You can tell Google which image best represents a page, but you cannot force Google Discover to show it. Use a relevant, high-quality image; expose it consistently through og:image and/or schema.org markup; permit large previews; and make sure Google can find and access the image.
Choose an image that represents the page
Use a large, relevant image that reflects the page’s main subject. Google recommends avoiding generic logos and text-heavy artwork. For Discover, its guidance recommends an image at least 1200 pixels wide and more than 300,000 pixels in total, composed for a landscape 16:9 presentation. For example, 1280 × 720 is 921,600 pixels. Google may crop images automatically, so keep the important subject visible in a landscape crop. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that an image will appear in Discover. Tell Google which image you prefer
Google documents both the Open Graph og:image tag and schema.org image markup as sources for thumbnails in Search and Discover. You can use either, or both. If you supply both, point them to the same page-specific image so the signals agree. Google does not document one format as universally superior; choose the one your site can maintain accurately. Its March 2, 2026 documentation update clarified that both are sources. Google image SEO best practices · Google Search documentation updates

Allow a large image preview
On pages where you want a large preview, add a robots directive that permits it:
<meta name="robots" content="max-image-preview:large">
Google describes large as allowing a larger image preview up to viewport width. The other values are standard, which permits a default preview, and none, which disallows image previews. This setting controls preview size; it does not tell Google which image to choose. AMP is another route named in Google’s Discover image recommendations. Check for page-level directives that may restrict previews. Google robots meta tag specification

Make the image discoverable and accessible
- Use a standard HTML
<img src="...">for the image where possible. Google says it can find images in an image element’ssrcattribute, but does not index CSS background images. - If you use responsive image markup, include an
<img src>fallback. - Ensure Googlebot can access both the page and the image URL; metadata cannot compensate for an image Google cannot fetch.
- Consider an image sitemap to expose image URLs that might otherwise be undiscovered.
Verify the rendered page, not just the CMS setting
- Open the page’s rendered HTML and check its page-specific
og:imagevalue. - Inspect the structured data, if present, and confirm its image URL matches the intended image.
- Check the robots directives for the page and confirm that preview restrictions do not contradict the desired large preview.
- Open the image URL and verify that the image is available to crawlers and has the expected dimensions and crop.
- Confirm that the image is represented in crawlable HTML rather than only as a CSS background.
These checks validate the implementation signals, not Google’s eventual thumbnail choice. Google says image-preview selection is automated. Google image SEO best practices
If Discover still shows a different image
Google may select an image from multiple sources, and its documentation does not offer a setting to force a thumbnail. Check the likely failure points in this order:

- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
- Conflicting signals: Make
og:imageand schema.org markup agree, if both are present. - Weak image choice: Replace generic or text-heavy artwork with a representative, high-resolution image and review the landscape crop.
- Preview restriction: Check that
max-image-preview:largeis present where desired and not contradicted by a page-level robots directive. - Image not found or blocked: Provide a crawlable image URL, use an HTML
<img src>, and confirm Googlebot can access it. - Rendered page differs from the editor: Inspect the live page output, since templates or page-specific settings may produce different metadata than the CMS field suggests.
Even when these signals are correct, the chosen preview remains Google’s decision.

What the published case studies do—and don’t—show
Google’s August 11, 2021 case-study article reported that Kirbie’s Cravings saw a 79% CTR increase after adding max-image-preview:large. It also reported a 30% CTR increase and a 332% click increase over six months for Istoé after adopting large image preview settings. These are publisher-reported historical outcomes, not controlled evidence that the tag alone caused the gains or a forecast of current results. Google’s case study
