For recurring preferences—such as wanting concise answers, clear explanations, or a specific format—Custom Instructions are the most direct ChatGPT setting to try. They let you provide guidance for future conversations, so you do not have to repeat the same request each time. They can make responses feel more useful and consistent, but they do not guarantee that every answer will follow your preferences.
If you meant a different kind of change, choose the control that matches your goal: Custom Instructions for explicit guidance, Memory for relevant details that may carry across chats, and response characteristics for style choices such as warmth or formatting.

What setting should you change first?
Start with Custom Instructions if you want ChatGPT to follow stable directions about how it should respond or what it should consider. OpenAI describes them as preferences ChatGPT keeps in mind for future conversations, and OpenAI Academy calls them a default working style. For example, you could ask for plain-language explanations, a brief answer followed by practical steps, or definitions of unfamiliar technical terms.

OpenAI Academy puts the principle this way: “The more context and direction you provide, the more useful (and consistent) it becomes.” See OpenAI’s overview of Custom Instructions and OpenAI Academy’s personalization guidance.

Choose the control that matches what you want to change
| Control | What it changes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Custom Instructions | Explicit guidance and preferences for responses in future conversations. | Recurring requests about answer length, structure, level of detail, or what to take into account. |
| Memory | Relevant information or preferences that may carry across conversations. | Context that is useful for ChatGPT to remember, rather than a direction about how every answer should be written. |
| Response characteristics | Style attributes such as warmth, enthusiasm, formatting, or emoji use. | Adjusting the feel or presentation of responses. |
These controls can work alongside one another. OpenAI says response characteristics work with personality, Custom Instructions, and saved memories. The precise options and their availability can vary by plan, region, platform, workspace, and rollout, so use the Personalization settings shown in your own account rather than relying on one universal menu path. See OpenAI’s documentation on response characteristics.
How to write useful Custom Instructions
Describe preferences that are likely to apply across many chats. Keep them clear and practical, and avoid putting one-time requests in a setting intended for ongoing guidance.
Rank #2
- Set the level: “Assume I’m new to the topic and define specialized terms.”
- Set the format: “Use headings and numbered steps for procedures.”
- Set the length: “Start with the answer, then add only the explanation needed to act on it.”
- Set useful context: Explain relevant background or constraints that tend to matter across your questions.
Then try the setting on a few real tasks. If the responses are too long, vague, or technical, revise the instruction to name the change you want. For work-specific needs, it may be clearer to give the direction in that conversation instead of making it a general preference.

Review Memory and privacy controls
Memory is related to personalization, but it is not a complete record of everything you have said. OpenAI states: “Memory does not retain every detail from every conversation.” You can review available memory settings and sources, manage or delete saved memories, and use Temporary Chat where available when you do not want personalization from memory. What controls are available depends on your account and environment. See OpenAI’s current Memory help page and its announcement about Memory and its controls.

Personalization settings are not the only privacy consideration. OpenAI also explains its approach to privacy and data controls in How ChatGPT learns about the world while protecting privacy. Check the controls available in your account and choose them based on the information you want ChatGPT to use or retain.

Instructions may be ignored or refused when they conflict with OpenAI’s usage policies, and no personalization setting guarantees that every response will match your preferences. Treat persistent guidance as a way to reduce repeated explanations and improve consistency, not as a substitute for checking important answers. If a particular response misses the mark, state what needs to change in that chat; then revise your standing instructions only if the same preference applies broadly.
