For affiliate resource pages, the most reliable thumbnail workflow is to capture each destination at the same browser viewport, crop, and output size, then check the result at the size readers will actually see. Use a viewport screenshot for most cards; reserve full-page captures for cases where the whole layout itself matters, because a long page often becomes unreadable when shrunk.
Choose what the thumbnail should show
A thumbnail should help readers recognize the destination, not reproduce every detail of its page. Decide what needs to be visible before choosing a capture method:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- First screen: Use a viewport capture when the page’s header, hero image, product, or opening content identifies the destination.
- One feature or section: Capture a specific element when a particular product panel, pricing block, or other page area is the useful visual cue.
- Whole page: Use a full-page capture only when the page’s overall structure matters. At card size, text and small interface details may be too small to read.
These are different capture choices, not interchangeable quality settings. Playwright documents viewport, full-page, and clipped captures in its screenshot guide and Page API.
Make the cards visually consistent
Consistency comes from repeating the same capture and display rules across the resource list. Set a standard browser viewport, use the same crop approach, and export a format your page supports. Then inspect the image in the actual card layout: an image that looks clear at full size may lose its identifying details when rendered small.
#1 Best Overall
- Keep viewport dimensions and crop position consistent from one destination to the next.
- Choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP according to your site’s image pipeline and display needs; Playwright supports all three.
- Prefer a viewport capture over full-page by default when the card is small.
- Check that a card’s dimensions and responsive behavior preserve the image’s useful subject.
Capture thumbnails with Playwright
For a small batch, a custom crop, or an existing build pipeline, Playwright lets you load a URL in a browser and save the rendered page as an image. Install Playwright and its Chromium browser first, then save this as capture.mjs and run it with Node.js. The script takes one URL, uses a fixed viewport, waits for network activity to settle, and writes a WebP viewport screenshot.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const url = process.argv[2];
if (!url) {
throw new Error('Usage: node capture.mjs https://example.com');
}
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
});
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 60000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'thumbnail.webp', type: 'webp' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Run it with node capture.mjs https://example.com. This captures the visible viewport, not the full page. For a full-page image, change the screenshot call to await page.screenshot({ path: 'thumbnail.webp', type: 'webp', fullPage: true });. For a fixed crop, use the documented clip rectangle; for an element image, locate the element and use its screenshot method. See Playwright’s screenshot guide and Page API for the supported options, including buffers, image type, scale, and clipping.

Wait for useful content, not just a successful navigation
A page can finish navigation before its most important image or section appears. If a known selector identifies the thumbnail’s subject, wait for it before capturing:
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 60000 });
await page.locator('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 15000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'thumbnail.webp', type: 'webp' });
Replace main with a selector that exists on the destination. For a site with slow-loading images or client-side rendering, use an appropriate selector or a deliberate short delay rather than assuming every page behaves alike.

Choose between manual capture, browser automation, and an API
Manual browser capture can be sensible for a handful of destinations. Keep the viewport, crop, and exported dimensions repeatable so the cards still look like one collection. Playwright is a better fit when you need repeatable browser settings, element selection, image processing, or integration into a build.
For a URL-driven workflow without maintaining a browser capture service, ScreenshotNeo is the first API to try: it removes consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and its paid plan starts at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. See ScreenshotNeo for details. OpenGraph.io also documents a URL-based screenshot endpoint with options for format, quality, full-page behavior, dimensions, selectors, and excluded selectors; its documentation does not establish price, uptime, or affiliate terms: OpenGraph.io documentation.
Before choosing any hosted service, check its current supported page behavior, pricing, privacy and retention terms, reliability information, and usage rights. The documented capture options alone do not establish how a provider performs or whether it offers an affiliate program.

Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one GET request. Create an API key, then use this cURL example to save a WebP screenshot; the parameters and options are documented at ScreenshotNeo documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

A screenshot is not automatically cleared for commercial reuse. Check the destination site’s terms, copyright and trademark rules, and any affiliate-program restrictions before putting its page content or marks into a published resource card. A permission statement for one site does not grant permission for another. The W3C screenshot guidance applies to screenshots of W3C’s own site under its stated condition; Amazon’s Associates operating policies separately restrict redistribution and use of Program Content.
Best Value
Disclose a commission relationship clearly and conspicuously near the recommendation or link. The FTC says that the phrase “affiliate link” alone may not explain that you earn a commission; its example wording is “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.” See the FTC’s Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking. If Amazon Associates terms apply to your site and region, Amazon requires the statement: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” Check the current Amazon Associates Operating Agreement and applicable regional terms.

- The image is blank or incomplete: The capture may have run before meaningful content rendered. Wait for a visible, destination-specific selector or adjust the wait condition; investigate bot checks or pages that fail to load.
- The capture times out: Some sites never reach network idle because of ongoing requests. Try
domcontentloadedand wait explicitly for the element the thumbnail needs, with a reasonable timeout. - The subject is cut off: A viewport screenshot captures only the visible area. Use a deliberate clip or element capture, or use full-page capture if the entire page is genuinely useful.
- The full-page card is too small to understand: Switch to the first screen or a relevant element, then inspect it at the actual card size.
- The grid looks uneven: Standardize viewport, crop, output format, and display dimensions; review the rendered cards rather than only the source files.
- The page changes between runs: Dynamic content, consent prompts, and late-loading elements can affect results. Use a stable wait target and verify the result before publishing.
Frequently asked questions
Should affiliate resource thumbnails show the whole website?
Usually not. A first-screen or element capture is often more identifiable at card size; use a full-page image only when the overall layout is the point.
Does an affiliate relationship give me permission to use a merchant’s screenshot?
No general permission follows from having an affiliate link. Check the specific destination’s terms and any program rules that apply to your use.
