To make a custom CurseForge modpack, create a Minecraft Java Edition profile, choose its Minecraft version and modloader, add content from Add More Content, and test it. To share it privately, use Share Profile to export a ZIP or generate a profile code. ZIP files can be kept and resent; profile codes are convenient but expire after seven days.

What a CurseForge profile contains
In CurseForge, a profile is the collection of settings and files used to launch a custom Minecraft Java Edition instance. The profile records the Minecraft version, modloader, installed mods and any additional folders you choose to export. It is not the same thing as sending someone a single mod, a world folder or a data pack. The CurseForge importer expects a modpack or custom-profile package that follows CurseForge’s export structure.

Before creating one, make sure you have the CurseForge app installed and enough disk space for Minecraft, the loader and your selected content. The exact performance requirement depends on the mods and resource packs you choose; CurseForge does not guarantee that arbitrary combinations will work together.
Create the custom profile
Open the Minecraft profile creator
- Open the CurseForge app and select Minecraft.
- Click Create.
- Enter a descriptive profile name, such as Adventure Server 1.20.x or Lightweight Building Pack.
- Select the Minecraft version you intend to use.
- Select a compatible modloader, then create the profile.
CurseForge supports Forge, Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt profiles. It also supports Vanilla profiles, but Vanilla has no modloader and does not support mods. Choose Vanilla only when you need a profile for an unmodified game or for content that does not require a modloader.

The Minecraft version and loader are foundational choices. A mod compiled for one Minecraft release or loader may not load under another, even when the names look similar. Decide these values before installing a large number of mods so you do not have to rebuild the profile later.
Open the new profile
After creation, find the profile under My Modpacks and open it. The profile page is where you install content, change profile options and launch the instance. Keep the profile name and version clear enough that a friend can identify the correct pack after importing it.
Add mods, resource packs and maps
Install content through Add More Content
- Open the profile from My Modpacks.
- Click Add More Content.
- Search for a mod, resource pack or map.
- Check that the result supports the profile’s Minecraft version and modloader.
- Click the install control for the item you want.
Use the same process to add resource packs and maps when they are available for the selected game version. Installing from the profile’s content browser helps CurseForge identify the project and version that should be recorded in the profile.
Do not assume that two items are compatible just because both appear in search results. Compatibility can fail when the Minecraft versions differ, when the loaders differ, or when both values differ. Some mods also require a particular loader release or another dependency.
Fix version and modloader mismatches
CurseForge identifies incompatibility when a mod and profile use different Minecraft versions, different loaders, or both. Forge, Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt are separate loader ecosystems; a Fabric build is not interchangeable with a Forge build merely because the mod has the same name.

Change the loader version when a dependency requires it
- Open the affected profile.
- Open Profile Options.
- Select the Minecraft or modloader version required by the mod.
- Click Done.
- Relaunch the profile and check the result.
Changing the loader can make other installed mods incompatible. If the profile becomes unstable, return to the last known compatible version or remove the item that introduced the requirement. Keep a note of deliberate version changes so everyone receiving the pack uses the same combination.

Click Play from the profile page and allow Minecraft to start. A successful launch confirms only that this installation starts on your computer; it does not prove that every computer, Java installation or graphics configuration will behave identically.
- Open a test world and verify that the principal mods load.
- Check that required blocks, items, menus and key bindings appear.
- Test any resource pack or map that is essential to the experience.
- Close the game normally before exporting so files are not being changed during packaging.
If a mod reports a missing dependency, install the required project in the same profile or use the loader version specified by the mod. If startup fails after a recent addition, remove that addition temporarily and launch again to isolate the conflict.
Choose ZIP sharing or a profile code
CurseForge provides two private-sharing methods in the profile’s Share Profile window. The choice depends on whether you need a durable file or a quick handoff.

Neither method makes incompatible mods compatible. Both identify a custom profile that CurseForge can import; the recipient may still need to resolve a local launcher, Java or hardware issue.

