To make OBS retry a YouTube stream after a disconnect, open OBS → Settings → Advanced → Network, enable Automatic Reconnect, then choose a retry delay and maximum retry count. This reconnects OBS to the ingest server; it does not guarantee that YouTube will keep every broadcast live or resume it without an operator action. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls are separate.
Enable automatic reconnect in OBS
- In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced → Network.
- Enable Automatic Reconnect.
- Set the retry delay and maximum retry count. Choose values suited to the interruption you expect; there is no universally recommended setting established in the official documentation. Check YouTube’s broadcast controls separately
OBS reconnect and YouTube broadcast lifecycle settings control different parts of a stream. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings determine whether the encoder can start or stop the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live / Live Control Room, select the stream, and inspect those settings. YouTube says that when they are on, you can start or stop streaming from the encoder; reusing stream settings also copies these selections. Manage live stream settings
For a scheduled broadcast
Do not assume that OBS reconnect alone will resume a scheduled broadcast seamlessly. YouTube’s encoder workflow calls for the stream preview to appear in Live Control Room and then for the operator to click Go live. Test recovery before an event
- Run a test stream, using an unlisted stream or another suitable test setup.
- Confirm that YouTube receives the preview and that your broadcast settings behave as intended.
- Test the failure scenario you care about, such as a brief network interruption, and observe whether OBS retries and whether YouTube’s broadcast remains active.
- Monitor stream health during the test. YouTube recommends testing before a live stream and checking stream health. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
Why a stream may keep dropping
Automatic reconnect makes OBS retry; it does not repair a weak or unstable connection. OBS says intermittent disconnections and dropped frames point to a network problem between the computer and the remote ingest server. Its troubleshooting guidance includes examining bitrate, trying another server or service as a diagnostic, checking network configuration, and considering interference from security software, VPN software, or bundled network software. Common symptoms and fixes
- OBS does not retry: Recheck Settings → Advanced → Network → Automatic Reconnect, along with the retry settings, then test again.
- OBS retries but drops again: Treat repeated drops as a connection or ingest-path issue. Review bitrate and network configuration, and use OBS’s suggested diagnostics rather than assuming more retries will fix the cause.
- OBS reconnects but the YouTube broadcast does not resume as expected: Check the selected stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings and, for a scheduled stream, follow the Live Control Room preview and Go live workflow.
- Video quality contributes to instability: Test a quality level appropriate to available bandwidth and consult YouTube’s settings guidance for the specific resolution, frame rate, and codec. A lower bitrate may be a useful diagnostic, not a universal prescription.
