Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo make Word capitalize the first letter of each sentence as you type, turn on the sentence-capitalization option in AutoCorrect. The setting is in different places on desktop, web, and mobile—and Word for the web may not offer the same controls as desktop Word.
Turn on automatic sentence capitalization in desktop Word
Windows
- Open File > Options > Proofing.
- Select AutoCorrect Options.
- On the AutoCorrect tab, enable Capitalize first letter of sentences, if that option appears in your version and language configuration.
- Select OK to close the dialogs.
Microsoft documents the route to AutoCorrect settings in its Word AutoCorrect instructions. The available checkboxes can vary, so the exact option may not appear in every installation.

Mac
- Open the Word menu.
- Select Preferences, then AutoCorrect.
- Turn on the sentence-capitalization option if it is listed in your version.
Microsoft documents this route to AutoCorrect preferences, but the individual options shown can differ between versions.
Can you enable it in Word for the web?
In Word for the web, go to Review > arrow below Editor > AutoCorrect Options. The web version has fewer AutoCorrect controls than desktop Word, and the sentence-capitalization toggle may not be available in your account or interface. If you cannot find it, open the document in desktop Word and change the setting there. See Microsoft’s AutoCorrect guidance for Word.

Change capitalization on a phone or tablet
On mobile, AutoCorrect behavior is controlled through the device’s language or keyboard settings rather than a common Word setting. Microsoft documents this iPhone and iPad path:
- Open the device’s Settings.
- Go to General > Keyboard.
- Switch on automatic capitalization.
On Android, the path depends on the device and keyboard app; look in the keyboard’s text correction or typing settings. Microsoft’s mobile AutoCorrect guidance covers the iOS route and notes that device settings control the behavior.

- Compact design saves desktop space and allows for close, comfortable mouse position.
- Optimized key spacing and key travel for fast, fluid typing.
- Sleek, low-profile design complements any workspace.
- Expressive input key[2] for quick access to emojis, symbols, and more.
- Connect up to 3 devices and switch seamlessly between them[1].
Capitalize sentences in text you already wrote
The typing-time AutoCorrect option does not reformat existing text. To convert selected text in desktop Word, select it and choose Home > Change Case > Sentence case. Sentence case capitalizes the first letter of each sentence; Capitalize Each Word instead changes the first letter of every word. Microsoft’s Change the case of text instructions explain the options. Word for the web does not support this Change Case feature, so use desktop Word or adjust the casing manually in the web app.

If automatic capitalization behaves unexpectedly
- The option is missing: Check whether you are using Word for the web, where fewer AutoCorrect options are available, or desktop Word with a different version or language configuration.
- Word changes a word you wanted to keep: Press Ctrl+Z immediately to undo an unwanted AutoCorrect change. AutoCorrect may also have exceptions for text after abbreviations; the available exception controls depend on the Office app and version.
- You need a custom correction: Desktop Word lets you add or remove AutoCorrect entries. Word for the web does not let you edit the AutoCorrect list; open the document in desktop Word to make those changes. See Microsoft’s AutoCorrect entry instructions.