Export a private modpack ZIP
Select the profile folders
- Open the Minecraft tab.
- Select the profile you want to share.
- Open the profile’s top-right context menu.
- Choose Share Profile.
- Select the folders to include.
- Confirm the export and wait for CurseForge to create the ZIP.
For a normal modpack share without worlds, CurseForge’s support instructions say to select config and mods. The config folder carries configuration choices; mods identifies the installed mod files or entries needed for the profile. Include other folders only when they are part of the experience you intend to distribute.
Decide whether to include saves and other files
Including a world or save can give the recipient your existing map, but it also sends progress and potentially large files. A clean modpack generally omits personal saves. Include resource, script, map or configuration folders when they are required for the profile to behave as designed.
Keep the original ZIP unchanged after exporting. If you make later changes, export a new file and label it with a version or date so recipients do not confuse two builds.
Share with a profile code
Generate the code
- Sign in to CurseForge.
- Open the Minecraft profile you want to share.
- Choose Share Profile.
- In the sharing window, choose Generate code.
- Send the resulting code to the recipient.
CurseForge Support states: “Please note that the code is only available for 7 days.” Treat the code as a short-lived invitation, not a permanent identifier. If the recipient tries it after the seven-day period, generate a new code and send that instead. CurseForge’s January 22, 2025 release notes describe profile sharing by code as an app feature.

Import a ZIP
- Open the CurseForge app and select Minecraft.
- Click Import.
- Choose Import Profile .zip.
- Select the exported ZIP file.
- Wait for CurseForge to install it as a new profile.
The imported pack appears under the Minecraft tab as a new profile. The recipient can then open it, review the installed content and click Play.

Import with a code
- Open the CurseForge app’s Minecraft section.
- Click Import.
- Choose Use Profile code.
- Enter the code exactly as received.
- Confirm the import and wait for the new profile to be created.
If the code has expired, the recipient cannot extend it locally. The creator must generate another code from Share Profile.

CurseForge says the feature works only with modpacks or custom profiles that match its export structure. An “Invalid file” message usually means one of the following:
- The selected item is not a ZIP file.
- The ZIP is an ordinary compressed folder rather than a CurseForge-exported profile.
- The file is an individual mod, world, save or data pack.
- The ZIP was altered, nested inside another folder or damaged during transfer.
- The sender exported a format that does not match the CurseForge profile importer.
Recovery steps for the sender
- Return to the original profile in the CurseForge app.
- Use the top-right menu and select Share Profile again.
- Choose the intended folders, normally config and mods for a share without worlds.
- Confirm a fresh export and send that ZIP without opening and repackaging it.
Recovery steps for the recipient
- Save the attachment locally before importing it; do not select a preview page or a cloud-service folder shortcut.
- Confirm that the filename ends in
.zipand that the download completed. - Use Import Profile .zip, not the code option.
- Ask the sender for a new export if the file is an individual mod, world or data pack.
Individual mods, worlds and data packs are not accepted through this profile-import flow. They must be installed through the appropriate Minecraft or CurseForge workflow instead.
Private sharing versus public CurseForge publishing
A private share is intended for selected people. Public publishing creates a project that other users can discover and download, so it follows a different package structure and additional licensing rules.

Build the public ZIP correctly
For a public submission, the ZIP must place manifest.json at its root. The overrides folder sits alongside it. Put the files that need to be copied into the installed instance—such as configurations, scripts, maps, saves and resources—inside overrides.
Do not put CurseForge-hosted mod JAR files directly in the public package when the submission guide requires them to be represented in the manifest. The manifest identifies the hosted projects and versions for CurseForge to provide. Bundling those JARs can produce an invalid or noncompliant submission.
Third-party licensing and credit obligations still apply. Personal permission from an author is not accepted as a substitute for the requirements applied to unlisted third-party mods. Check each project’s license and attribution conditions before submitting.

Maintain a shared pack after the first release
Use clear versions
A profile code shares the current profile at the moment the code is generated. If you change the profile afterward, generate a new code or export a new ZIP. A recipient who already imported an older copy will not automatically receive later changes.
Use a simple label such as Pack name 1.2 — Minecraft version — loader for exported files. Record notable changes, including added or removed mods, configuration changes and loader updates. This avoids asking every recipient to guess which ZIP is newest.
Change one compatibility variable at a time
When updating a working pack, change the Minecraft version, loader or major mod set separately where possible. Launch after each meaningful change. If the profile fails, the last change is a more useful diagnostic clue than a simultaneous upgrade of every component.
