You can sell creator merch through a connected store promoted on YouTube, a marketplace such as Etsy, or your own online storefront. To work out whether it can make money, subtract production, shipping, platform and payment fees, refunds, discounts, and promotion costs from what customers pay. There is no universal creator-merch earnings figure: your result depends on your audience, offer, costs, and sales.
Start with a product your audience would want
Choose an original design or a product idea that fits what people know you for. Before building a large catalog, ask your audience what they would use or wear, or test a small range. That is a practical way to limit unnecessary inventory and setup work, not a guarantee of demand or sales.

Use only artwork, names, logos, characters, and other material you have the rights to use commercially. Being recognizable to your fans does not give you permission to sell someone else’s intellectual property.
Choose how to make and fulfill the merch
Print-on-demand
A print-on-demand (POD) provider makes an item after a customer orders it and handles production and shipping. This can avoid buying a large batch of stock upfront, but it does not guarantee a profit. Include the provider’s production and shipping charges, platform fees, and your other costs when setting a price. Printful’s Etsy integration describes this made-to-order workflow and highlights those cost considerations.

Use an Etsy production partner
Etsy defines a production partner as an outside party that physically produces items based on a seller’s original designs. If a partner helps make a listing’s product, Etsy requires disclosure of that production assistance on applicable listings. Check Etsy’s current Seller Policy and listing rules before publishing; the policy information reviewed for this article states an effective date of July 9, 2026.
Make and ship items yourself
In-house production gives you direct control over making, packing, and shipping orders, but it also means paying for materials or equipment where needed and handling the related work. A heat press is an optional tool for some DIY apparel production, not a requirement for selling merch. Compare its upfront cost and your time with the cost and convenience of outsourcing.
Choose where to sell
YouTube Shopping with a connected store
Eligible creators can connect a store to YouTube Shopping and feature their own products in channel surfaces and tagged videos, Shorts, and live streams. Eligibility, retailer integrations, and feature availability can vary, so check current YouTube Help guidance before planning a launch. YouTube’s Shopping tools can also let eligible creators review Shopping analytics.

For sales through a connected store, YouTube says the official merch retailer or platform—not Google—is responsible for merchandising, warehousing, fulfillment, refunds, customer service, inventory management, and creator payment. Confirm the retailer’s terms so you know what it handles and what remains your responsibility.
Etsy
Etsy can provide a marketplace listing destination for seller-designed goods, including eligible items made with production assistance. Follow its seller and production-partner disclosure rules, and check the live policy for fees, taxes, and location-specific details before you set prices.
Your own online store
A standalone storefront gives you a direct place to list products and can be connected to social channels. Before choosing one, compare platform and payment-processing fees, how you will bring visitors to the store, and who will handle orders, returns, and customer support. Read the applicable store and provider terms rather than assuming a platform will take care of those tasks.

Do not confuse your merch with tagged third-party products
YouTube distinguishes selling your own merchandise through a connected store from earning commissions on other retailers’ products tagged in content. For third-party products, the retailer determines details such as product information, availability, price, and purchase terms, which can change. Do not present those commissions as income from your own merch sales.

Use this planning formula for each product:
Contribution before creator overhead = customer payment − production cost − shipping paid by seller − marketplace, store, and payment fees − expected refunds or returns − discounts or advertising costs.
This is a way to estimate what remains before broader creator-business costs, not a promise of profit. Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy, reviewed October 3, 2026, lists a 6.5% transaction fee applied to the displayed listing price plus shipping and gift wrapping, and a $0.20 listing fee. These are not necessarily the only costs: location, taxes, and other applicable fees matter. Check Etsy’s live policy for your situation before publishing a listing.

Set a price and make checkout clear
Build the price from the complete cost stack, not just the blank garment or provider’s base production charge. Decide what shipping you will charge, and state the product details, delivery estimate, and return terms clearly. If shipping or another charge is not included in an advertised total, make sure buyers see the relevant charges before they are asked to pay.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s guidance says certain charges excluded from an advertised total, such as shipping or taxes, must be disclosed before payment and that the final amount must be shown prominently. This is U.S. guidance; legal requirements depend on the jurisdiction and transaction.

Show the merch in context and direct viewers to the correct listing. Explain details buyers need to choose—such as fit, material, shipping, and return terms—accurately. If you use YouTube Shopping, eligible creators can tag connected-store products in supported content and review Shopping analytics.

Review actual orders, fees, refunds, customer feedback, and promotional costs before changing a product mix or price. Gross sales, a retailer’s payment to you, and profit after costs are different amounts. Do not treat a sales total or a platform payout as proof of profit, and do not rely on a generic creator earnings figure: the official platform sources cited here do not establish a universal amount creators make from merch.
