Choose your Minecraft edition before copying a command
Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition both provide /say, /tellraw, and title commands, but they parse message data differently. A command that works on Bedrock can fail on Java, and Java’s text-component syntax has changed across versions.

- Bedrock Edition:
/tellrawexpects a JSON object containing arawtextarray. - Java Edition: the accepted text-component form depends on the game version. Mojang’s Java snapshot 25w02a documentation changed commands such as
/tellrawand/titlefrom JSON-wrapped strings to inline SNBT-style data.
If you are unsure, check the title screen or launcher profile, then type /help in the same world or server. Use the syntax shown by that build rather than assuming an example written for another edition.
Broadcast a simple message with /say
/say is the quickest way to put a plain announcement in everyone’s chat. Microsoft Learn defines the Bedrock form as /say <message: message> and describes it as sending a message in chat to other players.

Bedrock Edition
Enter:
/say Server restart in 10 minutes
The message appears as a chat broadcast rather than as a private whisper. This is the best choice when the wording matters more than visual styling and you want the shortest command to remember.
Java Edition
Use the same basic form:
/say Server restart in 10 minutes
Java may display a sender-style prefix as part of the broadcast presentation. If you need a cleaner line, a target selector, or structured text, use /tellraw instead.
When /say is the right tool
- A moderator needs to send a one-off notice quickly.
- The announcement is ordinary text with no title, subtitle, or structured component.
- You want a command that is easy to place in a command block or run from a console.
/say does not give you a target argument in the way /tellraw does. For a selected group rather than the whole server, choose a command with an explicit target.
Use /tellraw for targeted or structured broadcasts
Microsoft Learn describes /tellraw as sending a JSON message to players. It takes a target followed by a raw message, so it is the flexible option when you need a selector-defined audience or message data that is more structured than plain text.
Bedrock Edition syntax
Bedrock uses:
/tellraw <target> <raw json message>
To send a clean broadcast to every player, use:
/tellraw @a {"rawtext":[{"text":"Server restart in 10 minutes"}]}
Here, @a is the all-players selector and the rawtext array contains the text component. Keep the quotation marks, braces, brackets, and colon exactly where shown. A missing quote or bracket causes a parsing error instead of a message.

Java Edition syntax before the 25w02a text-component change
Older Java builds commonly used a JSON-wrapped text component such as:
/tellraw @a {"text":"Server restart in 10 minutes"}
This is a version-qualified example, not a universal Java command. It is appropriate only when the target build still accepts the older JSON form.

Java Edition syntax in builds using the newer inline SNBT-style form
Java documentation for snapshot 25w02a describes the newer style. A plain broadcast can be written as:
/tellraw @a {text:'Server restart in 10 minutes'}
The important change is that the text component is written inline in the command’s SNBT-style data rather than as the older JSON-wrapped string. Your released version may differ from the snapshot, so confirm the accepted form with /help tellraw and test it in a safe location.
Why choose /tellraw instead of /say?

Understand selectors before changing @a
The target in a /tellraw command determines who receives the message. The common @a selector means all players, which makes it suitable for a server-wide announcement:
/tellraw @a {"rawtext":[{"text":"Welcome to the event area"}]}
To address a smaller audience, replace @a with a selector expression valid in your edition and version. The exact filters and syntax are edition-dependent, so use your in-game command help rather than pasting a Java selector into Bedrock or vice versa. Test the narrowed target with a harmless message before using it for an important notice.

- A selector-defined group: replace the target with the group expression your build accepts.
- One player: use that player’s name or a selector that resolves to one player, then verify the result privately.
A selector problem can look like a formatting problem: the command may parse correctly but reach nobody because the target matches no one. Check the target separately when troubleshooting.
Put an urgent notice in the center of the screen
Chat is easy to miss during combat, building, or exploration. The title command family displays a prominent message over the game view. The precise form differs between editions, and Bedrock distinguishes /title from /titleraw.
Bedrock /title
Use the title command when a straightforward title message is sufficient. The command targets players, selects a display mode such as title, and then supplies the text. A basic pattern is:
/title @a title Server restart in 10 minutes
Use the exact argument order shown by /help title in your Bedrock build. The title, subtitle, actionbar, clear, and reset modes are separate operations; sending a title does not automatically perform every other mode.

Bedrock /titleraw
Bedrock’s official command overview separates /titleraw from /title for raw JSON text. A raw title can be sent with:
/titleraw @a title {"rawtext":[{"text":"Server restart in 10 minutes"}]}
Choose this form when you need JSON-defined text or a translated component. The rawtext object must be valid Bedrock JSON; do not substitute Java’s component syntax.

Java uses a target, a title mode, and a text component. Older builds commonly accept:

Java builds following the text-component change documented for snapshot 25w02a use the inline SNBT-style form instead:

Because Java command parsing is version-sensitive, treat these as edition-and-version examples. If one produces an argument error, run /help title and follow the syntax exposed by the actual server.

Minecraft’s official command guide identifies several execution contexts. You can enter commands in chat, place them in command blocks, run them through data packs or behavior packs, or issue them from a server console.

