How to Make Your iPhone Flash for Notifications (LED Flash)

Turn on iPhone LED flash alerts in Accessibility settings and choose whether the camera light or screen flashes, including in Silent mode when available.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To make your iPhone flash for notifications, open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Flash for Alerts, turn on Flash for Alerts, then select LED Flash. You can also choose whether it flashes in Silent mode or while the phone is unlocked, if those controls appear on your iPhone.

Turn on LED flash alerts

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility, then Audio & Visual.
  3. Tap Flash for Alerts and turn it on.
  4. Select LED Flash to use the light beside the rear camera. Choose Screen or Both instead if you want the screen to flash, too.
  5. If the options are available, set Flash in Silent Mode and Flash While Unlocked to match your preferences.

Apple’s dedicated support instructions use slightly different labels and give the path as Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual > LED Flash for Alerts. Menu wording and available controls can vary by iOS version, so follow the closest matching options shown on your device. Apple Support’s LED flash alert instructions and the iPhone user guide document these paths.

LED Flash, Screen, or Both

LED Flash uses the rear indicator next to the camera. Screen uses the display, while Both uses the LED and screen together. These are options on the Flash for Alerts screen in Apple’s current iPhone guide.

Flash alerts in Silent mode

Turn on Flash in Silent Mode if you want the visual alert when the phone is silent. Apple’s support page calls the corresponding control Flash on Silent; it says to turn that setting off to prevent LED flashes in Silent mode. If you do not see either label, your iOS version may expose different options.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Flash while the iPhone is unlocked

The current user guide lists Flash While Unlocked as a control. Apple’s dedicated support article, by contrast, says LED Flash for Alerts works only while the device is locked. Because Apple’s documentation differs on this point, use the unlocked setting if it appears in your iPhone’s options rather than assuming the behavior is identical across versions.

What to expect from the alert

Apple describes the feature as a visual alert for people who may miss audible notifications. It is a built-in Accessibility setting; normal setup does not require an app, accessory, or replacement part. A flash is not a guarantee that every notification will trigger an alert. Apple’s hearing accessibility overview includes visual alerts among its hearing accessibility features.
