You can make money on YouTube through advertising and Premium revenue, channel memberships, viewer payments such as Super Chat and Super Thanks, and product sales or commissions through Shopping. Most of these options require joining the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), and meeting its thresholds only makes you eligible to apply—it does not guarantee acceptance or income. Check YouTube Studio → Earn for the options available to your channel and country.
How YouTube monetization works
YouTube monetization is a set of separate earning features, not a single switch. Some features depend on reaching viewing thresholds; others depend on fan support, live interaction, or products. You must meet the relevant YPP requirements, pass YouTube’s channel review, and then enable the features available to you. YouTube says there is no guarantee about how much, or whether, a partner will be paid. See YouTube’s partner earnings overview.

Seeing an ad on a video does not by itself mean the creator receives a share. YouTube says it may serve ads on content whose owner has not met the higher YPP eligibility criteria; in that case the creator is not yet eligible for a share of that revenue. YPP eligibility details.
YPP eligibility: two thresholds to understand
In regions where expanded YPP is available, YouTube has an earlier entry tier for certain fan-funding and Shopping features, and a higher tier that adds Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads, and YouTube Premium revenue sharing. These are eligibility thresholds, not earnings guarantees.

Thresholds and feature availability are subject to YouTube’s current rules and regional rollout. Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward the long-form watch-hour route. Paid campaign views and watch time do not count toward the thresholds, apart from qualifying organic follow-on views described by YouTube. Other application requirements
YouTube also requires channels to follow its monetization policies, be in a supported country or region, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, enable 2-Step Verification, have access to advanced features, and link an active AdSense for YouTube account. YouTube reviews the channel as a whole using automated systems and human reviewers. The current requirements and application status appear in the YPP overview.
Apply and check status
- Open YouTube Studio and select Earn in the left menu.
- Review the eligibility progress and the features offered for your channel. If the application option is available, follow the on-screen steps to apply and link or set up AdSense for YouTube.
- Wait for YouTube’s review. Reaching a threshold makes you eligible to apply; it does not mean the channel is accepted.
- After acceptance, return to Earn and enable the individual monetization modules you qualify for, accepting any applicable terms.

Watch Page ads monetize eligible viewing on a video’s watch page. YouTube Premium revenue is associated with eligible Premium members watching your content. Both are part of the higher YPP tier; neither has a universal earnings-per-view figure. YouTube’s current terms, viewed on 2026-10-03, state that creators receive 55% of net revenues from Watch Page ads. This is a module-specific revenue share, not a promised take-home amount.

Shorts Feed ads
Shorts revenue comes from a Creator Pool allocation based on a creator’s share of eligible views, rather than the Watch Page ad model. YouTube’s current terms, viewed on 2026-10-03, state a 45% share of allocated Shorts Creator Pool revenue. Actual earnings depend on activity and the applicable agreement; the percentage is not an income forecast.
Channel memberships
Members make recurring payments in exchange for perks you offer. This can suit channels able to provide ongoing benefits and communicate their value consistently. YouTube’s current terms, viewed on 2026-10-03, state that creators receive 70% of net revenues from memberships.
Super Chat and Super Stickers
During eligible live streams and Premieres, viewers can pay to highlight messages or use animated stickers in live chat. These features depend on live interaction and have their own eligibility and availability requirements. YouTube Shopping
Eligible creators may promote products from their own store or tag products from other brands. YouTube says creators may earn commission from third-party products featured through the program. Product and creator eligibility, availability, and terms vary; check Studio before making plans around Shopping.

These routes are not mutually exclusive, but a feature’s presence in YPP does not mean it is available to every creator. Compare them by audience behavior, production workload, and whether you can deliver the relevant viewer value—not by an assumed universal ranking of earnings.
Keep monetization in good standing
YouTube’s monetization policies apply both to channels applying for YPP and to channels already enrolled. They incorporate Community Guidelines, terms, copyright and rights-clearance requirements, advertiser-friendly content guidance, and feature-specific terms. A channel can meet the numeric threshold and still fail review or later face enforcement.
- Use content you have rights to use. Copyright claims and unresolved rights issues can affect monetization and revenue.
- Avoid invalid traffic and fake engagement. YouTube lists these among issues that can lead to earnings being withheld or adjusted.
- Consider advertiser suitability. Videos that do not meet advertiser-friendly guidance or other restrictions may receive limited or no ad earnings.
- Keep publishing or posting. YouTube reserves the right to turn off monetization on channels with no upload or Posts-tab activity for six months or more; it is not stated as an automatic outcome in every case.

How payment and taxes work
AdSense for YouTube is the payment route for finalized earnings. YouTube says finalized previous-month earnings are added to the AdSense for YouTube balance between the 7th and 12th of the current month. Revenue shown in analytics is estimated until finalized; invalid traffic, Content ID claims or disputes, and campaign types can change the estimate or delay payment. See the earnings overview.
Creators may owe taxes where they live, and the applicable rules depend on their circumstances and jurisdiction. Google requires U.S. tax information from monetizing creators regardless of location to determine withholding on earnings from U.S. viewers. Consult the relevant tax authority or a qualified tax professional for personal guidance.

Troubleshoot common monetization problems
- You reached a threshold but cannot apply: Confirm that expanded YPP is available in your country, check the other account requirements and valid activity windows, and use the status shown under Studio → Earn.
- Your application was not accepted: Review the channel-level policy guidance and any notices in Studio. A threshold does not override the whole-channel review.
- A feature is missing after acceptance: Check region and feature-specific eligibility in Earn; YPP membership alone does not enable every feature everywhere.
- Ads appear, but you do not receive a share: Ads may run on content outside the higher YPP criteria. Confirm that your channel has qualified for and enabled Watch Page ads.
- Estimated revenue falls or payment is delayed: Check for invalid-traffic adjustments, Content ID claims or disputes, and AdSense for YouTube payment status.
