You can use heat to shrink decorated plastic into small charms, but the documented process is shrink-plastic craft—not a fold-first origami technique. Draw and cut the design, punch any hanging hole, then heat the plastic according to its instructions until it curls and flattens.
What this heat-powered craft actually does
Shrink plastic starts out as a thin sheet. When heated, it contracts across its surface and becomes thicker. The Chicago Section of the American Chemical Society explains that manufacturing involves heating, rolling, and rapidly cooling polystyrene; reheating lets the material contract in area. Its 2021 activity estimates a finished piece may be about one-third of its original size, but that is an instructional estimate, not a guaranteed result for every material.

The available instructions describe decorating, cutting, and heating plastic. They do not demonstrate folding it into origami before heating, so the phrase “origami powered by heat” should not be taken as a verified folding method.

Gather supplies and choose the plastic
- Shrink-plastic craft sheets, or repurposed plastic clearly marked with the recycling code #6.
- Permanent markers suitable for the material.
- Scissors and a hole punch if you are making a hanging charm.
- A cooking sheet lined with foil or another surface specified by the material’s instructions.
- An oven or toaster oven, oven mitt, and spatula.
- Yarn or other hanging material to attach after the charm has cooled.
Purpose-made shrink sheets are intended for this kind of project; their surface preparation and heating directions depend on the product. Repurposed plastic is a less predictable option: first confirm that it is marked #6, and follow the applicable activity or material instructions rather than assuming all plastic packaging behaves alike. The Maryland Science Center and Chicago ACS both identify #6 polystyrene as an option.

Make a charm, step by step
- Prepare the work area. Work in a well-ventilated area. For oven use, have an adult supervise, and keep an oven mitt and spatula ready.
- Decorate the plastic. Draw your design on the sheet with permanent markers, following any surface-preparation directions supplied with the material.
- Cut out the shape. Leave enough room around the design for the outline you want. Remember that the shape will shrink as it heats.
- Punch the hanging hole now. Make it before heating, while the plastic is still easy to work with. The finished plastic will be smaller and harder to punch.
- Heat according to the material’s instructions. Place the piece on the prepared cooking sheet and use the specified temperature and timing. Do not treat one temperature or duration as universal for every sheet or piece of repurposed plastic.
- Watch for the endpoint. The plastic may curl or crinkle at first. Continue heating as directed; the cited instructions describe it flattening as the shrinking completes.
- Remove and cool. Take the tray out with an oven mitt. Let the piece cool to room temperature before touching it.
- Add the hanging material. Once cool, thread yarn or attach the chosen hanging material through the pre-punched hole.
What to expect while heating
Initial curling is part of the described process, not by itself a signal that the piece is finished. The cited instructions say the plastic should flatten with continued heating. Use the directions for your specific material to decide how long to heat it; neither source establishes a single setting that applies to every product or repurposed plastic.
Size reduction also varies with the material and process. Chicago ACS gives “about one-third” as an estimate for its 2021 activity, rather than a formal test result or a promise that each charm will reach exactly that fraction.

- Ventilate the work area and have an adult supervise oven use.
