Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse FFmpeg’s concat demuxer: list each video in the order you want it played in a plain-text playlist, then pass that playlist to FFmpeg and send the output to the YouTube Live ingest URL and stream key. The list determines playback order, but seamless stream-copy playback depends on the files having compatible streams, codecs and time bases.
1. Prepare an ordered playlist text file
Put the playlist and video files in a predictable folder. Create a plain-text file named playlist.txt and add one file line per video, in playback order:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'video-01.mp4'
file 'video-02.mp4'
file 'video-03.mp4'
The optional ffconcat version 1.0 marker must be the first line exactly as shown for FFmpeg to recognize the format automatically. Paths can be relative to the working directory or absolute. Quote paths when appropriate; spaces and special characters need correct quoting or escaping. Check that every listed file exists and that FFmpeg can open it. The FFmpeg Formats documentation describes the concat demuxer as reading files and directives from a text file and processing the files one after another.
How order and timing work
The concat demuxer presents packets sequentially and adjusts timestamps so each file follows the previous one. File durations affect the start times of later files. If a file’s duration is inaccurate, later timestamps can be wrong and playback may show artifacts; the playlist’s duration directive can override a detected duration when you know the correct value. The demuxer also expects compatible input streams for reliable concatenation, including matching stream layouts, codecs and time bases.

2. Choose stream copy or a consistent transcode
Start by checking whether the source files have compatible streams. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation explains its input and output options; the concat demuxer’s compatibility requirements determine whether copying packets directly is viable.
| Approach | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Stream copy (-c copy) |
Inputs have compatible streams and the selected output supports them. | Avoids decoding and re-encoding, but cannot reconcile mismatched codecs, stream layouts or time bases. |
| Transcode to one output profile | Inputs differ, or you need a consistent resolution, frame rate or audio format. | Produces a common output format, but re-encodes media and uses compute. Settings must suit your sources, encoder and upload bandwidth. |

ffmpeg -re -f concat -i playlist.txt -c copy -f flv "<YouTube RTMP(S) ingest URL and stream key>"
-re reads at the media’s native rate, which is useful when producing realtime output. -c copy copies streams rather than re-encoding them. If FFmpeg rejects a path or the playlist needs paths outside the concat demuxer’s safe subset, -safe 0 can permit them:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy -f flv "<YouTube RTMP(S) ingest URL and stream key>"
Use -safe 0 only with a playlist you control; it relaxes path restrictions. For trusted, simple relative paths, try the command without it first.

Example transcode for 720p30 SDR
If the inputs are not suitable for stream copy, this illustrative command scales video to fit within 1280×720, pads to that frame size, converts to 30 fps and a common pixel format, and encodes H.264 video with AAC audio:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-vf "scale=1280:720:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1280:720:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,fps=30,format=yuv420p"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "<YouTube RTMP(S) ingest URL and stream key>"
This is a starting example, not a universal profile. YouTube’s current live encoder settings list 8 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p30 and 3 Mbps as the minimum. At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds; its guidance also recommends CBR. The example sets a bitrate and maximum rate, but you should confirm the encoder’s behavior and use YouTube’s current table for your selected codec, resolution and frame rate. YouTube also recommends AAC or MP3 audio. Ensure your upload bandwidth can sustain the output.

3. Configure YouTube Live and start the stream
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live event. YouTube says first-time live activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of a scheduled broadcast. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the destination details. Put the exact stream URL and key from Live Control Room into the FFmpeg destination. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS when supported. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to that stream.
- Check the output profile. Match resolution and frame rate to your intended output and encoder capability, use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for that profile, and confirm bandwidth is sufficient.
- Test before the real broadcast. Check the playlist order and paths, then run a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Include both movement and audio: YouTube specifically recommends testing before going live.
- Start FFmpeg and monitor Live Control Room. Check the preview, audio and stream-health messages while the stream is running. YouTube’s stream tips cover testing and monitoring.
4. Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg cannot open a listed file: Check spelling, working directory, permissions and path syntax. Use absolute paths to isolate relative-path problems; quote or escape spaces and special characters correctly.
- The first file plays but later files glitch or timestamps jump: Check that the files have compatible streams, codecs and time bases. Inspect duration metadata; inaccurate durations affect the timestamps of subsequent files. Try overriding a known incorrect duration in the playlist or transcode to a consistent output profile.
-c copyfails or the output is not accepted: Stream copy is conditional, not a compatibility fix. Confirm the source streams are compatible and that the output muxer and protocol accept them; otherwise use a controlled transcode.- YouTube does not receive a signal: Recheck the current ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room, verify that the event is ready, and inspect FFmpeg’s error output. Do not reuse an old destination if YouTube shows different details for the selected stream.
- The stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor health: Compare the actual output settings with YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate. Check that available upload bandwidth can sustain the bitrate, and test again with a simpler profile if necessary.
- The preview has no sound or motion: Confirm the playlist’s files contain the expected audio and video streams, and run a test that includes both movement and audio before the scheduled broadcast.
5. Copyright and reused-content checks still apply
FFmpeg only transports and encodes the files you provide; it does not grant rights to broadcast them or determine whether a channel qualifies for monetization. Before streaming, confirm that you have the rights needed for the video and audio, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies. A playlist made of prerecorded clips does not become original material simply because it is sent as a live stream. Check each item in the playlist, including music, images and third-party footage, before broadcasting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to leaving FFmpeg running on your own machine. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded files to YouTube, not a camera feed.
