How to Make More Money with AdSense Anchor Ads

Google reports better performance for top and collapsible anchors in its experiments, but the right AdSense settings depend on your site. Here’s how to configure and measure them.

You can improve the chance of earning more from AdSense anchor ads by testing their placement and format on your own site—not by relying on a universal revenue estimate. Google says its experiments found top-positioned and collapsible anchors performed better, but its documentation gives no anchor-specific uplift that applies to every publisher.

What anchor ads do—and what you can control

Google describes anchor ads as overlays that stick to the edge of a visitor’s screen and can be dismissed. They can appear on mobile and desktop. A top anchor waits until the visitor has scrolled far enough that it will not cover the site’s branding or navigation; Google may instead choose the bottom if it determines top placement could harm the user experience. Google’s anchor-ad overview also explains that dynamic anchors can change size or appearance, including expanding, collapsing, or moving to a compact corner. Mobile dynamic anchors are frequency-capped per user.

In the Auto ads settings, the documented placement choices are top or bottom, top only, and bottom only. Google announced these position controls on May 20, 2025. The current interface and feature availability can change, so use the options shown in your AdSense account rather than assuming every site has identical controls.

Choose a placement and format

Top, bottom, or either position

To adjust placement, open AdSense and go to Ads, edit the relevant site, open Overlay formats, then expand Advanced settings. Select top or bottom, top only, or bottom only, and apply the settings to the site. Google’s anchor-ad settings guidance describes these controls.

Top-only gives Google less placement flexibility but may be worth comparing with bottom-only or either position. Google reports that top anchors performed better in its experiments; it does not publish a generally applicable revenue percentage or guarantee that the same result will occur on your site.

Dynamic or regular anchors

Dynamic anchors can adapt their appearance, while regular anchors do not use the collapsible behavior. Google’s implementation guidance says its experiments found collapsible anchors performed better than regular anchors. That is a Google-reported finding, not a forecast for an individual publisher. If you value a more restrained format, compare the regular option where it is available and weigh the experience alongside revenue.

Whether to serve on wide screens

Google’s current Auto ads documentation includes a control for allowing anchors on screens wider than 1000 pixels. On May 21, 2026, Google announced an expansion of dynamic-anchor behavior to those screens for publishers meeting its stated opt-in conditions. The announcement’s review period ended June 21, 2026, so check your live settings and reporting rather than treating the rollout as pending or universal. Google’s current anchor documentation describes the available controls.

Use code only when the account controls are not enough

Google documents code parameters for publishers who need bottom-only anchors. In the AdSense code, data-overlays="bottom" restricts anchors to the bottom. data-overlays="collapsed-bottom" restricts them to regular, non-collapsible anchors at the bottom. Follow the current Google code instructions before changing site code.

These code settings override the position selected in Auto ads and can enable anchors even when they are turned off in Auto ads settings. Google warns that opting out of top placement or collapsible anchors may reduce potential earnings. Make code changes deliberately, since they can take precedence over the account-level choice.

How to test for an earnings improvement

  1. Preview before applying. In AdSense, open Ads, edit the site, and review the Auto ads preview for the anchor placements and formats you are considering. Google documents previewing settings in its Auto ads guidance.
  2. Compare alternatives where appropriate. Use an Auto ads experiment if it is available and suitable in your account. Google documents experiments for comparing formats and ad loads; check the current account for setup options and availability.
  3. Review the site’s reporting. Use the Ads overview report to examine performance. Google’s anchor documentation describes filtering by ad format Anchor and served creative Dynamic anchors to track dynamic-anchor performance.
  4. Assess the visitor experience as well as revenue. Consider whether the overlay obstructs important page content or feels intrusive, and whether visitors can dismiss it easily. Don’t treat a revenue change alone as the only measure of a good setting.

Compare results on your own site before settling on a configuration. Google’s published findings support testing top and collapsible anchors, but the cited documentation does not establish a universal anchor-specific revenue uplift. A separate Google AdSense Help page cites a 20% uplift in total ad revenue for HiNative using in-page Auto ads; the cited case study does not attribute that figure to anchor ads, so it is not an anchor earnings forecast.

Check other Auto ads settings separately

Anchor placement is only one part of Auto ads. Google recommends placing AdSense code on every page where you intend to show ads, activating Auto ads, and avoiding excessive ad blocking, which can limit earnings. In-page ad load, spacing controls, and page exclusions are additional settings, but they are not anchor-specific levers. See Google’s Auto ads documentation for the current controls.

Keep the format within policy and usable

Do not make an anchor look like site content, encourage accidental clicks, or offer compensation or incentives for clicking ads. Google’s AdSense ad placement policies also restrict placements such as ads in pop-up or pop-under windows. Keep advertising clearly distinguishable from editorial content and preserve a usable way for visitors to dismiss overlays.
