How to Make Pixel Art in Excel Using Cell Formatting

Use a worksheet grid as a low-resolution canvas: adjust row and column sizes, then color cells with Excel's Fill Color feature.

You can make a simple pixel-art image in Excel by treating worksheet cells as pixels: size a rectangular area into a tidy grid, then color cells with Home > Fill Color. Each cell can represent one pixel, while a small group of cells can form a larger block in the design.

Set up the worksheet as a canvas

  1. Open a blank worksheet. Choose a compact rectangular area for the image; starting small makes the design easier to plan and revise.
  2. Make the canvas grid consistent. Select the columns in the canvas and set a common width, then select its rows and set a common height. In Excel Normal view, column width is based on characters of the default font that fit in a cell, while row height is measured in points. Microsoft explains this distinction in its column width and row height guidance.
  3. Adjust the proportions by eye. Because the width and height use different units, there is no single numeric pair that guarantees square-looking cells across fonts, display scaling, Excel versions, and platforms. Resize until the grid looks close to square at the view size you intend to use.

Excel’s documented sizing limits are interface bounds, not recommended artwork settings: column width ranges from 0 (hidden) to 255, with a default of 8.43; row height ranges from 0 (hidden) to 409 points, with a default of 15.00. Microsoft does not prescribe a pixel-art cell size.

Plan the image and color the cells

  1. Sketch the image as a grid. Decide which cells make up each shape or color region before filling them. A simple icon, heart, flower, or letter is easier to translate into cells than a detailed picture.
  2. Select one cell or a range. Use a range for contiguous areas that share a color, and individual cells for edges and details.
  3. Apply a solid fill. On the ribbon, choose Home > Fill Color and select a color. Excel supports theme, standard, and custom colors for selected cells; see Microsoft’s fill color instructions. A small, consistent palette helps the artwork read clearly.
  4. Continue region by region. Fill the larger areas first, then add contrasting cells for outlines and small details. If a color is wrong, select the affected cells and apply a different fill.

Solid fills are the dependable choice for this technique. Microsoft notes that pattern fill effects are unavailable in Excel for the web, and patterns applied in desktop Excel do not appear in the browser.

Choose whether to use gridlines or borders

Gridlines can help you see the cell boundaries while working, but they do not have to be hidden. Keep them if the grid contributes to the pixel look; if they distract from the finished image, turn them off or use borders selectively. These are visual choices rather than requirements for coloring cells.

Use conditional formatting for value-driven art

For a fixed picture, direct Fill Color is the simplest method. If the image should change color as cell values or formulas change—for example, a color-by-number grid—use Conditional Formatting instead. Microsoft documents formula-based rules and fill formatting in its conditional formatting guide.

  1. Set up the cell values or formulas that represent the colors or conditions.
  2. Select the canvas cells and create a conditional-formatting rule for the condition you want.
  3. Choose the rule’s fill format, then check that the displayed colors match the intended design.

Conditional formatting takes additional rule setup, but it can recolor the artwork when the underlying values change. For rules that use formulas, make sure the formula is written for the selected range and refers to the intended cells.

Check the result on screen or in print

Review the canvas at the size where it will be viewed or printed. If printing, check the print preview and color settings: Microsoft’s fill-color guidance warns that black-and-white or draft print settings can prevent cell fills from printing in color.

The sizing and fill-color documentation covers Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016; the conditional-formatting guidance also includes Excel for the web. Menu wording and layout can vary by version or platform, so use the feature names and Home tab as navigation anchors.
