For a first layer that sticks without risking the nozzle or build plate, start with the exact printer, filament, and plate you have: clean and seat the plate as its maker directs, select the matching plate and material profiles, and run the printer’s own first-layer calibration. Judge the test pattern by its shape—not by a Z-offset copied from another machine. The target is an even, continuous line that is slightly flattened, not a round strand or a nearly transparent smear.
Why won’t my first layer stick to the bed?
Adhesion problems do not always mean the nozzle is too far from the bed. A greasy or dirty surface, a mismatched plate profile, uneven leveling, unsuitable print settings, inconsistent extrusion, a worn or obstructed nozzle, or a model with too little contact area can all contribute. If the calibration pattern looks right, investigate those causes rather than continuing to lower the nozzle.

Start by noting the printer model, filament type, build-plate surface or coating, and plate selection in the slicer. Use the printer’s current manual and the filament’s recommended profile: a surface or setting that works for one combination may not suit another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesClean and install the plate before changing Z offset
Remove debris and check that the plate is flat, undamaged, and seated correctly. Clean it only with a method compatible with its coating. Different manufacturers and surfaces have different care instructions; do not assume one solvent is safe for every plate or filament. Prusa’s general troubleshooting guidance says to keep the surface free of grease, but its article also distinguishes materials—for example, it makes an exception to its IPA advice for PETG. Prusa’s general troubleshooting article is not a universal cleaning specification.

For the Bambu Lab H2C, the manual’s plate guidance specifies warm water and neutral detergent. It also says to match the physical plate to the filament and select the correct build plate in Bambu Studio. Those instructions apply to that model and should not be treated as a procedure for other printers. Read the Bambu Lab H2C manual, Chapter 9, and follow the instructions for your own printer and surface.
Run the printer’s calibration routine and read the test line
Use the calibration steps for your exact model, and re-run them when the manufacturer recommends it—for example, after relevant nozzle or extruder changes or moving the printer. The specific controls and routines differ by model, so do not assume a menu path or procedure carries over between brands.
On Prusa MINI/MINI+ and i3 printers, calibration uses a printed line or pattern while nozzle-to-bed distance is adjusted. Prusa’s stated target for MINI/MINI+ is filament that sticks and looks slightly squished. The correct Z height is machine-specific and can change with use; visual inspection is more useful than another printer’s saved number. The i3 routine uses a zig-zag pattern. For both, a good test surface should be even and continuous, without gaps or ridges.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Gaps or round, unflattened strands: the nozzle may be too far from the surface. Make a small correction using the printer’s procedure, then inspect the pattern again.
- Evenly flattened lines with no gaps or ridges: the nozzle height is likely in a workable range. If a later print still lifts, check other causes rather than lowering it further.
- Ridges, lines spread extremely thin, or a transparent-looking extrusion: the nozzle may be too close. Raise it in small steps and inspect another test pattern.
Too little clearance is not just a cosmetic issue. Bambu Lab warns that an excessively low first layer can cause print failure or damage the nozzle or build plate. Avoid large adjustments; observe the test as it prints and stop if the nozzle appears to scrape the surface.

On Prusa MINI/MINI+ and i3 printers, separate sheet types may require separate first-layer calibration values; Prusa specifically cautions against reusing the same calibration when switching between smooth and textured sheets. Treat that as Prusa-specific guidance, and follow the profile and calibration options available on your own machine. See Prusa’s MINI/MINI+ calibration guide and Prusa’s i3 calibration guide.
How do I adjust the Z offset?
Use the live Z adjustment or calibration control documented for your printer; there is no universal offset number or universal menu path. Change it only while observing the manufacturer’s test pattern, in small increments. If the lines are round and separated, move toward slightly less distance; if they are crushed, ridged, or spread paper-thin, move toward more distance. Recheck the whole pattern after each adjustment rather than optimizing one isolated spot.
If the printer uses different plate profiles, select the right one before calibration. Prusa documents different first-layer settings for some of its sheet surfaces, but that does not mean every printer supports the same system. For the H2C, use its own manual’s auto- or high-temperature bed-leveling instructions as applicable, and check first-layer height if adhesion or surface quality is poor.
If the calibration looks right but the print still lifts
Work through other likely causes before changing Z again. Prusa’s i3 guidance specifically redirects persistent adhesion trouble after a good calibration toward sheet cleanliness, print settings, leveling or XYZ calibration, and under-extrusion. Prusa’s broader first-layer troubleshooting page also includes model-specific mechanical checks. Consult the Prusa first-layer issues guide for the relevant model, rather than applying its hardware checks indiscriminately.

- Plate or profile: confirm the surface is clean, properly seated, undamaged, and correctly selected in the slicer.
- Leveling or flatness: use the printer’s leveling routine if the pattern varies across the plate or the manual recommends recalibration.
- Settings: confirm that the filament and plate profiles are appropriate and that temperatures follow the material and printer guidance.
- Extrusion and nozzle: if the line is inconsistent even with a sound height, inspect extrusion consistency and nozzle condition using the maker’s instructions.
- Model footprint: a small contact area or narrow corners may lift even when a broad calibration pattern adheres.
When to change speed, temperature, or adhesion aids
First confirm the correct filament and plate profiles and use their recommended temperatures. If calibration, cleaning, and profile checks do not resolve the problem, change one setting at a time and verify the result with a test print. Prusa’s general troubleshooting article offers example experiments: increase bed temperature by 5–10 °C for experimental material, or reduce speed to about 75% for the first three layers if earlier checks have failed. These are suggestions from that article, not universal settings; the printer’s current guidance and the filament profile take priority.
If a part has a small footprint, a brim can add contact area around its base. Use glue or another adhesion aid only if the printer, plate, or material instructions recommend it. Prusa discusses a separating agent for PETG, while the H2C manual says glue may be applied if needed. Neither makes glue a replacement for a clean surface or correct calibration.
When to stop and follow model-specific support steps
Stop adjusting if the nozzle is scraping, the test line becomes extremely thin, or the plate appears at risk. For persistent issues that point to nozzle seating, alignment, or another mechanical problem, use the support instructions for the exact model. Power down and allow the machine to cool before any procedure that requires it; do not apply another printer’s disassembly or adjustment steps by analogy.
