For ordinary words, keep the text as ordinary letters and apply the cursive look with CSS. Unicode cursive-looking mathematical letters are different characters, not a font style, and screen readers may not announce them as the words you intended. For real mathematics, preserve meaningful letter distinctions and use semantic markup such as MathML on the web.
First, identify what kind of text you have
“Unicode cursive” often means strings made from script-style or other mathematical alphanumeric characters that resemble Latin letters. They are encoded characters in their own right; they are not ordinary letters displayed in a cursive font. The right fix depends on whether they are decorative prose or mathematical notation.
| Use case | Recommended approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Decorative prose, such as a name, heading, bio, or social post | Use ordinary letters and apply the visual style separately | The underlying words remain readable and usable as text. |
| Mathematical notation where letter style distinguishes variables | Preserve the distinctions and encode the equation semantically, using MathML for web equations where appropriate | Changing styled letters to plain ones can erase mathematical meaning. |
Make decorative prose accessible
- Replace script-looking mathematical characters with the corresponding ordinary letters. Keep genuine punctuation and characters from other writing systems intact.
- Apply the visual treatment in markup and CSS. For example:
<span class="script-style">Hello</span>, with the cursive appearance defined by the.script-styleCSS rule. - Check that the same readable words appear in headings, links, buttons, form labels, and any text users may copy or search for.
- If the visual treatment communicates information—not just decoration—explain that information in words or structure as well. Do not make appearance the only way to understand it.
Do not rely on an ARIA label as a blanket workaround for decorative text encoded with the wrong characters. Fix the underlying text, then test how the styled version is exposed to assistive technology.
Unicode’s Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, U+1D400–U+1D7FF, is intended for mathematical or technical notation, not nontechnical text. The Unicode Standard, Chapter 22 explains that differently styled letters can have distinct mathematical meanings. Although these symbols have compatibility decompositions to base Latin and Greek letters, that does not make them unsuitable for mathematics: mapping them to base letters can remove distinctions. For ordinary prose, author the ordinary letters directly rather than depending on normalization to repair decorative text.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep real mathematical notation meaningful
In mathematics, a letter’s style can distinguish one variable or concept from another. Do not flatten those distinctions simply to make the equation sound more familiar to a screen reader. On a web page, use MathML rather than presenting an equation as a string of decorative-looking characters. MathML can represent an expression’s structure and meaning and support navigation through its parts. See Section 508’s guidance on equations and formulas for web and document-authoring considerations.
Correct character encoding alone does not ensure that a screen reader will speak an expression as intended. Section 508 gives an NVDA example in which 2+6=8 is read as “2 plus 6 equals 8,” while (2+6)² is read as “2 plus 6 2,” rather than “parenthesis 2 plus 6 parenthesis squared.” This is an example, not a prediction of how every screen reader will behave.

For Word documents or other non-web formats, use the format’s equation and accessibility features, then test the exported file. Section 508 cautions that Word equations and even simple expressions assembled from Unicode characters may not be read as intended. MathML and other semantic authoring approaches still need to be checked in the browser and assistive-technology combination your audience uses.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the result, not just the appearance
- Inspect the actual characters. Verify that decorative prose contains ordinary letters rather than mathematical script code points.
- Test a relevant browser and screen reader together. Include mobile assistive technology if mobile access is part of the use case.
- Check practical tasks. Confirm that links and controls announce meaningful words, copied text remains readable, and equations retain their structure and distinctions.
- Record the setup. Note the browser, screen reader, and versions you tested; speech output can differ across implementations.
W3C/WAI’s supplemental guidance on clear, unambiguous formatting and punctuation notes that formatting and punctuation can lead text-to-speech to read text incorrectly, and recommends avoiding unfamiliar symbols where possible. It is guidance, not a WCAG success criterion, and it does not establish one universal pronunciation for Unicode cursive text.
