A visible hero image—particularly one that is the page’s Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) element—should load eagerly, not lazily: delaying it can hold up the page’s main visual content.
What lazy loading does—and what it does not do
Adding loading="lazy" tells the browser it may defer requesting an image until its own heuristics consider the image close enough to the viewport. It does not resize the source file, create a thumbnail, or choose a crop. Those are separate image-production and layout decisions.

For a website thumbnail, first decide the dimensions and crop the design needs, then provide a suitable image resource and tell the browser when it may load. The same principles apply to a hero image, but its initial visibility changes the loading choice.

Choose the frame and crop
Set the thumbnail’s intended shape from the actual card or content design. If the entire image must remain visible, use object-fit: contain; this may leave empty space in the frame. If the image should fill the frame, use object-fit: cover, which crops excess image area without distorting it. Adjust object-position to keep the important subject in view.

Do not stretch an image to fit a differently shaped box. Cropping and stretching are not interchangeable: cropping removes part of the image, while stretching changes its proportions.
Reserve space before the image arrives
Give an image intrinsic width and height values that reflect its aspect ratio, or reserve the frame with CSS aspect-ratio. The browser can then allocate space before the image data downloads, reducing unexpected layout movement. Match the dimensions and ratio to the intended image; do not use mismatched values to force a crop.
Serve a size suited to the slot
A small thumbnail slot generally should not need to download an unnecessarily large original. Offer responsive candidates with srcset and describe the rendered slot with sizes. The browser uses those hints to select an offered resource appropriate to the layout. The values below are examples only: adapt the candidates, breakpoints, dimensions and alt text to the real page.

Set loading behavior by image position
Below-the-fold thumbnails
Use loading="lazy" for images that are not initially visible and can wait until a reader approaches them. This can avoid requesting offscreen images immediately. Browser behavior is heuristic, so lazy loading does not mean a precise, fixed distance from the viewport.
Visible hero and likely LCP image
Do not lazy-load an image that is highly likely to be in the initial viewport, especially the LCP image. web.dev states: “Images that are highly likely to be in-viewport, and in particular LCP images, should not be lazy-loaded.” Omit the loading attribute or use loading="eager"; if this is the important LCP image, consider fetchpriority="high".

alt="Description of the hero image">Use responsive source options for the hero too when its rendered size varies. If it is a CSS background—or is not actually the LCP element—check how the browser discovers and prioritizes the resource before applying this markup mechanically.
Check the result on the real layout
- Inspect the thumbnail at the responsive sizes where it appears; make sure the focal subject remains visible after cropping.
- Confirm the frame has the intended aspect ratio before the image loads and does not jump when it arrives.
- Check that
sizesreflects the actual layout and that the offeredsrcsetcandidates are appropriate for it. - Verify that below-fold images can be deferred while the visible hero is requested promptly.
- For performance work, inspect resource priority and evaluate both lab and field performance. A markup change alone does not establish a particular LCP improvement.
Troubleshoot common thumbnail problems
The image is blurry or downloads too much data
Check the rendered slot width, available srcset candidates, and the sizes expression. If the browser is not offered an appropriate variant for the layout, generate and serve suitable sizes rather than relying on lazy loading to reduce file size.
The subject is cut off
object-fit: cover intentionally crops to fill the frame. Change object-position to shift the focal point, adjust the crop, or use contain if showing the full image matters more than filling the box.

The thumbnail stretches or changes the page layout
Make sure the image is not being forced into a mismatched ratio. Supply accurate intrinsic dimensions or reserve the frame with aspect-ratio, and use an intentional fit rule rather than stretching.
The hero appears late
Remove loading="lazy" from an initially visible hero image. Use eager loading or omit the loading attribute; consider high fetch priority when it is the important LCP image. If it is a CSS background, inspect when and how that resource is discovered before changing priority.

No. Use it for images below the fold that can wait; do not lazy-load an initially visible hero image, particularly if it is the LCP image.
