How to Make Gboard More Useful: Android Settings and Workflows to Try

Use Gboard’s Android features more effectively: set up languages, pin reusable clipboard text, dictate and edit by voice, translate drafts and tune the keyboard to suit you.

Gboard can do more than predict your next word. On Android, its clipboard can keep reusable snippets, voice typing can handle punctuation, Translate can draft in another language, and supported devices offer writing tools for editing. Start by choosing the tools and languages you actually use; availability varies by device, Android version, language, region and Gboard version.

Open Gboard settings and put useful tools within reach

On Android, tap a text field to open Gboard, then tap the four-square features menu at the top of the keyboard and choose Settings. Turn on the options you use, such as Glide typing, Text correction or Voice typing. The menu and labels can vary by version. Google’s Gboard setup guide describes the setup path.

Some Android devices already use Gboard as the default keyboard. If a feature is missing, first check that Gboard is updated and set as the default. You can also enable the Google Search button in Gboard’s Search settings.

Add only the keyboard languages you use

Adding a language to Gboard does not change your Android system language. Open Gboard Settings, go to Languages, add the language and choose its layout. To switch among enabled languages while typing, touch and hold the space bar. Google’s language setup instructions cover adding and switching keyboards.

Keep the list focused on languages you actually write in, and check the layout before switching. Support is feature-specific: a language available for typing may not be available for voice typing, writing tools or translation. Google notes that talk-to-text does not work in every language; check the relevant supported language list for the feature you plan to use.

Save reusable text in the clipboard

Gboard’s Android clipboard can help with recurring details such as a short reply, business information or an address. Copy text, open the Gboard features menu and choose Clipboard. Gboard can identify useful pieces inside copied text—including email addresses, URLs, phone numbers, dates and times—so you can select a particular item instead of pasting the entire block. Support for extracting addresses, dates and times is limited to certain countries, regions and languages.

  1. Copy the text you want to reuse.
  2. Open Gboard’s features menu and tap Clipboard.
  3. Tap an item to paste it, or touch and hold an item and tap Pin to keep it available.

Unpinned clipboard history clears shortly after its last use; it is not permanent storage. Avoid pinning passwords, payment details or other sensitive text. Google documents the feature and its limits in its Gboard clipboard help.

Dictate punctuation and replace words by voice

In most Android text-entry apps, tap Gboard’s microphone and speak. Voice typing recognizes commands such as “period,” “comma,” “question mark,” “new line” and “new paragraph,” although punctuation commands are not available in every language. To correct a word, select it and dictate the replacement. On tablets, the voice toolbar can be moved and includes controls to pause, return to the keyboard and switch among enabled languages. See Google’s voice typing guide.

Advanced voice typing on Pixel

Google lists Pixel 6 and later—including Fold and Tablet models in that generation—as eligible for advanced voice typing. It adds automatic punctuation, spoken emoji and editing commands while the microphone stays on. Google says: “The text that you speak stays on your device and isn’t sent to Google servers except when you use the ‘Fix it’ or detailed edits features.” That statement applies to the documented advanced voice typing workflow, not every Gboard voice feature.

Fix it has narrower eligibility: Google lists Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and later, with English (United States) and network connectivity required. It can correct errors in typed, pasted or dictated text. Check Google’s advanced voice typing instructions for the current device requirements.

On first use, loading can take a few hours and requires a stable internet connection. Google says input text is not shared with Google or another app, and that processing takes place in a secure isolated environment either on the device or in the cloud. That is the writing-tools privacy description; it should not be taken as a claim that every Gboard feature processes all content locally.

Search and share results from the keyboard

Gboard’s Android Search feature can find something without making you leave the active message. Open the features menu, choose Search, enter a query and run it. Tap Share beside a result to insert its link in the message field. Google’s examples include nearby restaurants, videos and weather; see its Gboard Search instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tune sound, vibration and appearance for comfort

To change the keyboard’s look, use Android’s keyboard settings to apply a Gboard theme. In Gboard Settings, open Preferences to adjust keypress sound, sound volume, haptic feedback and vibration strength. Device-level vibration settings can override Gboard’s vibration options. These controls are for comfort and usability, not a proven typing-speed boost. Google’s theme and preference instructions describe the available settings.

What iPhone and iPad users should expect

The Android steps above should not be assumed to work the same way on iPhone or iPad. The US App Store listing for Gboard for iPhone and iPad highlights Glide Typing, Google Search, GIFs, emoji search and stickers. Its published disclosures say searches and microphone voice input are sent to Google for those functions; other typed content is not sent to Google, and words are stored on the device to support spelling and search prediction. These are the listing’s claims and disclosures, not an independent privacy audit.

The Android clipboard workflow is documented for Android, and the available iOS information here does not establish whether the same clipboard feature exists on iPhone. Do not rely on Android instructions as proof of iOS feature parity.
