To make calls and alerts vibrate even when your iPhone is silent, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics and choose Play in Silent Mode. Choose Always Play if you want vibration in both Ring and Silent modes. Ringtones, message alerts, keyboard feedback, and system interactions have additional controls of their own.
Make calls vibrate in Silent mode
- Open Settings and tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Tap Haptics.
- Choose Play in Silent Mode. To have calls and alerts vibrate in both Ring and Silent modes, choose Always Play.
- Return to Sounds & Haptics, tap Ringtone, then tap Haptics and select a pattern. Tap Create New Vibration to make a custom pattern.
The Haptics menu also includes Don’t Play in Silent Mode and Never Play. These options control when ringtone and alert vibration plays; they are separate from haptics for system interactions.

Choose vibration patterns for messages and other alerts
Set a pattern for an individual alert category from Settings > Sounds & Haptics. Open Text Tone, Calendar Alerts, or another category, tap Haptics, and select a pattern or Create New Vibration. Apple lists categories including voicemail, mail, sent mail, reminders, and AirDrop as well as text and calendar alerts. See Apple’s guide to changing iPhone sounds and vibrations.

For Messages, you can also go to Settings > Notifications > Messages > Sounds. From there, choose Haptics > None to disable message vibration, or open Text Tone > Haptics to select a pattern. To mute notifications from one conversation, use Hide Alerts for that conversation.

Turn on system and keyboard feedback
System and keyboard haptics are controlled separately from vibration for incoming calls and alerts:
- System controls and interactions: In Settings > Sounds & Haptics, turn on System Haptics. This provides tactile feedback for supported system actions. Apple describes haptic feedback as vibration felt during some actions, such as touching and holding an icon on the Home Screen.
- Keyboard: In Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback, select Haptic, or select both Sound and Haptic.
Understand Silent mode and vibration
Silent mode turns off ringing and alert sounds, but an iPhone may still vibrate. Apple documents that behavior in its Silence iPhone guide. On supported models, you can turn Silent mode on or off with the Action button if it is configured for Silent mode; press and hold it. Other models use the Ring/Silent switch. You can also manage Silent mode in Settings > Sounds & Haptics.

Fix an iPhone that does not vibrate
Check the Silent-mode vibration setting
Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics and confirm Play in Silent Mode is selected if you expect calls and alerts to vibrate while silent.

Check whether vibration is disabled globally
The setting at Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Vibration controls vibration across the iPhone. Turning it off disables all vibration, including vibration for earthquake, tsunami, and other emergency alerts. See Apple’s guidance on turning off vibration on iPhone.