In-game chat
Chat is best for a one-time announcement. Type the command with its leading slash, submit it, and watch for both the output and any error text. If the command is rejected, keep the error visible while checking the edition and syntax rather than repeatedly sending the same malformed command.
Command blocks
A command block stores an announcement so an operator can trigger it through a button, lever, redstone circuit, or configured automatic mode. Enter the complete command, select the block behavior you need, and test it with a small audience before connecting it to a public trigger.
A repeating command block is useful for recurring notices, but an unrestricted repeating block can send the same message continuously. Add an intentional trigger, delay, or state check appropriate to your setup. Chain blocks can separate a notice from the other actions that accompany an event, making the system easier to disable.
Java data packs and Bedrock behavior packs
A function can keep several announcements in files instead of burying them in a row of command blocks. Put the edition-appropriate command in the function or behavior-pack file, then invoke it through the scheduling mechanism supported by that edition. Keep Java and Bedrock files separate; their text-component formats are not interchangeable.
Server console
A server console is useful for maintenance messages when no operator is in the game. The console can issue commands directly, and an external scheduler can run a command at a planned time. Console panels differ in whether they expect a leading slash, so follow the panel’s command-entry convention and test with a harmless message first.
Check permissions before diagnosing the command
Minecraft’s official command guide states: “In multiplayer, you’ll need to have a high-enough permission level to be able to use commands.” Owners of their own server or Realm generally have the permissions needed, but ordinary players may not.
- Confirm that the account running the command has permission to use commands.
- For a command block, confirm that the world or server allows command blocks and that the block is receiving power or is set to the intended automatic mode.
- For a console scheduler, confirm that the panel account can execute commands and that the server is online when the task runs.
- On a Realm or hosted server, check the operator or permission settings rather than assuming every player can broadcast.
Permission failures usually produce an explicit denial or an absence of command output. Do not grant broad operator access merely to let someone send announcements; give the smallest role that satisfies your moderation workflow.
Build a reliable recurring-announcement workflow
Recurring notices are more than a command choice. Decide who should see each notice, where it will run, and how it will be disabled during maintenance or events.
- Write the message and choose the presentation. Use
/sayfor a simple chat line,/tellrawfor a selected audience or structured text, and a title command when missing the notice would have an immediate consequence. - Choose the execution context. Use chat for an isolated message, a command block for an in-world trigger, a function or behavior pack for a maintained set of commands, and the console for staff-run or externally scheduled notices.
- Set the audience explicitly. Start with
@aonly when everyone should receive the message. Otherwise, use a selector or player target validated by your edition’s help output. - Test privately. Run the command with a narrow target or in a test world. Confirm spelling, punctuation, line breaks, and the visual location of the output.
- Automate conservatively. A repeating block, scheduled function, or console task should have a clear interval or trigger and an obvious off switch. Avoid enabling an automatic broadcast until you know exactly how to stop it.
- Record the edition and version. Store the working command beside the automation configuration. This prevents a future Java text-component change or a Bedrock syntax edit from being mistaken for a server outage.
Common failures and precise fixes
“Unknown command” or an unavailable subcommand
Check that the command is enabled in the current world or server and that your account has sufficient permission. Then run /help or the command-specific help entry. If the command exists in one edition but not the other, switch to the edition-appropriate alternative rather than adding random punctuation.
Bedrock reports invalid JSON for /tellraw or /titleraw
Bedrock expects a JSON object with a rawtext array. Compare the command character by character with this structure:

Check every quote, brace, bracket, comma, and colon. Keep the message itself inside the text value and do not paste Java’s {text:'...'} form into Bedrock.
Java rejects a command that worked previously
Check the Java version first. The change documented for snapshot 25w02a affects text components used by commands including /tellraw and /title. A parser error may mean the server now expects inline SNBT-style data instead of the older JSON-wrapped form, or the reverse if you moved to an older release. Use /help tellraw or /help title in that exact server build.
The command runs, but nobody sees the announcement
Inspect the target. A selector that matches no players produces no visible broadcast even when the message syntax is valid. Also check that the intended players are connected, that the command block is active, and that a console scheduler actually reached the running server.
Only one player receives a supposedly global notice
Look for an accidental single-player name or narrow selector in place of @a. Test the all-player form in a controlled session, then restore the narrower target if the announcement is not meant for everyone.

Verify that you used the title mode required by the command, that the target selector resolves to the intended players, and that you used /titleraw when Bedrock rawtext is required. A valid chat command does not prove that the title command’s syntax is valid for the same edition.
The server is flooded with duplicates
Inspect every automation source: repeating command blocks, chained blocks, functions, behavior packs, and external console tasks. Disable all but one while testing, then restore the intended trigger and interval. Keep a manual off switch for maintenance.
Announcement design choices that prevent confusion
- State the action and deadline: “Server restart in 10 minutes” is more useful than “Important notice.”
- Use one channel for routine notices: keep regular reminders in chat and reserve center-screen titles for urgent or time-critical information.
- Keep titles short: a title is prominent but occupies limited screen space; put details in a follow-up chat message if necessary.
- Make the target intentional: server-wide maintenance belongs to
@a, while an event-area instruction should use a narrower selector. - Keep a tested fallback: if a raw or styled command fails after an update, use the plain
/sayform while you correct the version-specific syntax.
Copy-and-test checklist
- Identify Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.
- Note the exact game or server version, especially for Java text components.
- Confirm command permission for the account, command block, pack, or console task that will run it.
- Start with
/sayif a plain all-player chat message is enough. - Use
/tellraw @awhen you need a target and structured message data. - Use
/titleor Bedrock/titlerawfor a center-screen alert. - Replace
@aonly after testing the narrower selector in the same edition. - Run the command once before enabling a repeating block, function schedule, behavior-pack task, or console scheduler.
- Keep an off switch and a plain-chat fallback for future updates.
The safest process is simple: select the edition first, choose the least complicated command that meets the communication need, test it in the exact server version, and automate only after the one-time command works.
