Make the current Reddit feed more compact
Compact view is the simplest in-product adjustment if your main complaint is that posts take up too much space. Reddit’s July 2025 changelog confirms Compact View and notes that users can collapse or expand content with the X key: Reddit’s July 2025 changelog.
- Open your profile menu.
- Choose Settings, then Preferences.
- Find Default Feed View and choose Compact, if the option is available.
This route and its labels are community-reported and may change: Reddit Help community discussion. Compact view makes the feed denser; it does not turn the current site into the old design.
Use the classic desktop site
To see Reddit’s legacy desktop layout, go to old.reddit.com. Reddit’s help documentation identifies that address as a route to the old desktop experience and gives old.reddit.com/r/all as an example: Reddit Help: Why is the design of Reddit different?

Old Reddit is a distinct interface, not a preference that restyles the current site. Reddit announced planned changes involving the legacy desktop experience in August 2026, so check whether the route still works when you use this guide: Reddit’s August 2026 announcement.

Consider extensions only if the built-in options are not enough
Some third-party projects advertise a broader old-style restyling than Compact view. For example, the Classic Layout for Reddit project describes a rebuilt old-style layout and notes a logged-out access limitation following a 2026 Reddit JSON API change. That is the project’s stated behavior, not a guarantee of current or future compatibility. A Safari App Store listing also advertises Yesterday For Old Reddit.

Before installing any extension, check who publishes it, whether it currently supports your browser, what permissions it requests, and whether it still works with Reddit. Extensions are independent tools, not Reddit settings.
Community styling does not change your personal Reddit layout
Reddit’s community-appearance tools are for moderators styling a subreddit, including its old-Reddit stylesheet. They do not switch an individual account’s overall interface: Reddit Help: Community appearance.

Know what changes between the interfaces
The current desktop interface supports keyboard shortcuts that can be enabled or disabled in preferences; Reddit says those shortcuts are not available on Old Reddit. See Reddit Help: How do I use keyboard shortcuts?. If you rely on a current-interface feature, try the classic route and confirm that the feature you need is there before making it your default way to browse.
