How to Make Only One Page Landscape in Word [2024 Guide]

Making just one page landscape in Word is mostly about controlling where the document “section” changes. Word applies page orientation to an entire section, so the right section breaks are what keep the landscape formatting from spilling into the rest of your file.

This guide walks you through the exact clicks for Windows and macOS versions of Word (including Word 2024 / Microsoft 365). You’ll also get troubleshooting steps for the classic problems: headers/footers switching, the landscape page turning into multiple pages, and table layouts breaking.

Why you need a section break (and what goes wrong without it)

Word’s Layout → Orientation setting applies to the current section. If your document has a single section (common in newly created files), changing orientation affects every page.

To make only one page landscape, you need two section breaks: one to start the landscape section and another to end it. Everything before stays portrait, everything after returns to portrait.

Prerequisites and prerequisites checks

  • Know which page number you want in landscape (e.g., page 5).
  • Make sure you’re working in the right document view. The steps below assume you’re editing normally, not in Read Mode.
  • If you have headers/footers or page numbers, expect you may need to “unlink” them for that section.

Windows (Word for Microsoft 365 / Word 2024): make only one page landscape

On Windows, the most reliable method is using section breaks and then setting orientation for the middle section only.

Step-by-step

  1. Open your document in Word for Windows.

  2. Go to the page immediately before the page you want in landscape.

  3. Click at the end of the content on that page (near the bottom, after the last paragraph). If you’re not sure, click just after the last visible character before the page break.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Navigate to Layout → Breaks.

  5. Under Section Breaks, choose Next Page.

  6. Now you’re positioned at the start of the landscape page section.

  7. On the page you want landscape, go to Layout → Orientation → select Landscape.

  8. Go to the page immediately after your landscape page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  10. Go to Layout → Breaks → Next Page (again). This ends the landscape section.

  11. Finally, confirm the orientation on the portrait section: go to Layout → Orientation → Portrait. (Often Word keeps portrait automatically after the section break, but setting it explicitly avoids surprises.)

Quick verification checklist

  • Turn on formatting marks: press Ctrl + * (or Home → show/hide ¶). You should see two section breaks: one before and one after the landscape page.
  • Click inside the landscape page and re-check Layout → Orientation. It should show Landscape.
  • Click inside a page before and after. Those sections should show Portrait.

macOS (Word for Mac 2024 / Word for Microsoft 365): make only one page landscape

The logic is identical on macOS: insert section breaks to isolate a section, then set orientation only within that section.

Step-by-step

  1. Open the document in Word for Mac.

  2. Go to the page just before the one you want in landscape.

  8. Click at the start of that next page.

  9. Insert another Next Page section break (same menu path: Layout → Breaks → Section Breaks → Next Page).

  10. On the portrait portion, set Layout → Orientation → Portrait.

Quick verification checklist

  • Enable formatting marks (the ¶ button on the Home tab). You should see section breaks surrounding the landscape page.
  • Click inside the landscape page, then verify orientation reads Landscape.
  • Click a page before and after; both should show Portrait.

Alternative method: change orientation via the Page Setup dialog

If you prefer the classic dialog (or you want more control), you can use it to set orientation per section—just make sure the cursor is inside the correct section.

Step Windows / macOS navigation
Insert two Next Page section breaks (before and after the target page) Use the Breaks menu in Layout
Cursor inside the landscape page section Click on that page
Open Page Setup Windows: Layout → Page Setup (launcher) or right-click ruler → Page Setup. macOS: Layout → Page Setup
Set Orientation = Landscape Apply to this section (dialog applies to current section automatically)
On the portrait section, set Orientation = Portrait Repeat Page Setup for that section

This method is especially useful when documents have complex margin settings; you can confirm everything in the same dialog.

Headers, footers, and page numbers on the landscape page

When you split a document into multiple sections, headers and footers can either stay consistent across sections or change per section. Word usually defaults to “link” behavior, which may cause unexpected results on the landscape page.

