To make a new Android phone last longer between charges, start by lowering screen brightness and shortening screen timeout. Then check Battery usage for apps with unusually high power use, keep battery optimization enabled, and use Battery Saver when you need to conserve a low charge. These changes can limit background activity or delay notifications, so choose them around the alerts and features you rely on.
1. Reduce screen power use first
The display is one of the easiest things to adjust. Lower brightness to a comfortable level, set the screen to turn off sooner when idle, and switch it off when you are finished using the phone. Adaptive brightness can help manage brightness as conditions change, though you may prefer to adjust it manually in some situations.

Google and Samsung both recommend reducing brightness and shortening screen timeout. The setting names and paths vary by manufacturer and Android version, so search Settings for “brightness” or “screen timeout” if the labels below do not match your phone.

2. Find apps using more battery than expected
Open Settings and look for Battery, then Battery usage or a similarly named screen. Review which apps are using power. If an app you rarely use is consuming a surprising amount, check its background activity or battery setting and restrict it if it does not need to keep working when you are not actively using it.

Be selective: restricting background work can delay notifications or updates. Avoid doing it to messaging, accessibility, safety, or other apps where timely operation matters to you. Google’s Pixel guidance on Adaptive Battery and app optimization explains that app optimization can reduce background activity and may affect notifications.
3. Leave adaptive battery features enabled
If your phone offers Adaptive Battery or app battery optimization, leaving it enabled can help limit power use by apps that do not need to run constantly. Availability, behavior, and menu names differ among Android manufacturers and software versions.

Google says Pixel’s Adaptive Battery learns usage patterns and optimizes based on recent app use. On Pixel, that learning can take a few weeks to take full effect after setup or a reset; this timing is specific to Google’s Pixel guidance and should not be assumed for every Android phone. Turn on Battery Saver, or your manufacturer’s equivalent, when the remaining charge needs to last. It can reduce background activity and may limit connections, features, app updates, or notifications. The exact restrictions depend on the phone, so check its on-screen description before relying on the mode during navigation or when you need immediate alerts.

Samsung calls its Galaxy option Power Saving Mode. Some Galaxy models also offer settings such as Light Performance Profile or Wi-Fi power saving; these names and availability are Galaxy-specific and may vary by model and software version. Samsung lists examples in its Galaxy battery-life guidance.
5. Reduce demanding activities when you need more time
Some activities naturally ask more of the phone, especially when used for a long time. When conserving charge, shorten or pause the ones you can do without. This is a situational trade-off, not a reason to avoid these features all the time.

Actual runtime varies with coverage, apps, features, calls, and the particular phone; the official guidance does not establish a guaranteed number of extra hours for any one setting. 6. Keep the phone cool
Avoid leaving the phone in hot conditions, such as direct sun or a hot car. Google says, “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use,” and warns that this drain can damage the battery. The guidance cited here does not specify a single ideal temperature, so focus on avoiding excessive heat rather than chasing a precise target.

7. Charge according to the phone maker’s advice
You do not need to run the battery from full to zero to teach the phone its capacity. For charging accessories, follow the manufacturer’s guidance. Google recommends using the adapter supplied with a Pixel phone and checking with the manufacturer before using another adapter, which may charge slowly or could damage a phone or battery. Why a new phone may seem to drain quickly
There is no single battery-life expectation that applies to every new Android phone. Model, network coverage, apps, calls, settings, software version, and regional configuration can all affect how long a charge lasts. Samsung’s UK support page specifically addresses a new phone that seems to be draining faster, while noting that real use and conditions matter: What to do if the battery of my new phone seems to be draining faster?
If the phone continues to lose charge unusually quickly, use its Battery usage screen to identify the app or activity involved, and consult your phone maker’s support instructions for the exact settings on your model. Android menu paths and feature availability are not universal.
