Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteClear PLA can transmit light, but an FDM print often looks frosted rather than glass-clear. The best starting point is the profile and drying guidance for your exact filament, followed by small, controlled tests of temperature, speed, cooling, layer height, extrusion, and internal structure. Layer lines and gaps scatter light, so settings can improve clarity without guaranteeing an optically clear result.
Why clear PLA often looks cloudy
The filament’s clear appearance does not automatically carry over to the finished part. Each deposited line and layer creates surfaces and interfaces that scatter light; small gaps and rough texture add to the haze. MatterHackers notes that clear filament commonly looks frosted straight off the bed (MatterHackers’ clear-filament guide).

That means transparency is a result of the filament formulation, print settings, geometry, and surface finish—not simply a matter of choosing a spool labeled “clear.” Define the goal first: a part that glows when lit, a translucent cover, or a lens-like optical surface demands different compromises.

| Product and source | Nozzle | Bed | Speed | Drying | Additional guidance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FormFutura Transparent PLA, technical sheet issued and updated 2026-02-06 (technical data sheet) | 190–225°C | 45–55°C | 50–350 mm/s | Approximately 4–6 hours at 40–50°C | Fan 50–100%; the sheet calls these general starting guidelines and says fine-tuning may be needed. |
| Polymaker Panchroma Translucent PLA (product page) | 190–230°C | 25–60°C | Maximum 200 mm/s | 55°C for 6 hours | Recommends a 0.4 mm or larger nozzle, full cooling for surface quality, thin walls, and controlled infill for translucency. |
| Fillamentum PLA Crystal Clear (printing guide, updated 2024-08) | Drying is highly recommended at 50°C for 4 hours. |
Do not combine one maker’s temperature or speed range with another maker’s drying routine or maximum speed. Use the product-specific instructions for your spool, printer, nozzle, and slicer. FormFutura’s product guidance also describes higher temperatures and lower speeds as a way to visually blend layer lines, but those changes still need to stay within the material’s supported range.
Dry only as the manufacturer directs
Drying instructions vary, as the examples above show. Follow the exact product guidance and use temperature-controlled equipment suitable for its stated routine; do not assume that one PLA drying temperature or duration applies to every spool.

Tune print settings with small test pieces
Identify the filament product, diameter, printer, nozzle, and slicer profile. Calibrate the first layer and check for consistent extrusion before judging optical clarity; a poor first layer or uneven flow can obscure the effect of later adjustments. Prusa emphasizes first-layer calibration in its transparent-object process, particularly when using very fine layers (Prusa’s transparent-object article).
- Make a small, representative test. Use a shape and wall thickness close to the intended part. MatterHackers recommends testing settings before committing to the final print.
- Change one variable at a time. Compare nozzle temperature within the spool’s range, then speed, cooling, layer height, and flow. Keep the other settings constant so the effect of each change is easier to see.
- Judge the same features under consistent lighting. Compare transmitted light, haze, visible layer lines, surface finish, and whether the part still meets its strength and shape requirements.
- Apply the best combination to a larger test. A small coupon can reveal a promising setting, but the full geometry may behave differently, especially if it has thicker sections, corners, or internal features.
Temperature and speed
Higher nozzle temperatures can help adjacent lines fuse and reduce the appearance of interfaces, but too much heat can cause bubbling or burning and make the part less transparent. Ultimaker summarizes the tradeoff: “A higher temp will help your layers fuse more completely resulting in more clarity but once the temp gets too high your material will bubble or even burn as it leaves the nozzle resulting in a less transparent part” (Ultimaker’s clear-plastic guide).

- ④【Filament Spool Diameter】Spool Diameter: 8.00", Spool Width: 2.50", Spool Hub Hole Diameter: 2.20". The size of the SUNLU filament spool is suitable for hanging on a lot of FDM 3D printers.
- ⑤【PLA Recommend Settings】To achieve the best printing results with SUNLU PLA filament, we recommend printing at a nozzle temperature of 200-230°C, a bed temperature of 50-65°C, and a printing speed of 50-100mm/s.
Test temperature in modest increments within the filament maker’s range, and assess speed separately. Lower speeds may help visually blend layer lines for some products, but there is no single target speed supported across all clear PLA formulations and printers.
Cooling, layer height, and extrusion
Cooling is a surface-quality tradeoff, not a universal transparency switch. For example, Polymaker recommends full cooling for surface quality on its Panchroma Translucent PLA product page. Keep the maker’s advice as your baseline, then compare test pieces if clarity and surface finish pull in different directions.

Layer height depends on the geometry. Ultimaker says lower layer heights are usually best, while a larger layer height can help a single-line vase-mode wall. Test the choice on the actual shape rather than assuming the finest layers always produce the clearest part. Check extrusion consistency as well: under- or over-extrusion can change line contact and leave visible defects.

Internal structure affects how light passes through a print. Polymaker’s guidance is direct: “Use thin walls and controlled infill when translucency is the priority, because wall thickness and internal structure remain visible.”

For thin covers and lampshades
If the design can be made as one continuous wall, spiralized or vase mode can avoid internal infill and extra wall interfaces. This approach suits some thin, open shapes, but it is not a fit for every part: the geometry must support a continuous wall, and the result may not meet strength or enclosure requirements.
For solid or load-bearing parts
Choose wall count and infill for the mechanical job first. Thinner walls and controlled infill may improve light transmission, but they can compromise strength or shape. If the part needs substantial internal structure, accept that it may look cloudier than a thin-walled design.
Can sanding or polishing make a clear PLA print glass-clear?
Not reliably for every print. Prusa’s 2019 article documents sanding and polishing in a specific printed-lens experiment, but that process is not a guarantee for different designs, filament formulations, or surface defects. Surface finishing may help a suitable part, but it cannot be assumed to remove haze caused by internal geometry or interfaces throughout the print.
What to expect from a successful tuning pass
A well-tuned clear PLA print may transmit more light and show less obvious haze than an untuned one. FDM layer structure, part geometry, and surface texture can still prevent a glass-like result. For each test, record the product, settings, and observed finish so you can reproduce the useful combination for that spool and design.
