Choose the right capture for a directory card
For most curated directories, capture the visible first viewport or a specific hero element. Full-page screenshots are useful when the entire page is the subject, but their tall, dense layout is usually a poor fit for a small card. Playwright supports page, full-page, buffer, and element screenshots; its documentation notes that capturing a single element can be useful: Playwright screenshots.

Set the viewport to suit the actual card design, then apply one consistent crop or fit rule in the directory’s image component. The right dimensions depend on the destination layout; there is no universal thumbnail size established here. Avoid mixing desktop and mobile captures unless that variation is intentional.

Give each project a stable slug, canonical homepage URL, output path, and, when needed, a CSS selector for the visual region to capture. Stable identifiers prevent filename collisions and make it clear which image belongs to which project.

Keep the canonical URL separate from the output name: a project can change its website without requiring a rename of the directory asset.
Capture with Playwright
Install Playwright for Python and its browser binaries according to the official Playwright documentation. This example reads a JSON manifest, uses one viewport for every project, captures either the selected element or the first viewport, and writes files using each stable output path. Create output directories before running it.

For pages with delayed content or animation, use an appropriate selector wait or increase/tune the delay after inspecting the output. Avoid replacing an approved image with an empty or failed capture: the example skips unsuccessful navigation and missing selectors so the previous file remains available.

Use shot-scraper for a manifest-driven command-line workflow
shot-scraper Release 0.14 documentation describes a command-line utility for automated website screenshots and documents multi-shot capture plus a GitHub Actions workflow that can write captured images back to a repository. The cited document is specifically Release 0.14; check the current project documentation before relying on version-specific commands. This approach is useful when repository-managed configuration and repeatable batch runs matter more than custom browser logic.
Whichever capture tool you use, structure the run so one failed site is reported and skipped rather than causing a blank image to silently replace a reviewed thumbnail. Add an editorial review step before committing refreshed images.
Automate refreshes without losing editorial control
- Maintain the manifest as the source of truth for project slug, homepage, output, and optional selector.
- Capture with consistent viewport and browser settings, using the intended first view or element.
- Write outputs to stable, collision-free paths and preserve existing approved files when capture fails.
- Review changed images for blank states, cookie dialogs, broken assets, unexpected redesigns, or unwanted overlays.
- Commit or publish only reviewed replacements; run the workflow on a schedule or manual trigger if the list changes often enough to justify the upkeep.

Choose image format, persistence, and delivery deliberately
Store the approved image files with the directory or in storage you control, and serve them at the size appropriate to the card. Use descriptive alt text that identifies the linked project or describes meaningful visual content; provide a neutral fallback when a screenshot cannot be captured or when reuse is uncertain.
OpenGraph.io’s screenshot API documents controls for viewport presets, full-page capture, selectors, format, quality, dark mode, and capture delay.