Keep vs. unlink header/footer

  1. Double-click the header or footer area on the landscape page.

What to do when page numbers restart or shift

Page numbers often shift because Word treats page-number fields per section. If your page numbering must remain continuous, check the section’s page number settings.

  • On the landscape page section, right-click the page number → choose the page number options, then set continuation behavior to match your intent.
  • If you see “Page X of Y” changing only in one region, it’s usually because the page count is being calculated per section.

Tables, images, and margins that break only on the landscape page

Orientation changes can expose layout issues that were previously hidden in portrait. The most common culprits are fixed table widths, floating objects, and margin differences.

Common causes

  • Table width set to a fixed value (e.g., 6.5 in) that no longer fits the new margin box.
  • Margins differ per section because you also changed them (or used a template section with different settings).
  • Floating images/text boxes anchored to a paragraph that moved sections.

Fixes that usually work

  • Re-apply table layout: select the table on the landscape page → right-click → Table Properties → verify Preferred width and alignment.
  • Check section margins: click in the landscape page → open Layout → Margins → confirm values are correct for that section.
  • For images: select the image → ensure Wrap Text and anchor (position) settings make sense for that section.

Troubleshooting: the landscape change doesn’t stay on one page

If more than one page becomes landscape (or none does), it’s almost always because the section breaks aren’t positioned correctly.

Most common fixes

  • Section breaks are missing: you need two Next Page section breaks for a single-page landscape block.
  • Section breaks are inserted in the wrong location: place the first break at the end of the page before the landscape page, and the second at the start of the page after.
  • You inserted the wrong type: use Next Page. If you use Continuous by accident, multiple pages may share the same orientation.
  • Cursor isn’t inside the intended section: after inserting breaks, click directly inside the target page, then set orientation.

Edge cases to watch

  • Manual page breaks: if your document uses manual page breaks, your “page before” and “page after” may not match the visual assumption. Use formatting marks ¶ to find the true boundaries.
  • Wrapped text / paragraphs that push content: if the landscape page content grows, it may spill into the next page, effectively making two pages landscape. Fix by reducing content or adjusting spacing on the landscape section.
  • Different templates/styles: templates can store section-level defaults. If you cloned a section, orientation might revert when styles reapply.

Comparison: one-page landscape in Word vs. exporting to PDF

Some people avoid section breaks by creating a landscape-only page in another tool and then exporting to PDF. It can work, but it’s not always editable and can complicate page numbering.

  • Word section-break method: stays editable, supports headers/footers properly, and keeps page numbering consistent when configured per section.
  • PDF workaround: good for final production when you don’t need to edit the content inside Word, but it may disrupt searchable text, accessibility, and version control.

FAQs

Can I make only one page landscape without section breaks?

No. Word applies orientation per section. Without section breaks, the orientation change affects the whole document or at least the whole section.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my landscape page also change page numbers or headers?

Headers/footers and page number fields can be linked across sections. Turn Link to Previous off inside the landscape section if you need separate content.

My table is cut off on the landscape page. What should I check?

Confirm the table’s Table Properties width and the section’s margins. Fixed widths and mismatched margins are the top causes.

What if my document uses multiple columns or text boxes?

Section changes still work, but anchored floating objects (text boxes, images) may follow their anchor paragraph rather than the page you expected. Check the anchor and wrapping settings after you switch orientation.

How do I know the section breaks are correct?

Turn on ¶ marks and confirm you see one section break before the landscape page and another after it. Then click inside each page and verify orientation changes only in the landscape section.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom Line

To make only one page landscape in Word (Word 2024 and Microsoft 365), insert two Next Page section breaks—one before the target page and one after—then set Layout → Orientation to Landscape only within that section.

If headers, footers, page numbers, or tables don’t behave, it’s usually because that landscape section is still linked to the previous one or because margins/widths are section-specific. Check those settings after you confirm the section breaks are in the right place.
