Pass the full page URL as a single, properly encoded value to the screenshot endpoint. That keeps the page’s own query parameters—such as filters or locale—from being mistaken for parameters to the screenshot API. If the resulting request is too long, use a POST-body or path-based method only when the service documents it, and check that service’s input limit.
Why a long query string can break a thumbnail request
A URL inside another URL has two layers of parameters: the target page’s query string and the screenshot endpoint’s query string. If you append the target URL raw, its ampersands may be interpreted as separators for the outer request. The renderer can then receive a truncated target URL or treat part of the page query as an API option.

Percent-encode the target URL as one parameter value. Google Search Central’s URL guidance says, “Characters defined by the standard as reserved must be percent encoded.” This protects URL structure; it does not shorten the target URL or guarantee that a provider will accept it.

Using curl
Use --data-urlencode rather than manually joining the target URL to the endpoint:

Using JavaScript URL utilities
Build the outer request with URL and URLSearchParams, rather than splitting or concatenating strings by hand:

What to do when the request is still too long
Encoding preserves parameter boundaries, but it does not eliminate length ceilings. The maximum can apply to the target URL, the encoded outer request, or both, depending on the provider and infrastructure.

Screenshot API documents its GET URL parameter and also documents POST forms for some operations; Screenshot API.org describes JSON POST for complex configuration. Neither establishes that every screenshot endpoint accepts a target URL in a POST body. Follow the selected endpoint’s current reference.
Keep only the query parameters the page needs
Do not delete a long query string wholesale. Parameters can determine filters, pagination, language, selected records, or other page state, so removing them can produce a different thumbnail. Google advises using as few parameters as possible when possible, meaning unnecessary values should be trimmed—not that content-changing parameters are disposable.

- Parse the target URL with the language’s URL utilities and verify that its scheme and host are expected.
- Preserve every parameter needed to render the desired page state.
- Remove only parameters you know are irrelevant, such as tracking values that do not affect the rendered page.
- Encode the complete remaining target URL as one value in the renderer’s documented request format.
Choose thumbnail settings and validate the response
Set only options supported by the chosen renderer. Screenshot API lists viewport width and height, full-page capture, PNG/JPEG/WebP formats, quality, scale, dark mode and delay; its documentation notes a 4,320-pixel cap on full-page height. Those options and limits are provider-specific, not general screenshot API defaults.

- Use full-page capture only when the thumbnail must show content below the initial viewport.
- Check the HTTP status and response headers, then confirm that the response is actually an image rather than an error document or pending-job response.
- For example, Screenshot API documents a final-page status response header; Webshrinker documents 200 for ready images and 202 when generation is still underway.
A resized thumbnail is useful for layout and page state, but small text may not remain legible enough to verify exact characters. Screenshot API also documents returning page text alongside an image; treat that as a provider-specific option, not a property of thumbnails generally.
Keep credentials out of public image URLs
Do not put a production API key in an image src URL exposed to browsers. Screenshot API warns that query-string key values can be visible in page source and logs, and documents bearer authentication. Webshrinker documents server-side Basic authentication and pre-signed URLs. Use the selected provider’s documented server-side or signed-request method, and avoid logging credentials.

The screenshot shows the wrong page or loses filters
The target URL may have been appended raw, so an ampersand was treated as an outer API separator. Encode the entire target URL as one parameter, using the language’s URL utilities or curl’s --data-urlencode. Confirm that content-changing parameters remain present.

The API rejects the request as too long
Check the provider’s documented target-URL ceiling and any request-line or proxy limits. Encoding can add characters. If the service supports it for that endpoint, use a POST body or path-based route; otherwise shorten only known-unneeded parameters or choose a service with a suitable documented limit.
The output is an error page or no image
Inspect the HTTP status, response headers and body before saving the result as an image. Confirm that the target uses HTTP or HTTPS if required, that authentication is valid, and that any asynchronous endpoint has finished generating the capture. Provider status conventions differ.
The thumbnail does not match the expected page state
Compare the exact target URL being submitted with the intended filters, locale, pagination and other state. Do not remove unfamiliar parameters unless you have established that they are irrelevant. Check the renderer’s supported viewport, delay and page-load controls if content appears before it finishes loading.
The API key appears in browser source or logs
Remove it from public query URLs and move capture requests to a server you control, using the provider’s documented authentication method. Rotate a key if it has already been exposed.
