The right dimensions depend on the portfolio platform and its responsive crop behavior; there is no single size or aspect ratio that fits every agency site.
1. Choose a view that represents the project
Start with the published website or an approved project image. Select a frame that makes the project’s visual identity recognizable at small size: for example, a distinctive homepage section, product page, or carefully composed desktop view. Avoid a crop that is mostly blank space or hides the feature that makes the work identifiable.

If the thumbnail also serves as the page’s social or structured-data image, choose an image relevant to and representative of that page. Google Search Central advises against generic images such as a site logo in that metadata context: Google’s article structured data guidance.
2. Find out how the portfolio card handles images
Before cropping, inspect the destination portfolio’s card dimensions, aspect ratio, responsive behavior, and whether it crops, contains, or generates alternate renditions. Make an export for the actual use rather than sending an unnecessarily large original to a small card. Keep a larger source image or case-study image when readers need to inspect interface details.

Adobe Portfolio illustrates why platform behavior matters: it generates multiple image renditions, and the displayed result depends on site and page container settings. Its guidance is specific to Adobe Portfolio, not a universal standard: Adobe Portfolio image size guide.
Useful starting points for a thumbnail
- Match the visible card’s shape so the platform does not unexpectedly trim the important part.
- Keep the project’s key visual near the center or within the platform’s known safe crop area.
- Export a separate small thumbnail if the portfolio supports linking it to a full-size image or case study. The Guidelines for Indian Government Websites (GIGW) recommend correctly sized imagery and describe linking a thumbnail to a full-size copy: GIGW.
3. Crop and export in a format the platform supports
Pick the format based on the image and destination, then confirm that the portfolio accepts it. The Government of India Digital Brand Identity Manual page lists WebP for photographs, continuous tones, and gradients; PNG for lossless transparency; and JPEG/JPG for photographs. This is guidance attributed to that manual page, not a universal rule for every portfolio platform: Digital Brand Identity Manual.
| Image content or need | Format to consider | Check before publishing |
|---|---|---|
| Photographic or screenshot imagery with many colors | JPEG, or WebP where supported | Check for compression artifacts around small text and fine interface edges. |
| Transparency or crisp graphic edges | PNG | Check whether the platform preserves transparency and whether the larger file is necessary. |
| WebP-supported publishing stack | WebP | Confirm format support in the portfolio platform and any downstream sharing workflow. |
No current official source establishes a universal pixel size or file-weight ceiling for agency thumbnails. The Digital Brand Identity Manual page states “Thumbnail images Maximum up to 100KB” and “High-resolution photographs Maximum up to 5MB”; treat these as that manual’s stated recommendations, not mandatory limits for private portfolios. The original manual was not opened for this guidance, so check the current document and its context before relying on those numbers as formal policy.
Rank #2
Adobe Portfolio separately recommends thumbnails or small images under 500 KB, standard images of 300 KB–1 MB, and full-width images of 500 KB–2 MB; it says its largest generated rendition is 3840 pixels wide. Those figures describe Adobe Portfolio guidance only, not a benchmark for Indian agencies or other platforms. See its image size guide.
4. Optimize without making the design unreadable
Reduce dimensions and file weight to suit the rendered card, but inspect the result at the size visitors will actually see. Text inside a screenshot may be too small to read in a thumbnail; the card should still communicate the project’s overall look. Keep essential project titles and navigation as HTML text rather than baking them into the image.
GIGW says that reducing image file size helps minimize web-page download time and recommends correctly sized, optimized imagery. Treat that as useful performance and accessibility guidance; its presence does not make every recommendation a binding rule for a private agency portfolio.

5. Add accessible text and preserve the project context
Write alt text that tells a visitor who cannot see the image what the thumbnail conveys. For example, “Desktop homepage for a Jaipur hotel booking website, featuring a room search form and blue-and-sand color palette” is more informative than “website screenshot.” If the image is purely decorative and the surrounding text already conveys its content, follow the portfolio platform’s accessibility controls for decorative images.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGIGW discourages using images of text when ordinary text can convey the information and emphasizes alternate descriptions. Google also identifies alt text as important for people who cannot see images: Google Images guidance. Keep the project name, headings, and calls to action in HTML whenever possible.
6. Confirm rights before showcasing client work
Public visibility is not permission to reuse a client’s site, logo, photography, or third-party assets in a portfolio. Confirm the agency’s rights and any client approval requirements before publishing. This is a practical rights check, not legal advice.

Adobe’s screenshot policy applies specifically to screenshots of Adobe products; its conditions include restrictions on third-party content in the screenshot and attribution in applicable uses. It does not grant rights to client websites or their assets: Adobe screenshot usage policy. Google’s image metadata documentation describes rights fields such as a Web Statement of Rights, but metadata does not itself grant permission: Google image license metadata guidance.
7. Publish and test the card
- Upload the optimized export through the portfolio platform’s normal image field or content workflow.
- Preview the card in the actual portfolio grid and on a narrow screen. Look for unexpected cropping, softness, unreadable detail, or a background that clashes with the page.
- Open the published page and verify the image loads, the alt text is present where appropriate, and the card links to the correct case study or larger image.
- If the platform creates responsive renditions, inspect the displayed version rather than assuming the original file is what visitors receive.
Platform behavior and output size vary; Adobe Portfolio’s responsive renditions are one example, not a general standard. The workflow above is a practical check, not a prescribed test procedure from the cited sources.

If you need a clean capture of a live website rather than a manual browser screenshot, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot from one GET request. The API supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output; this example requests WebP. Replace the target URL with the page you have permission to capture:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted like a visitor and removed, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets, before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the outcome reported in response headers. An MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Frequently Asked Questions
Is there one correct thumbnail size for every Indian agency portfolio?
No. Choose dimensions and crop based on the destination card and the platform’s responsive image behavior.
Should I use the same image for a portfolio card and a case study?
You can, but a separate thumbnail linked to a larger image or case study preserves detail when the card is small.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does public access to a client website mean I can use its screenshot in my portfolio?
No. Confirm permission for the client site, logo, photographs, and third-party material before displaying them.
