To have Windows 11 reopen eligible apps after a restart, go to Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and turn on “Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when I sign in.” The feature applies to restartable apps; it does not guarantee that every app, unsaved document, or previous session will be restored.
Turn on the restartable-app setting
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Turn on Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when I sign in.
Microsoft documents this setting in its [instructions for stopping Edge from starting automatically](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/stop-microsoft-edge-from-starting-automatically). Its wording refers specifically to restartable apps, so whether a particular app reopens depends on the app’s support for this behavior.
Restartable apps versus apps that launch at every sign-in
Windows also lets you configure apps to open whenever you sign in. That is different from restoring restartable apps after a restart: startup settings launch selected apps on sign-in, but do not establish that their previous working state will return.

Choose which apps start automatically
Use Settings > Apps > Startup to turn individual startup apps on or off. You can also manage registered apps in Task Manager’s Startup apps tab. Startup folders are another option for some apps absent from those lists.
Only enable automatic launch for apps you want ready at sign-in. Startup apps can slow startup and add background activity; Microsoft discusses these effects in its Windows performance tips. The support guidance does not quantify the effect of the restartable-app setting itself.

If the option is missing or apps do not reopen
- Confirm that the device is running Windows 11 and check the current Accounts > Sign-in options page, since Settings screens can change.
- Check whether the app is restartable. The setting does not promise restoration for every app or its prior state.
- If your goal is to open an app at every sign-in, configure it separately under Settings > Apps > Startup, Task Manager’s Startup apps tab, or an applicable startup folder.
