To make short-form video content, build each clip around one useful idea, open with the point that will make someone stop scrolling, film vertically, add readable captions, and trim everything that does not help deliver the idea. A smartphone is enough to start. You can record in a platform’s app or edit a video on your phone, then publish and learn from how viewers respond.
1. Decide what the viewer should get from the video
Before filming, write one sentence stating what a specific viewer should understand, see, or do. A short video works best when it delivers one clear message quickly; it is not a miniature version of an entire article or course. For example, instead of “how to care for houseplants,” focus on “how to tell whether this plant needs water.” The Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center and the American Institutes for Research describe short-form video as a way to share a single message quickly and reach new audiences.

2. Pick a format that suits the message
Choose a format you can make clearly with the time and equipment available. A trend is optional; use one only when it fits the point and the intended viewer.

- Talking head: Speak directly to the camera to explain one tip or answer one question.
- Text over b-roll: Put the explanation in concise on-screen text while showing relevant footage.
- Demonstration or tutorial: Show the steps as they happen, keeping the action easy to see.
- Behind the scenes: Show a preparation, process, or moment that gives viewers a useful or entertaining look behind the finished result.
- Repurposed excerpt: Turn one self-contained moment from a webinar or longer video into a clip that makes sense on its own.
- Entertainment: Use a skit, challenge, or musical idea when it serves the audience and message.
3. Write a hook and a simple sequence
Start with the most useful, surprising, or intriguing part: a question, a concise claim, the promised outcome, or the beginning of a demonstration. The MSKTC/AIR presentation recommends placing a hook in the first one to three seconds and avoiding a long logo intro. Then arrange the rest in a simple order: make the point, show or explain it, and stop once the promised takeaway is delivered.
That presentation describes 30–60 seconds as a suggested “sweet spot” and 30 seconds to two minutes as an ideal range. Treat that as editorial guidance, not a platform limit or a formula for performance. Give the idea enough time to make sense; do not stretch it merely to hit a target.
4. Film for a phone screen
Frame vertically and keep the important action clear
For YouTube Shorts, YouTube’s April 8, 2025 guide recommends vertical 9:16 filming. The MSKTC/AIR presentation also recommends vertical framing for Shorts, Reels, and TikTok-style video. Keep faces, demonstrations, and essential text away from the frame edges and from areas where platform controls may cover them. If you plan to post the same clip on multiple services, check each service’s current safe-area guidance rather than assuming its interface matches another’s.

Use the phone you have
YouTube’s April 2025 guide calls a smartphone the primary tool and presents a tripod and ring light as optional extras. A stable phone and light that lets viewers see the subject can help, but a dedicated camera, studio, lighting kit, or paid editor is not a prerequisite. Prioritize clear framing and intelligible speech or text.
Record in the Shorts camera or upload a finished clip
You can record directly in YouTube’s Shorts camera or upload an existing vertical video. YouTube Help says Shorts can be up to three minutes long and the maximum upload resolution is 1080p. In the Shorts camera, creators can record segments, undo or redo the last segment, and add music, filters, effects, text-to-speech, or other effects. Check the current Help page for the latest controls and eligibility details.
5. Make the video work without sound
Add accurate captions or concise on-screen text so the central idea remains understandable when a viewer watches silently. Keep the text readable on a small screen, give each caption enough time to be read, and place it where it will not hide a face or important action. The MSKTC/AIR presentation emphasizes captions for silent viewing and identifies poor sizing or placement of overlays as a common pitfall.

If you add music, use audio you are allowed to use on the platform where you publish. Permission to use a track in one service’s tools does not by itself establish that you can reuse it on another service; check each platform’s current audio guidance before cross-posting.

Trim pauses, repeated phrases, and footage that does not advance the point. Keep visual changes purposeful: a cut should clarify the explanation, reveal a step, or maintain attention without making the action harder to follow. Watch the edit on a phone and check that the opening, captions, and key action remain visible.
YouTube’s native Shorts editor offers basic trimming, speed controls, and text. The MSKTC/AIR presentation recommends platform-native recorders and editors as a simple workflow and names Canva, Descript for captions, and CapCut as editing examples. Availability and features can vary; confirm that any app you choose is appropriate for your needs and current device.

7. Publish with accurate details
In YouTube’s publishing flow, add a title and set privacy, audience, and other details. YouTube Help states that a Shorts title can be up to 100 characters. Select the made-for-kids audience designation accurately. YouTube says Shorts may appear in the Shorts feed, search, homepage, channel homepage, subscriptions, and notifications; those placements are possibilities, not a promise of reach.
Use a clear title and relevant description or hashtags where they help viewers understand the clip. YouTube’s creator guide recommends regular posting and viewer interaction, but consistency should be sustainable: choose a schedule you can maintain rather than sacrificing clarity or accuracy to post more often.

Review the metrics available on the platform where you publish. The MSKTC/AIR presentation suggests considering watch time, completion rate, saves, and shares; YouTube also provides Shorts performance in Analytics. Compare similar videos and, when practical, change one creative element at a time—such as the opening, caption style, or demonstration—so you can better understand what may have helped. Success is not the same thing as going viral.

YouTube changed its Shorts view metric starting March 31, 2025: views count starts and replays without a minimum watch time. The previous metric is called “Engaged views.” YouTube says YPP eligibility and Shorts ad revenue sharing continue to be based on engaged Shorts views. Because metric definitions and monetization requirements can change, consult YouTube’s current Help documentation when interpreting a dashboard or planning for eligibility.
Common problems and fixes
- The opening takes too long: Remove the greeting or logo animation and lead with the question, result, or demonstration.
- The clip feels crowded: Keep only the one point that supports the viewer outcome; move other points into separate videos.
- Captions are hard to read: Shorten them, increase legibility, and move them away from edges, interface controls, faces, and the main action.
- The subject is difficult to see: Reframe vertically, stabilize the phone if possible, and improve the available light before adding more equipment.
- A cross-posted track may not be cleared: Check the destination platform’s current audio rules or replace the music with audio you are permitted to use there.
- Views are not comparable across dates: Account for YouTube’s March 31, 2025 change to Shorts views and distinguish the current view count from “Engaged views.”
