To make one-handed texting easier, move your keyboard to one side of the screen. On Samsung Galaxy phones, Samsung Keyboard has a One-handed keyboard layout that does this. Android’s system One-handed mode is different: it brings upper-screen content within reach but does not change how you type. If your keyboard supports it, glide typing can also let you enter words by swiping across letters.
Choose the feature that matches what you want to do

These features do different jobs. A one-handed keyboard changes key placement; One-handed mode changes screen reach; glide typing changes how you enter words. There are no comparable official speed or accuracy measurements for these options, so the best choice depends on your phone, keyboard, language, and comfort.

Move a Samsung Galaxy keyboard to one side
Samsung’s built-in One-handed keyboard is the most direct documented example of a keyboard layout designed for one-thumb typing. The exact labels can vary with Galaxy model and operating system.

- Open Settings → General management → Samsung Keyboard settings → Mode.
- Choose One-handed keyboard. The keyboard shifts to the right.
- Tap the keyboard’s left-arrow control to move it to the left side instead.

Use Android One-handed mode to reach the top of the screen
Android’s system feature is useful when the hard-to-reach target is near the top of the display, such as an app control or notification. It does not shrink or reposition the keyboard for typing.
- Open Settings and search for One-handed mode.
- Turn on Use One-handed mode.
- Use the on-screen gesture described by your device to pull down the top half of the screen.
Google notes that some steps apply only to Android 12 and newer. Depending on the device, you may also be able to add One-handed mode to Quick Settings as an accessibility shortcut. If the setting is absent or the gesture differs, your Android version or manufacturer’s software may not match Google’s instructions; consult Google’s Android One-handed mode help.

Swipe across letters with Gboard
Gboard’s glide typing lets you slide a finger across the letters of a word and lift when you finish. Google describes the action as: “You can slide your finger from letter to letter to spell out words.” This is a typing method, not the same feature as Android One-handed mode or a one-sided keyboard layout.

- Open a text field where Gboard appears.
- Slide your finger from letter to letter to spell a word, then lift.
- If needed, look for Gboard settings through Settings → System → Languages & input → Virtual keyboard → Gboard. On customized Android versions, the path may differ.

Keep navigation swipes separate from typing gestures
Samsung’s One Hand Operation+ adds configurable swipes from the sides of the screen to trigger actions such as opening apps or settings. It is an optional navigation aid, not a shortcut for entering text. Samsung says handle placement and size can be adjusted for hand and thumb dimensions and case shape; its Galaxy Store listing also warns that gesture handles can interfere with touch input in some apps.
Samsung describes One Hand Operation+ for Galaxy smartphones and tablets, while its built-in One-handed mode instructions are for smartphones. Availability and behavior may vary. Details are in Samsung’s guide and the Galaxy Store listing.

If the setting or gesture is missing
- You cannot find One-handed mode: Search for it in Settings. Google says some steps require Android 12 or newer, and device makers can customize menus.
- You cannot find One-handed keyboard: Confirm that Samsung Keyboard is open, then check its Mode settings. Samsung notes that options vary by model and operating system.
- Glide typing does not work: Check whether your language is supported and whether Gboard is the active keyboard. Not all languages support the feature.
- A side swipe triggers the wrong action: If One Hand Operation+ is enabled, adjust or disable its handles; they can conflict with touch input in some apps.
