How to Make Your Frontend Feel Product-Specific, Not AI-Generated

Make an AI-assisted frontend feel intentional by grounding its content, structure, visual system, states, and responsive behavior in the product.

To make an AI-assisted frontend feel less generic, start with the product: define who the page serves, what they need to do, and what information and behavior support that task. Then fix the page’s structure and hierarchy, align it with the product’s existing visual system, complete its real states and responsive behavior, and polish the appearance last. A particular font, palette, or card layout is not inherently an “AI look”; judge changes by whether they fit the product and help people use it.

Why can a frontend feel AI-generated?

Often, the useful diagnosis is not that a page has a particular telltale font or color. It is that its decisions feel interchangeable: the content, layout, controls, and visual treatment could belong to almost any product. OpenAI’s frontend prompting guidance says the design should fit the application’s domain and subject matter. InterfaceKit’s practical guide makes a similar point: replace generic decisions with product-specific ones.

These are recommendations, not the results of a controlled comparison showing that one design feature causes an “AI-generated” impression. Treat the phrase as a prompt to inspect fit, hierarchy, consistency, and usability—not as an objective defect with a universal visual cure.

Before changing the CSS, describe the page’s job. A focused page contract prevents cosmetic work from obscuring the real problem. Write down:

  • Who uses this page, and what are they trying to accomplish?
  • What should they understand first, and what is the page’s primary action?
  • Which content is real, and which cases must the page handle?
  • Which existing routes, behaviors, analytics, and keyboard interactions must keep working?

Use those answers to remove content that does not support the task and make the primary action easy to find. Avoid adding badges, statistics, containers, or decorative elements just to make a screen look more designed. A work-focused operational interface and a promotional page have different needs; the visual treatment should follow the page’s purpose.

Repair structure before styling

Work from meaning outward: confirm the purpose and content, organize the page, establish hierarchy, then refine shared components, states, and decoration. InterfaceKit presents this as an ordered practitioner workflow; it is useful guidance, not proof that the sequence guarantees a better outcome.

Make the important information and action prominent in relation to each other. Use headings and spacing to show which content belongs together. The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative’s design guidance advises: “Use whitespace and proximity to make relationships between content more apparent.” If a section does not help someone understand or complete the page’s task, remove it or explain why it belongs.

Use the product’s visual language

If the site already has coherent conventions, preserve them. Replacing them with a fresh style can make one page look distinctive while making the product as a whole feel inconsistent. Reuse the project’s established components and patterns across routes.

Where the system needs clearer foundations, define a small set of reusable tokens for page and surface backgrounds, primary and muted text, accents, and typography roles. Give the model a coherent visual reference or screenshot, real page content, and these constraints rather than asking it to invent a complete style from a vague prompt. OpenAI’s frontend design guidance recommends visual references, real content, and reusable design tokens as practical techniques.

Check the choices against the task

When deciding whether to keep a design choice, ask whether it fits the user and domain, preserves the existing system, clarifies the content and action, remains accessible, handles real states and screen sizes, and can be maintained across pages. These are practical review criteria, not a scored benchmark.

How do I make an AI website not look like AI?

Cover the states people actually encounter

A polished populated screen is not a complete interface. Check realistic content lengths and the states relevant to the page, including loading, empty, error, and populated conditions. Make sure controls behave as expected, feedback is clear, and text or interactive elements do not overlap or unexpectedly shift the layout.

Review responsive behavior on the project’s supported breakpoints. InterfaceKit illustrates checks at 1440px, 768px, and 390px; treat those as examples from its guide, not universal standards. Use the widths that match your product’s requirements.

Polish only after the page works

Once purpose, content, hierarchy, and behavior are sound, refine typography, palette, imagery, and motion to suit the product. No single aesthetic treatment is evidence of quality by itself. Keep contrast and other accessibility considerations in the review rather than treating them as final decoration.

How do I make a website not look vibe coded?

Review the rendered interface, not only its source or a single screenshot. Compare the page with the intended visual reference and related product pages, then exercise its meaningful interactions. Check whether the content fits, controls and states are consistent, keyboard focus is visible, and common elements appear in predictable places.

The W3C’s accessibility design guidance covers contrast, clear feedback, and grouping content with headings and spacing. Its consistent visual design pattern says: “Use a consistent visual design across groups of pages.” Consistency does not mean every page must look identical; it means users should not have to relearn familiar controls and patterns without a good reason.

A screenshot comparison can reveal visual differences, but it cannot establish that the page works. Validate the interactions, responsive layouts, and relevant states in the running interface, and check the result against the needs of your own product and users.
