vMix documents ways to sequence files and switch between inputs, but its documentation does not confirm that a video file failing to open or decode automatically triggers a switch to a backup playlist. Set up a fallback input or PlayList, then test the exact failure condition in your installed vMix version before relying on it unattended.
Choose the right vMix feature for the job
vMix has two different playlist-style tools. A List groups video or audio files inside one input. A PlayList sequences separate inputs and can automate switching between them. Choose based on how your media is organized—not on an assumption that either tool detects file errors.

| Feature | What it sequences | Relevant behavior |
|---|---|---|
| List | Files within one input | Auto Next is enabled by default for ordinary progression. Loop returns playback to the beginning. Disabled entries can be skipped, and the list can be exported as an M3U file. These behaviors do not establish that an unreadable file will be skipped. vMix List documentation |
| PlayList | Separate inputs | Can automate switching tasks or play videos sequentially. Manual Mode waits for the operator to click Next; each item can have its own start position, duration, transition, and transition time. PlayLists belong to the active preset. vMix PlayList documentation |
Build a fallback setup
- Decide what the backup should contain. If a sequence of files is the primary source, use a List for that content. For a separately controllable backup, add known-good content as a separate input or group it in a backup PlayList.
- Label the primary and backup clearly. Use names that make their roles obvious in the vMix input list and PlayList. Configure the intended transition for any backup item; PlayList items support their own transitions and transition times. vMix PlayList documentation
- Check media access and playback. Confirm that the files can be opened and played from the machine and storage location used for the production. A fallback is useful only if its media is available when needed.
- Keep a manual route available. If the production allows an operator to intervene, rehearse selecting the backup input or using PlayList Manual Mode and Next. Manual Mode is documented as waiting for the operator; test the controls in the actual preset.
Test the failure you need to handle
Do not treat normal end-of-file progression as proof of failed-file recovery. Test a safe copy of the project with the actual vMix release, media format, and storage arrangement. For example, use a test file that is known to be invalid or temporarily make a test file unavailable. Observe whether vMix stops, advances, or produces a signal your proposed automation can use. This is a validation procedure, not a documented guarantee of failover.
Record the result for each relevant failure case: a file that cannot be opened, a file that starts but cannot be decoded correctly, and a file that becomes unavailable during use may not behave alike. If the backup does not take over reliably in the test, plan for an operator to switch manually or change the production design rather than describing the setup as automatic.

What OnCompletion does—and does not establish
vMix documents the OnCompletion trigger for video, List, photos, and PowerPoint inputs when they reach the end, assuming Loop is disabled. That is a normal completion condition, not documented evidence that the trigger fires when a file fails to open or decode. vMix trigger documentation
If you use OnCompletion, disable Loop for the relevant input and test an ordinary end-of-file separately from a failed-file case. The trigger guide limits delay to 30 seconds and recommends PlayList or Scripting for long-running operations; neither point changes the documented end-of-media condition. vMix trigger documentation

Use scripting or the API only after confirming a failure signal
The vMix Web API can execute shortcut functions and expose vMix state; its documentation says API errors return HTTP 500. Web Scripting can run sequences of API-style functions with Sleep pauses. The documentation does not establish that a failed media open or decode creates a specific API error, state change, or event that can safely trigger a backup switch. vMix Web API documentation vMix Web Scripting documentation
- First identify an observable signal for the particular failure in your setup.
- Then verify that the signal distinguishes the failure from normal playback, transitions, or end-of-file.
- Only after that should a script or external monitor issue a switch command; test recovery and false triggers before using it in a live production.
Know the limits of built-in looping
vMix describes List and PlayList as basic ways to play videos consecutively and loop them. It separately states that vMix does not provide time-of-day scheduling for 24/7 television programming. Those capabilities do not establish recovery from an invalid or unavailable media file. vMix video-looping knowledge base

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than operate a vMix production, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; your computer does not have to stay on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded-video streams to YouTube, not camera-based vMix productions. Start a free day with StreamNeo.
