To make your iPhone read the screen aloud, turn on Speak Screen in Settings > Accessibility > Read & Speak, then swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers. You can change the rate during playback with the speech controls or set the general speaking rate with the slider in Read & Speak.
Turn on Speak Screen
- Open Settings, then tap Accessibility > Read & Speak.
- Tap Speak Screen and turn it on.
- Open the screen containing the text you want read aloud. Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to start speaking.
Apple’s iPhone user guide describes the controls that appear during playback: use them to pause, adjust the rate, move forward or back through the content, or choose Speak on Touch and tap text to have it read aloud.

Change the speaking rate
Adjust the rate while listening
When Speak Screen is playing, use the on-screen speech controls to change the rate for playback. The controls also let you pause or navigate through the spoken content.

- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Read & Speak.
- Drag the Speaking Rate slider to the rate you prefer.
The playback controls adjust the rate while you are listening; the Speaking Rate slider sets the general rate for spoken content. Apple does not state a numeric range for the slider in its guide.

Optional voice and reading settings
In Read & Speak, you can also customize the voice and dialect, default language, automatic language detection, and pronunciations. These settings are optional; they are not required to enable Speak Screen.
Speak Screen is different from Siri’s speaking rate
These steps apply to spoken on-screen content. They do not change Siri’s speaking rate, which Apple documents separately under Settings > Accessibility > Siri.
