely on alerts from apps that will be paused. Samsung’s configurable Power saving restrictions offer another example of why checking the phone’s own controls matters.

Keep the phone cool and check battery condition

Heat can make a charge run down faster. Avoid leaving the phone in direct sun or another hot place; if it becomes unusually warm, stop demanding tasks and let it cool. Google cautions that a hot battery drains faster even when the phone is not being used, and Samsung advises letting an overheating device cool. See Google’s Pixel battery advice and Samsung’s guidance.

Heat and battery age are different issues. A hot phone may lose charge faster under those conditions, while a chemically aged battery holds less charge than it did when new. If the phone repeatedly runs down unusually quickly, check both the battery-usage report and the battery-health information available for your model. A pattern of high app use suggests a settings or usage adjustment; degraded battery health may point toward service.

Apple distinguishes battery life—the time before recharging—from battery lifespan, the time until replacement. Chemical aging reduces how much charge a battery can hold; if health is degraded, a battery replacement through the manufacturer or an authorized provider may be appropriate. Settings can reduce current power use, but cannot restore capacity lost to aging. See Apple’s battery and performance guidance.

Samsung’s Ireland guidance, last updated 27 November 2025, presents an 20–80% range as battery-care guidance and describes Battery protection. A lower charging cap is an optional measure for battery lifespan, not a way to make the current charge last longer: it means starting with less stored energy. Feature names and limits vary by Galaxy device. Details are in Samsung’s Ireland support article.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep charging-limit advice separate from immediate battery-saving advice. A cap can be a lifespan-care choice for someone who usually has access to a charger, but it deliberately limits how much energy is stored for the next outing. It will not make the phone’s current charge last longer. If your immediate need is to recharge away from an outlet, a compatible USB-C power bank can provide another recharge; it does not reduce 5G drain, restore battery health, or extend the charge already in the phone. Check the phone’s connector and charging compatibility before choosing one.

Choose the least disruptive change that solves the problem

Option Potential benefit Trade-off to consider
5G Auto or Adaptive connectivity Keeps 5G available when useful while allowing the phone to manage connectivity. Availability and behavior depend on the phone, carrier, and network. Apple says 5G Auto switches to LTE when 5G is not noticeably better.
LTE-only Can reduce cellular power demand in some situations. No 5G access while selected; actual battery effect varies by location and network.
Battery Saver Limits selected activity to extend time before charging. Background refresh, network behavior, visual effects, or notifications may be affected.
App restrictions Targets apps that the battery report identifies as using power. Background updates and alerts from restricted apps may be delayed.
Battery service Addresses reduced capacity when a battery is chemically aged or degraded. Requires service and does not apply to a healthy battery whose drain comes from settings or usage.

Make one change at a time and observe the phone through your usual routine and locations. That helps distinguish a useful adjustment from a change that merely disrupts alerts or access. The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal percentage or number of hours saved by switching from 5G to LTE.

A practical order is to leave adaptive 5G on if it is available, review the battery report, and then make one targeted adjustment based on what you find. If you still want to compare LTE-only use, try it in the same places and under roughly similar use, then weigh any observed difference against losing 5G access. If the phone is hot, let it cool; if health is degraded, consider battery service instead of progressively disabling more functions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does turning off 5G save battery?

It can reduce cellular power demand in some situations, but there is no universal amount of battery life saved. The result depends on your phone, carrier network, coverage, and how you use the device. Try adaptive 5G first; compare LTE-only use in your usual locations if 5G is not important there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use 5G Auto or LTE?

Use 5G Auto or your phone’s adaptive connectivity option as a starting point if you want 5G available when useful. On iPhone, Apple says 5G Auto switches to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience. Choose LTE-only if 5G is unnecessary and you want to test whether it helps your phone’s runtime, knowing you will give up 5G while it is selected.

Why does my phone battery drain so fast on 5G?

Some 5G configurations can use more power; Samsung notes that some non-standalone deployments use LTE and 5G together and may make a phone warmer. But 5G may not be the only cause. Check the battery-usage report for apps and look at screen activity, hotspot use, navigation, streaming, gaming, heat, and battery condition.

Will Battery Saver turn off 5G?

It depends on the phone and carrier. Google says a 5G-capable Pixel may use 4G while standard Battery Saver is on, depending on carrier network behavior. Battery Saver can also limit background activity and other functions. Pixel Extreme Battery Saver pauses most apps, and paused apps do not send notifications.

Does an 80% charging limit make my phone last longer during the day?

No. A lower charging cap is an optional battery-lifespan measure, not a way to extend the current charge. It gives you less stored energy to start with. If a degraded battery no longer holds enough charge, settings cannot restore its lost capacity; consider battery-health guidance or authorized service.

The Bottom Line

For a practical first step, use 5G Auto or Adaptive connectivity if your phone supports it. If the battery still runs down quickly, inspect battery use and make targeted changes to apps, display settings, or high-demand activities before restricting everything. LTE-only and Battery Saver can help in some circumstances, but both have trade-offs. There is no guaranteed 5G battery-saving figure; the right choice depends on your device, carrier, network, battery condition, and daily use.
