How to Make Apps Open Maximized in Windows 11—and How to Turn It Off

Windows 11’s documented shortcuts maximize the active window, while future launch size depends on the individual app. Here’s how to check app settings and arrange windows with Snap.

Windows 11’s reviewed Microsoft guidance does not document one system-wide switch for making every app open maximized by default. For an app that keeps launching at the wrong size, check that app’s own settings and documentation; to maximize a window that is already open, use Windows + Up arrow. These are different fixes: the shortcut changes the current window, not future launches.

Choose the fix for your situation

What you want What to use What it changes
Maximize one window now Windows + Up arrow The active window’s current state
Change how one app opens in the future That app’s settings or documentation Only settings the individual app provides
Arrange several open windows Windows Snap The current screen layout, not app startup behavior

Maximize or restore a window that is already open

Focus the window you want to change and press Windows + Up arrow to maximize it. To move back through window states, press Windows + Down arrow; Microsoft describes this shortcut as moving through minimized, windowed, and maximized states. You can also use the window’s maximize or restore button.

These shortcuts affect the focused window only. They do not set a preference for the next time you launch the app. Microsoft also cautions that common shortcuts may not work in every app, so behavior can vary; check the app’s own help if the shortcut has no effect. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard tips and tricks lists the window shortcuts.

Check whether the app can remember its launch size

If one app repeatedly opens at an unwanted size, look in that app’s settings for a startup, window, or display-size option. Settings are often behind a gear icon, but not every app provides a control for remembering its last window size or opening maximized. Microsoft’s general advice is to check the individual app’s settings; it does not guarantee a launch-size setting. See Find app settings in Windows.

  1. Open the affected app and its settings, often through a gear icon.
  2. Look for a setting related to startup behavior, window size, or display.
  3. If no such setting appears, consult the app’s documentation or support information. Windows’ general settings guidance does not establish that every app can be configured this way.

Use Snap to arrange multiple apps

Snap helps arrange open windows into a screen layout; it is not a global maximize-on-launch setting. To choose a layout, press Windows + Z or point to a window’s maximize button and select a layout from the flyout. Then use Snap Assist to fill the other spaces with open windows. Available layouts can vary with display size. Microsoft explains the options in Snap Your Windows.

Can you disable maximized launches?

The reviewed Microsoft guidance does not document a Windows-wide setting to stop all apps from opening maximized—or to force all apps to open maximized. If a particular app launches maximized and you want it windowed, look for a corresponding option in that app’s settings or documentation. Restoring the current window changes its present state, but is not documented as a persistent startup preference.
