For a one-off capture, pass waitUntil: 'networkidle' to page.goto(), then take the screenshot. Playwright defines this state as at least 500 ms without network connections. It is a network-quiet signal, not proof that an application has finished rendering or that its important content is ready—and Playwright discourages using it as a test-readiness condition.
Take a screenshot after navigation reaches network idle
Here is the basic TypeScript pattern for a standalone Playwright script. Replace the URL with the page you want to capture:

Wait for network idle after navigation has started
If navigation is already underway or has committed, wait for the load state separately:

Choose the wait condition that matches the screenshot
Use network idle for a convenient capture gate
Network idle can suit a script when a brief period without active connections is an adequate signal to proceed. It only describes network activity. A page can still be working after requests stop, and a page with ongoing background requests may never reach the state in the time available. The API warning is explicit: “Don’t use this method for testing, rely on web assertions to assess readiness instead.”

Use a locator assertion when content readiness matters
For a test, wait for the visible content the image is supposed to show. Choose a locator that reflects the target application’s expected state; there is no universal selector for an unspecified page.

Use a screenshot assertion for visual regression tests
When the goal is to compare a rendered page with an expected image in Playwright Test, use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). Playwright waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the last capture with the expectation. That is a pixel-stability check, rather than an assumption that network silence equals readiness.

The screenshot assertion documentation describes animation handling and options such as a stylesheet to filter volatile elements; these can improve repeatability but cannot eliminate every source of variation. Handle pages that do not reach network idle
If goto(..., { waitUntil: 'networkidle' }) times out, inspect whether the page keeps network connections active. Analytics, polling, streaming, and other ongoing requests can prevent a quiet interval. Rather than raising the timeout blindly, decide what the screenshot needs to contain and wait for that specific visible state, or use a visual assertion if pixel stability is the goal.

Wait for a visible result or other app-specific condition.
- The network-idle wait times out: ongoing requests may keep the page active. Prefer a meaningful locator or event over waiting for all network activity to stop.
- The image differs between runs: inspect animations and dynamic regions. Use the screenshot assertion’s animation handling or a stylesheet for volatile content where appropriate.
- A fixed delay seems to solve it: avoid relying on that in production tests. Playwright says
page.waitForTimeout()should be used only for debugging; time-based waits are inherently flaky.
Set timeouts deliberately
Navigation and screenshot calls support timeout settings, and Playwright also provides page- and browser-context-level ways to change defaults. There is no universally correct timeout: it depends on the application, infrastructure, and expected content. Set a value based on the behavior you expect, then use the timeout failure to investigate a stuck request or an incorrect readiness signal rather than treating a longer wait as proof of readiness. The available options are documented in the Page API and BrowserContext API.
