What makes a school lunch balanced?
USDA’s Real Food Guide to School Lunch offers current food-category ideas and aligns with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025–2030. Use it as a flexible guide, not a checklist every child must complete at every meal.

Mix and match foods your child is likely to eat:
- Fruit or vegetables: whole fruit, cut vegetables, or another familiar option.
- Grain: whole-grain bread or crackers, rice, or pasta.
- Protein food: beans, egg, poultry, fish, tofu, or another accepted choice.
- Dairy or a suitable alternative: yogurt or cheese, where appropriate.
These are examples, not a formula guaranteed to meet an individual child’s nutrition needs. Consider allergies, medical dietary needs, cultural and religious food practices, and school restrictions when choosing items.

The federal National School Lunch Program sets meal-pattern requirements for participating schools. Its listed daily-average calorie ranges are 550–650 kcal for grades K–5, 600–700 kcal for grades 6–8, and 750–850 kcal for grades 9–12. These are program standards, not calorie targets for a home-packed lunch or a prescription for an individual child. The rules also cover fruit, vegetables, grains, meat or meat alternates, and milk; some sodium limits and added-sugar requirements have specific implementation timelines. See the USDA meal-pattern chart for the current requirements.

How can you make lunch more likely to be eaten?
Start with familiar foods and keep offering new ones
The CDC says, “Children may need to try some foods many times before they like them.” Offer a small amount of a less familiar food again on another occasion, without pressure, and pair it with foods your child already accepts. One refusal does not establish that a child will never eat that food.
Let your child help choose
Offer a choice between nutritious options—for example, which fruit to pack or whether to have crackers or bread. You can also tailor texture, temperature, shape, and packaging to preferences. Treat those adjustments as practical ways to make lunch more appealing, not as guaranteed solutions.

USDA identifies student choice, taste tests, salad bars, farm-to-school activities, share tables, student advisory committees, and nutrition education as practices schools can consider to support consumption of nutritious meals and reduce food waste. Involving your child in choosing lunch items applies the general idea at home; it cannot guarantee the child will eat more. USDA’s school nutrition standards update states: “Schools across the country are successfully serving meals that are nutritious and appetizing.”

How do you keep a packed lunch at a safe temperature?
For perishable cold foods
For foods such as meat, eggs, cheese, or yogurt, USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service recommends a soft-sided insulated lunch bag and at least two cold sources. Its examples are two frozen gel packs at least 5 by 3 inches each, or one gel pack together with a frozen juice box or water bottle. Put cold sources above and below the perishable items. If the school has a refrigerator, store the lunch there when your child arrives. Follow the full USDA FSIS lunch-packing guidance.

For hot foods
For soup, chili, or stew, use a clean insulated food container. FSIS advises preheating it with boiling water for a few minutes, emptying it, adding piping-hot food, and keeping the container closed until lunch. The food should stay at 140°F or above. An insulated container alone does not ensure that food has been handled safely; follow the agency’s complete handling directions.

- What the child is likely to eat: consider familiar choices and the foods available through the school.
- Dietary and school constraints: account for allergies, medical needs, cultural or religious practices, and school rules.
- Time and cost: weigh the effort and expense of packing against the available school meal.
- Safe storage: consider whether the meal can be kept at the required temperature and whether the school offers refrigeration or reheating.
For a packed meal, the cold-versus-hot choice likewise depends on your child’s preferences, school storage or reheating options, and the equipment needed to maintain a safe temperature.
