First, identify your phone and update it
Check the exact foldable model and software version before following a menu path. Controls differ between manufacturers and may also vary among Galaxy models or One UI versions. If a setting named below is missing, check the support page for your particular phone rather than assuming it is available on every foldable.

Try Samsung Labs for an awkward app layout
On a Galaxy foldable that offers these controls, open Settings > Advanced features > Labs. Labs features are experimental, may not appear on every model, and may not behave correctly with every app. Change one setting at a time; if it makes the app harder to use, turn it off again.

- Multi window for all apps: Lets apps open in split-screen or pop-up view even if they were not designed for those layouts.
- App screen zoom: Changes the zoom level for an individual app, which can make its content easier to read or alter how much fits on screen.
- Landscape view for portrait apps: On supported Galaxy Z Fold models, lets some portrait-oriented apps appear in landscape on the main screen. It may not suit every app or fix its layout.
- Full screen in split screen view and related swipe gestures: Provide additional ways to use split-screen or pop-up windows where supported.
These are workarounds, not a guarantee of a good layout. Samsung describes Labs as experimental and notes that both availability and app behavior vary (Samsung Support: Use the Labs features on your Galaxy foldable phone).

Choose what happens when you fold or unfold
On supported Galaxy Z Fold phones, Samsung documents a per-app screen setting at Settings > Display > Full screen apps. Select an app and choose Full screen if that option is offered. This may use more of the display, but it cannot supply a layout the app does not have.
Samsung also provides a Continue apps on cover screen control on supported devices, so you can choose whether an app continues on the cover screen after you fold the phone. The exact menu can vary by model and One UI version. App Continuity works with select apps, and an app may not preserve its place through a screen change. Try it first with something low-risk, then check that the text you entered, scroll position, and current content are still there before relying on it for important work.

Samsung’s guidance on using a Galaxy foldable open or closed describes screen transitions and continuity options, while warning that behavior depends on the app and device (Samsung Support: Use your Galaxy foldable phone when it’s opened or closed).
Use the inner display for multitasking—or give one app the whole screen
A larger inner screen can make two apps more useful side by side, but a single app may be easier to read and control when it has the whole display. On supported Galaxy foldables, Multi window offers split-screen and pop-up views; app pairs can reopen a chosen combination. Samsung also documents Multi view at Settings > Display > Screen layout and zoom on supported Z Fold models. It gives compatible apps—such as Settings and Samsung Messages—a dual-column layout.

Android’s foldable guidance describes split-screen, drag and drop between apps, and desktop windowing on some devices. Those capabilities, and how many apps can remain open together, depend on the phone and software; do not assume every foldable supports the same window arrangements (Android Developers: Learn about foldables).
- Choose split-screen or pop-up view when you need to refer to one app while working in another.
- Choose a full-screen app when the interface is cramped or the task needs the most space.
- Try drag and drop only where both apps and the device support it.
Use Flex mode when the phone is partly folded
On supported Galaxy devices, open Settings > Advanced features > Flex mode panel, enable the panel, then choose apps under Auto show panel when folded if that control is available. In compatible scenarios, an app’s content can occupy the upper portion while controls appear below—useful for examples such as hands-free camera use, video, or notes. App and device support varies (Samsung Support: Use Flex mode and view apps on Galaxy foldable phones).

Samsung’s current Flex mode support article contains conflicting model information: it lists the Z Fold8 among devices where the panel can be activated, but also says Flex mode is not supported on the Z Fold8 or Galaxy Z TriFold. Check the support page for your exact model before depending on the feature. A stand may help hold a phone in a tabletop posture, but it does not fix app layout or continuity; check that any stand fits your phone and hinge position.
Know when the app itself needs an update
If an app stays letterboxed, loses your place, or remains awkward after you try the relevant display options, the limitation may be in the app rather than a missing phone setting. Android Developers explains that an app can stop and restart as a device transitions between screens; seamless continuity requires the app to preserve and restore its state (Android Developers: Learn about foldables, updated September 29, 2026).
Samsung’s developer guidance recommends that foldable apps adapt across cover and main displays, support landscape and full-screen use without letterboxing, and preserve continuity such as scroll position and text input. It also advises keeping interactive controls clear of the fold or hinge area. These are app-development recommendations, not settings users can force on every app (Samsung Developer: Designing for foldables). If the built-in workarounds do not help, contact the app developer and describe your phone model, software version, and what happens when you fold or unfold the device.
