You can make Gemini’s replies more consistent with your preferred Assistant style by setting persistent instructions, but instructions change how Gemini responds—not what it can do. They do not add device controls, routines, or integrations that Gemini does not support. For actions, use the supported Android features or Google Home routines; if a feature you rely on is missing, Google says you can switch back to Google Assistant on Android.
How to make Gemini respond more like Google Assistant
Use Instructions for Gemini to set preferences that apply across chats, such as a concise tone, a short answer first, or numbered steps for multi-part requests. Google documents this feature for personal Google Accounts; it is unavailable for work, school, and supervised accounts. Availability also varies by platform and feature.

- Open Gemini settings and help.
- Go to Personal Intelligence, then Instructions for Gemini.
- Add an instruction, or edit or delete an existing one. You can also turn the feature on or off.
Google lists the Gemini mobile app, gemini.google.com, Gemini in Chrome in supported countries, and smartwatch availability for the feature. This can guide Gemini’s wording and make its answers easier to follow. It cannot enable an unsupported reminder, message, or device action, and it does not guarantee Gemini will perform a task successfully.
What instructions can—and cannot—change
Instructions set response preferences. Whether Gemini can carry out a request depends on the relevant app, device capability, connected service, and feature availability. A request to “be more like Assistant” does not itself connect Gemini to a timer, smart lights, messaging, or a routine.

Google says Gemini on Android supports “Hey Google” in supported contexts, screen-related questions, and some quick voice actions, such as sending a message or turning on lights. Some familiar Assistant features may not be supported, and availability can vary by country, language, and account type. Google also notes that Assistant helps power some familiar quick voice actions depending on settings. Check Google’s guide to the Gemini mobile app for the current feature limits and fallback information.

If an instruction asks Gemini to forget or avoid a topic, do not treat that as a reliable way to erase it. Google warns that these instructions “doesn’t always work perfectly.” To make sure Gemini stops mentioning a topic, Google says to delete chats about it from Gemini Apps activity.

Choose the right feature for the job

Google Home routines can also be started by voice or typed commands when Google Home is connected to Gemini Apps. Gemini for Home is a separate Google Home voice-assistant transition, not a result of adding Instructions for Gemini on a phone. Google’s help page describes an early-access rollout to select countries and languages and says adding a Google Home Speaker (2026) makes a home eligible to opt in. Once a home switches, compatible devices use Gemini for Home instead of Google Assistant; the cited Google page says the home cannot switch back. Device, language, rollout, and in some cases a Google Home Premium subscription affect availability. Check Google’s Gemini for Home information before relying on the feature.

Google separately describes Gemini Live on compatible smart speakers and displays as a conversational mode. Actions are not supported during a live conversation; to issue a command, Google says to say “Hey Google” to stop the conversation first. The described experience has device and app requirements and requires a Standard or Advanced Google Home Premium plan. These Home features are not enabled by a text instruction.
