Clean live-stream graphics make the content easier to follow: keep the main gameplay, presentation, or camera area open, use only the labels and frames viewers need, and check the finished layout at the size you will actually stream. In OBS Studio, add graphics as sources, arrange their stacking order, and position them in the preview.
Plan what the graphics need to do
Start with the job each graphic serves, not with decoration. A webcam frame, a short name or social handle, and an intermission message are common examples. Leave the important part of the stream unobstructed. There is no universal rule for text size, contrast, or how much of the screen an overlay may cover, so judge those choices against your own content and check them at the delivered size.

- Use a frame when it helps distinguish or contain a webcam feed.
- Keep labels brief and place them where they do not compete with gameplay, slides, or the camera.
- For an intermission, make the status clear without layering unnecessary elements over the message.
Design for your OBS canvas and output
In OBS Studio, Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace where sources are arranged. Output (Scaled) Resolution is the size used for the stream or recording. Set both with your intended layout in mind: if OBS scales the output, fine lines and small text may look different at delivery size than they do on the canvas.

Match the artwork to your actual composition, then review it in OBS at the output size. For webcam overlays, Elgato lists 16:9, 4:3, 9:16, and 1:1 as possible proportions; choose according to the feed and layout rather than treating any one ratio as mandatory.

Choose an export format that preserves the transparency you need
| Graphic type | Format guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Static overlay with transparent areas | PNG | Confirm the transparent regions reveal the source beneath them in OBS. |
| Animated overlay that must show video underneath | WEBM, recommended by Elgato for animated transparency | Check that the exported file retains transparency in your workflow. |
| Overlay exported as MP4 from Canva | Canva’s overlay page offers PNG or MP4 export | Do not assume MP4 includes an alpha channel; verify the selected export’s transparency behavior. |
Canva’s online Twitch overlay maker can be used to design overlay artwork. The choice of design tool does not remove the need to confirm the file’s dimensions and transparency after export.
Add and position graphics in OBS Studio
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene that should contain the overlay or intermission layout.
- Add the required sources. Use an image source for exported graphics; OBS also supports text, browser pages, and captured video sources.
- Arrange the source order. The source list determines stacking: a source higher in the list appears in front of sources beneath it. Put backgrounds behind the elements meant to sit on top.
- Position and size each element. Move and resize sources in the preview. Use source transforms when you need more precise placement or cropping.
- Check visibility and overlap. Make sure transparent parts reveal the intended source and that no graphic covers essential stream content.
Build a simple “Be Right Back” scene
OBS’s official intermission tutorial uses a background image, a separate image with transparent text, and a game capture source. Add those layers to a scene, then adjust their order so the intended background, message, and capture are visible in the right places. The same approach works for other intermission cards: keep the background and message as separate sources when that makes positioning easier.

Review the scene before using it live
Inspect the whole composition in the OBS preview. Check that transparent areas show the intended content, layers are in the right order, and the text and fine details remain readable at the output resolution. A test recording can help you inspect the delivered result. OBS Studio’s Studio Mode lets you view the live scene separately from the scene you are editing, which is useful when preparing a change without immediately putting it on air.

Choose the right kind of source and control
| Choice | Best fit | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Image source | A fixed graphic stored as an image | Useful for a local frame, label, or background. |
| Browser source | A web-rendered overlay or widget | OBS supports browser sources, often used for alerts and chat boxes. |
| Design software | Creating and exporting artwork | Canva provides an overlay design page; verify the export format and transparency you need. |
| Hardware control such as Stream Deck | Operating prepared scenes while streaming | Elgato documents actions to select OBS scenes and toggle source visibility. A Stream Deck controls scenes and sources; it is not a graphics editor. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos rather than to switch live camera or gameplay scenes, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed.
