How to make Google Chrome the Windows 11 default browser

Windows 11 lets you choose which browser opens links from email, search results, and app shortcuts. If you’re trying to make Google Chrome the default, the process is straightforward—but small details (like HTTP/HTTPS ownership) can trip you up.

This guide walks you through the reliable ways to set Chrome as the default browser in Windows 11, how to verify it’s working, and what to do when Windows keeps switching back to Microsoft Edge.

What you need before you start

Before changing defaults, make sure Google Chrome is installed and updated. If Chrome isn’t installed yet, install it first from Google’s official site or via your organization’s software process.

  • Chrome installed: Open Chrome once so Windows can register its handlers.
  • Updated Windows: Windows 11 builds around 22H2/23H2/24H2 can have slightly different wording.
  • Admin rights (often required): If your PC is managed by an organization, policies may override defaults.

Method 1: Set Chrome as the default browser in Windows Settings

This is the most direct and usually the most reliable method. Use it when you want to control defaults for HTTP/HTTPS in one place.

  1. Press Win + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps > Default apps.
  3. In the search box, type Chrome.
  4. Select Google Chrome from the results.
  5. Look for Set default or browser default entries for protocols like HTTP and HTTPS.
  6. Click any default you see (for example, HTTP/HTTPS) and choose Google Chrome.
  7. Close Settings and test a link from an app (Mail, Teams, or a website shortcut).

If you don’t immediately see HTTP/HTTPS controls on your build, use Method 3 below (it’s the same concept, just surfaced in a more granular view).

Method 2: Use the Chrome prompt to claim defaults

Chrome can request to become the default. This often works because it triggers Windows’ default-app selection UI for common protocols.

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. In the address bar, go to: chrome://settings/defaultBrowser
  3. Click Make default.
  4. When Windows opens a prompt, select Google Chrome as the default browser and confirm.
  5. Return to the same Chrome page and confirm it no longer says it’s not the default.

If you see the prompt but Windows immediately reverts after a reboot, jump to the troubleshooting checklist.

Method 3: Ensure Chrome is the handler for HTTP and HTTPS

Most “Chrome isn’t the default” issues happen because HTTP/HTTPS didn’t get updated—even if Chrome was selected somewhere.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
  2. Click Choose defaults by link type.
  3. Find HTTP and HTTPS.
  4. Set both to Google Chrome.
  5. Test by clicking a link in an app (not just inside Chrome).

That link-type view is Windows’ ground truth. If HTTP and HTTPS are set correctly, most app links should open in Chrome.

Method 4: Set defaults for file types and special protocols

Some links and content types are handled by special URL protocols (like mailto:) or by file associations. If those keep opening in Edge, this is where to fix it.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
  2. Use Choose defaults by file type.
  3. Search for common web-related entries such as .htm, .html, and .shtml (if present).
  4. Set each file type’s default app to Google Chrome (or to Chrome wherever the option appears).
  5. Also check Choose defaults by link type for protocols like mailto if your use case includes clicking email links.

Not every protocol will show up on every Windows 11 build, but HTTP/HTTPS are the essentials for normal browsing links.

How to verify Chrome is actually the default

Windows can look correct while an app still behaves differently. Verification removes guesswork.

  • Settings check: Confirm in Settings > Apps > Default apps that HTTP and HTTPS show Google Chrome.
  • Real-world test: Copy a URL from another app (for example, open YouTube in Edge and click a link, or use a link in email) and verify it opens in Chrome.
  • Launch test: Right-click a link (in supported apps) and choose Open link in new tab and confirm the target browser.
  • Taskbar pin test: A pinned Chrome icon only controls launching Chrome; it doesn’t guarantee link handling. Focus on link opening behavior.

When it won’t stick: troubleshooting checklist

If Chrome becomes default and then flips back to Edge (or links keep opening in Edge), work through these in order. Many fixes are quick.

1) Restart and re-check HTTP/HTTPS

After changing defaults, restart Windows once, then confirm HTTP and HTTPS still point to Google Chrome.

2) Update Chrome and Windows

Run a Chrome update (menu > Help > About Google Chrome). Then check Windows Update in Settings > Windows Update.

3) Disable or remove conflicting browser-related software

Security tools, “web protection” suites, and privacy extensions sometimes install their own default handler components. If you have third-party security software, check its settings for “browser protection” or “default browser control.”

4) Repair Chrome installation

If Windows can’t reliably register Chrome handlers, reinstall can help. Consider this sequence:

  1. Uninstall Chrome from Settings > Apps.
  2. Reboot.
  3. Install the latest Chrome version from Google.
  4. Open Chrome once, then set defaults again using Method 1 or Method 3.

5) Check for organization policies (managed PCs)

On work or school devices, policies may force Edge (or another approved browser). If you can’t change HTTP/HTTPS or your change reverts immediately, ask your IT admin what’s enforced.

6) Ensure Chrome can launch from Windows

Open Chrome after you log in. If launching fails (crash, permissions issue, missing components), Windows may be unable to set or keep defaults.

Alternative approach: Manage defaults via system tools (enterprise/policy)

If you’re an admin deploying settings across multiple machines, use policy rather than manual UI changes. Exact tooling depends on your environment (Microsoft Intune, Group Policy, or scripting), but the concept is consistent: enforce the browser default handlers.

What to enforce

At minimum, enforce the link types that matter for browsing: http and https to Google Chrome. You may also need to enforce mailto or specific file associations if your workflow relies on them.

Why this matters

Enterprise setups can “heal” defaults back to Edge after updates, meaning manual changes in Settings won’t persist.

Common mistakes that prevent Chrome from becoming default

  • Only changing one place: Selecting Google Chrome as a default app but leaving HTTP/HTTPS unchanged.
  • Testing inside Chrome: Links you click inside a browser already open there by design. Test from an external app.
  • Skipping a reboot: Rare, but handler registration issues can persist until restart.
  • Using a different Chrome profile for testing: Defaults are system-level; don’t assume a profile change affects link handling.
  • Ignoring policy overrides: Managed devices may block changes even if the UI lets you attempt them.

FAQs

Will setting Chrome as default affect iPhone, iPad, or Mac browser behavior?

No. Default browser settings are local to the device OS. Changing Windows 11 defaults won’t change Safari on iOS/iPadOS or defaults on macOS.

Why do YouTube or other sites sometimes still open in Edge?

Many “still opens in Edge” cases are HTTP/HTTPS not set to Chrome, or a link-type/protocol mapping still pointing elsewhere. Re-check Settings > Apps > Default apps > Choose defaults by link type for both HTTP and HTTPS.

Chrome is selected, but links open in Edge anyway—what should I try first?

Go straight to Method 3 and set both HTTP and HTTPS to Chrome. Then restart Windows and retest with a link clicked from an external app.

Can I force Chrome to be default from Chrome itself?

Yes. Use chrome://settings/defaultBrowser and click Make default. If Windows refuses or it reverts, you’ll need the HTTP/HTTPS check or a policy override investigation.

What if I use a file like an HTML document—will Chrome open it automatically?

Not always. If the file association wasn’t set, Windows may use a different default app. Check Choose defaults by file type and set .htm/.html to Chrome.

Bottom Line

To make Google Chrome the default browser on Windows 11, set HTTP and HTTPS to Google Chrome in Settings > Apps > Default apps. That’s the part that actually controls where most links open.

If it won’t stick, verify the link-type defaults after a restart and consider policy or conflicting software—especially on managed PCs.
