To reduce power use by a wired Ethernet adapter in Windows, identify the Ethernet adapter you actually use, then preserve or enable its supported power-saving features in Device Manager or through feature-specific PowerShell settings. The available controls depend on the adapter and its driver: Windows power management, Ethernet Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE), and PCIe link-state power management are related but separate settings.
Find the Ethernet adapter you use
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Select the wired Ethernet adapter connected to your network. Check its name and properties rather than changing every listed adapter: the list may also include Wi-Fi, virtual, dock, or unused adapters.
Names and settings shown in Device Manager come from the installed hardware driver, so they can differ between computers.

Check Device Manager for power-saving settings
Open the Ethernet adapter’s Properties. Look for a Power Management tab and for power-related options in Advanced. Depending on the driver, a relevant option might refer to Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE), Green Ethernet, or power saving. Record the original value before changing anything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the driver provides a clear power-saving option, leave it enabled or enable it when energy efficiency is the goal. Do not confuse an EEE or Green Ethernet property with the checkbox Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power: the checkbox is an adapter power-management control, while EEE is an Ethernet link feature. Either option may be absent, and names and behavior are not universal. Microsoft Q&A discussions reflect these labels and missing-option concerns, but do not establish that every adapter exposes them (Microsoft Q&A).

- 𝐀𝐕𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐔𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝟕𝟓𝟎 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐭 - Powered by HomePlug AV2, delivers AV1000 powerline speeds through existing electrical wiring. Speeds cannot exceed your internet plan's limit and may be lower due to wiring quality, distance, and interference.
- Ideal for multi-story homes, basements, attics, and garages.
- 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐮𝐲 - Adapters must be plugged directly into wall outlets on the same electrical circuit. Does not work with power strips, surge protectors, or extension cords. Place away from large appliances, such as washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners.
- 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 - Performance may be limited or blocked in homes with AFCI breakers, which are standard in many homes built after 2000. Powerline may also not work with routers or gateways using modified, open-source (e.g., DD-WRT), or non-standard firmware.
If you are troubleshooting a connection or wake problem rather than reducing idle power, change only one relevant setting at a time. Check whether the symptom changes, and restore the recorded value if the result is worse.
Understand what Windows adapter power management does
Network adapters can operate in different power states. D0 is the fully powered working state. D1, D2, and D3 are sleeping states, with higher-numbered states using less power; D3 may retain some power as D3hot or reach zero as D3cold. The hardware determines which states and transitions are available (Microsoft: Device Power States for Network Adapters).

- 2 GIGABIT PORTS - Provides a secure wired network for connected devices, such as desktops, smart TVs, game consoles, and more. Ethernet cables are included. Tip: Expand connections with an Ethernet switch (sold separately).
Two Windows/NDIS capabilities are worth distinguishing when supported:
- Selective suspend can suspend an idle adapter into a low-power state, reducing power overhead for both the network adapter and processor.
- Device sleep on disconnect allows the adapter to enter low-power standby while the network medium is disconnected, then wake when media reconnects.
These behaviors can reduce power while idle or disconnected, but the adapter is not necessarily fully active in a low-power state. The practical effect on responsiveness, availability, and wake behavior depends on the hardware and configuration. Microsoft documents these options in Set-NetAdapterPowerManagement.

Use PowerShell only when you need to inspect or configure supported features
The Windows NetAdapter PowerShell module offers feature-specific power-management controls, including selective suspend, device sleep on disconnect, wake controls, and packet coalescing. Accepted cmdlet settings do not mean every adapter supports every feature. Run PowerShell with appropriate administrator permissions and use the adapter’s actual local name rather than assuming it is called Ethernet.
Disable-NetAdapterPowerManagement is not an energy-saving command. With no feature parameters, it disables the power-management features it covers and restarts the adapter by default. That can briefly interrupt network connectivity. For example, if the adapter is actually named Ethernet, the command is:

Disable-NetAdapterPowerManagement -Name "Ethernet"
Use this broad disable operation only when you intend to turn those features off, not to make Ethernet more energy efficient. The -NoRestart switch suppresses the automatic restart, but Microsoft notes that many advanced property changes require an adapter restart to take effect (Microsoft: Disable-NetAdapterPowerManagement).

Windows power plans also include PCI Express link-state power management, with levels named None, Moderate Power Savings, and Maximum Power Savings. Microsoft describes the latter two in terms of attempting PCIe L0 or L1 states while the link is idle. This is a PCIe link policy, not the same control as Ethernet EEE or an Ethernet driver’s power-management property. The setting is marked hidden in Microsoft’s power-setting documentation, and its availability in a particular Windows interface may vary (Microsoft: Link state power management).

Check the effect and restore settings if needed
- Change one setting at a time and apply it. If the driver or PowerShell operation requires an adapter restart, expect a brief loss of connectivity.
- Check the result against your actual goal: lower idle power, a reliable wired connection, or successful connectivity after sleep.
- If connection stability or wake behavior gets worse, return the setting to the value you recorded before making the change.
The cited Microsoft documentation describes capabilities and power states, but does not establish a specific wattage or percentage saved by changing these settings. A numerical saving would require separate measurement evidence.
