To make a Kindle Paperwhite battery last longer, lower the screen light to a comfortable level, turn off wireless when you do not need downloads or syncing, put the Kindle to sleep when you finish reading, and enable Power Saver. If the device is new or has just received a large batch of books, extra battery use during downloads, updates, and book indexing may be temporary.
Adjust the screen light without sacrificing comfort
Amazon recommends lowering the built-in light because illuminated devices use more battery. Use the lowest setting that remains comfortable for your reading conditions; you do not have to turn the light off.

To change it, swipe down from the home screen to open Quick Actions, or open Settings. While reading, tap the top of the screen to show the reading controls. Adjust brightness with the scale or plus and minus buttons. On compatible models, you can turn off the front light by long-pressing the brightness controls.

Turn off wireless when you are not using it
Disable the Kindle’s internet connection between tasks that need it if you want to conserve power. You will need wireless access for activities such as downloading books or syncing, so turn it back on when you need those features. Keeping wireless available is more convenient; switching it off when idle trades that convenience for reduced avoidable use.

Use sleep mode and enable Power Saver
When you finish reading, briefly press the power button once to put the Kindle to sleep. Amazon also recommends enabling Power Saver under Settings > Device Options. It places the device in a low-power sleep mode after a few hours without use.
Allow for downloads, updates, and indexing
A new or recently set-up Kindle may use more battery during its first few days as content downloads and updates install. Amazon recommends keeping it charging during this period.

Large downloads can also be followed by book indexing, which makes books searchable. Amazon notes that indexing affects battery life. Keep the Kindle connected to power during large downloads and for a while afterward, particularly after transferring a large library. A short-lived increase in drain around setup or a library transfer does not by itself establish that the battery is failing.
Check your Paperwhite model before choosing charging accessories
Use a compatible USB cable, preferably the one supplied with the Kindle. If you need a replacement, check the exact generation and edition before buying a cable or charger. Amazon’s guide index includes the 2024 Paperwhite (12th Generation), and its setup guidance says that the 2024 Paperwhite Signature Edition supports wired charging and Qi-certified wireless charging. Wireless charging is a charging option, not a way to extend reading time between charges.

If changing these settings and allowing setup or indexing activity to finish do not improve the situation, use Amazon device support or the official troubleshooting information for your specific Paperwhite. Amazon’s cited battery-conservation guidance does not give a diagnostic runtime threshold for battery failure, so a particular number of hours or days cannot establish battery health on its own.

Do not open the Kindle or attempt to replace its internal battery yourself. Amazon’s safety guidance for the Paperwhite Signature Edition (12th Generation) says battery replacement should be performed only by a qualified service provider. Follow the safety guidance for your exact model.
