To reduce battery use from iPhone Always-On Display, turn it off at Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display. If you want to keep the clock and other glanceable details visible, leave it on and switch off Show Wallpaper, Show Notifications, or both on the same screen. Apple does not publish a specific battery-savings figure for any of these changes.
Choose how much of Always-On Display you want to keep
On supported iPhone models, Always-On Display is on by default. It dims the display and minimizes on-screen motion while showing information at a glance; it is not the regular bright lock screen left on continuously. Apple describes this design as providing glanceable information in a low-power, privacy-preserving way, but does not quantify its battery use.

| Option | What remains visible | Setting |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the feature, simplify the screen | Always-On Display stays on; wallpaper, notifications, or both can be hidden. | Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display; turn off Show Wallpaper and/or Show Notifications. |
| Disable Always-On Display | The display no longer shows its always-on lock-screen view while the phone is locked. | Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display; turn the feature off. |
| Use Low Power Mode | Always-On Display turns off as part of broader power-saving changes. | Settings > Battery; the exact path varies by iPhone generation. |
Apple documents the content controls, but not how much battery hiding wallpaper or notifications saves compared with leaving them visible. Choose those settings for the information and appearance you want rather than expecting a particular measured gain.

- Turn off Show Wallpaper, Show Notifications, or both.
The display remains in its Always-On state with those elements hidden. Apple does not state a battery-savings amount for either toggle.
Use Low Power Mode for broader savings

Apple also documents enabling Low Power Mode through Control Center or Siri. It turns off automatically after the iPhone charges to 80% or higher.
This mode is broader than changing the Always-On setting alone. Apple lists reduced display brightness, a 30-second Auto-Lock, some disabled visual effects, paused iCloud Photos, automatic downloads and email fetch turned off, and Background App Refresh disabled among its effects. On ProMotion models, it limits the display refresh rate to 60 frames per second. Some tasks may take longer, and background features are limited.

Availability and default behavior depend on the model. Check Settings > Battery > Power Mode and Apple’s current guidance for your iPhone before relying on it.

If the battery still drains quickly
Do not assume Always-On Display is the cause of unexplained or persistent drain. Check the iPhone’s Battery screen for usage information, then review Battery Health. If Battery Health shows Service, Apple says to consider battery replacement and follow the on-screen instructions. Other hardware, software, or usage factors can also contribute to battery drain.
