Make the gameplay transition a pure, tick-based function of an explicit starting state and an identically ordered set of commands. Keep presentation and environmental effects outside that transition, control time and randomness, and record enough data to replay the first divergent tick. Deterministic simulation helps clients predict server outcomes, but it does not replace server authority or validation.
What determinism means for a multiplayer reducer
A reducer is deterministic when equivalent inputs produce the same next gameplay state. For multiplayer, that means more than making one function predictable: the server and client need the same starting state, command sequence, tick boundaries, and compatible rules for representing and processing data.

A useful model is nextState = reduce(currentState, orderedCommands, deterministicContext). The reducer should not silently depend on wall-clock time, global mutable state, an uncontrolled random source, rendering state, or the order packets happen to arrive. If a value affects gameplay, make it an explicit input so it can be reproduced at the same simulation tick.

Keep authoritative gameplay transitions independent of rendering, audio, UI, and other effects that do not determine game rules. Rendering can interpolate between simulation states, and cosmetic smoothing can run at frame rate, but neither should change the authoritative result.

Likewise, variable render-frame timing must not decide how far the simulation advances. Give each simulation step a stable tick identity and apply gameplay commands at defined tick boundaries. The server and client should follow the same sequencing rules even when their frame rates and network conditions differ.
Make time, command order, and randomness explicit
Use tick-based time
Do not ask the system clock how much gameplay time has passed inside a reducer. Represent time through simulation ticks or an explicit deterministic context. If a rule depends on elapsed gameplay time, every participant must use the same tick-based value.
Define command sequencing
Network arrival order is not a safe gameplay order. Buffer and validate incoming commands, then apply them according to the game’s sequencing policy—such as player and tick identifiers—rather than whichever packet arrives first. The policy must resolve late, duplicate, or invalid commands consistently.

Control random outcomes
Use an explicit deterministic generator state and shared seed with the same draw order, or derive outcomes from stable identifiers and event indices. Include relevant random-generator state in snapshots and replay data. A random value that affects gameplay must be reproducible by every simulation that uses it.
Audit data, iteration, and numeric behavior
Equivalent commands can still produce different results if runtimes process data differently. Check the full transition path for assumptions about collection traversal, entity ordering, serialization, integer width, overflow, rounding, and comparisons. When mutation depends on iteration order, make that order stable.
Do not assume floating-point calculations, trigonometric functions, or general-purpose physics produce bit-identical results across platforms. If exact agreement is required, use deterministic math and physics libraries or constrain the simulation’s numeric domain. Keep visual interpolation and cosmetic effects outside that deterministic core.

Choose a synchronization model that fits the game
Determinism and server authority answer different questions. Determinism asks whether the same state and ordered inputs reproduce the same result. Authority asks which machine decides the accepted game state. A server can remain authoritative while clients run deterministic prediction locally. Epic’s Unreal Engine networking overview describes the server as authoritative and discusses selective replication and client simulation.
| Model | What is exchanged | Determinism burden | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deterministic lockstep | Ordered inputs or commands | Strong: participants must advance identically | Low state traffic, but input latency and coordination can constrain responsiveness |
| Snapshot interpolation | Complete or partial state snapshots | No requirement for fully identical simulation | Simulations are easier to decouple, but state traffic and interpolation matter |
| State synchronization | Inputs plus snapshots or state | Partial determinism can help; exact agreement is not required as it is in pure lockstep | Combines simulation and correction mechanisms, increasing implementation work |
| Prediction and rollback | Inputs plus rollback and correction behavior, commonly coordinated by a server component | Determinism enables reliable replay | Responsive local play adds state history, rollback, and correction complexity |
A 2023 thesis comparing synchronization methods characterizes lockstep as low in network traffic because participants share inputs, while noting the implementation burden of deterministic behavior. It describes snapshot interpolation as transmitting full or partial state and state synchronization as combining inputs with snapshots. Its comparison is useful for understanding tradeoffs, not a guarantee of performance for every game: Deterministic Lockstep in Networked Games.

Keep the server authoritative while predicting on clients
For responsive play, a client can apply the same deterministic transition locally as soon as the player acts. The server still validates commands and determines accepted state; it can send corrections when a prediction differs. A rollback system restores a known state and re-simulates subsequent inputs. Deterministic transitions make that replay more reliable, but do not make a modified client trustworthy or prevent cheating: server-side validation and authority remain separate requirements.
Photon’s Quantum 3 documentation is one example of a framework built around deterministic ECS simulation, input prediction, and rollback. It describes clients exchanging player input and simulating locally, with a game-agnostic authoritative server component synchronizing clocks and managing input latency. This is an architectural option, not a requirement to replace an existing game’s reducer design.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a specific engine or networking package, verify the behavior against the version in use. For example, Unity’s Netcode for Entities 1.3.0-pre.4 documentation search result describes fixed-rate server simulation and prediction at the same fixed timestep; treat that as version-specific rather than a general guarantee for Unity packages: Client prediction, Netcode for Entities 1.3.0-pre.4.
Find and reproduce the first divergent tick
When client and server disagree, comparing only the final screen state is rarely enough. Capture a reproducible trace that identifies the build and records the initial state or seed, tick number, and ordered commands. Compare states at deterministic boundaries: start with a coarse state hash, then inspect component or entity details to find the earliest mismatch.
- Record the match inputs. Preserve the starting state or seed, build and version identifiers, tick numbers, and commands in the order actually applied.
- Compare at tick boundaries. Find the first tick where server and client state hashes differ; then compare the relevant entities and components.
- Replay from the last matching state. Feed the same ordered commands into both simulations and inspect the transition at the first divergent tick, including every explicit context value it used.
- Preserve artifacts. Keep logs and state snapshots from both sides so the mismatch can be reproduced rather than inferred from a later symptom.
Factorio’s desynchronization documentation offers a concrete lockstep example: it defines a desync as server/client disagreement, explains that the game sends user inputs and each participant must simulate every tick identically, and describes reports containing client and server save copies plus a log. It identifies game code, mods or scenarios, and hardware miscalculation among possible causes. Its statement that latency or performance problems do not themselves cause desyncs applies to Factorio’s system, not every multiplayer architecture.
